  • Dr. Cheryl Gooden - National Medical Fellowships, Inc.
    up In February 2005 then Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine Dr Gooden provided anesthesia to children at a hospital in Pune India Organized by the Plasticos Foundation the mission performed plastic surgeries including excising facial and neck scars secondary to kerosene burns a major public health problem in India and other developing countries Knowing that she would be treating children with challenging airways to intubate for surgery Dr Gooden teamed up with Dr John Pacey a Canadian vascular surgeon to trial the pediatric version of an airway device he had invented Since that time Dr Gooden has helped in the evolution of the device That first trip to India was an amazing experience recalls Dr Gooden I saw things that I read about in text books but never saw as a physician in person It was truly eye opening and it made me want to see and learn and help more Dr Gooden has since served in Tanzania and Vietnam with the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital and she brought along US medical residents to Nicaragua and Peru missions In all of her international missions she provides anesthesia care while also teaching and mentoring clinicians and trainees in an effort to build sustainable local capacity Since 2010 Dr Gooden has made multiple trips to Lima Peru with the Komedyplast Organization which performs complex surgeries on children with craniofacial malformations The patients families would otherwise not have the means to provide their children with the medical care they need Many of the surgeries are performed in stages so the team sees some of the same patients year after year Dr Gooden explains The families remember us A year later they run up to us hugging us For me that s what it s all about that big thankful hug from a mom or a dad It s wonderful I love it Dr Gooden on a recent medical mission to Hanoi Vietnam with Orbis on the Flying Eye Hospital The desire to serve is grounded in Dr Gooden s local community She highlights the importance of mentoring high school and college students who are interested in medicine She has trained many residents over the years a number of whom she maintains close relationships with At the end of the day Dr Gooden is the physician who refuses to leave until she knows her patients are okay and comfortable She serves meals at the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House each Thanksgiving Day Dr Gooden attributes her commitment to service to her parents immigrants from the West Indies and to the help she received during her own medical school tenure Dr Gooden was in her second year at the Temple University School of Medicine when her mother was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer When family finances were diverted to her mother s care Dr Gooden received an NMF scholarship along with the support of Temple s faculty and administration to continue her studies Describing Temple
