    the Union League Club in New York City for the Champions of Health Awards event to recognize and celebrate individuals and organizations that partner with NMF in support of equity of access and opportunity in medicine The evening was hosted by NBC meteorologist Rafael Miranda whose greeting set the tone for an evening that celebrated the accomplishments of the NMF community and engaged in meaningful discussion on the problems facing medically underserved communities and what is being done to address them Setting the evening s focus the keynote speaker David Blumenthal MD MPP President and CEO of The Commonwealth Fund highlighted NMF s history and legacy and the need for continued support from corporations and large foundations to ensure its growth and sustainability After the welcome by George E Thibault MD President of Josiah Macy Jr Foundation and Honorary Chair of the Host Committee the evening recognized the 2013 Champions of Health For her groundbreaking career spanning forty years and including positions as the third female chair of the Pathology Department at Howard University the second female president of the National Medical Association the first full time director of the NIH Office of Research on Women s Health and long time NMF Board member Vivian W Pinn MD was awarded the NMF Founder s Award For her contributions to Medicare reform the health workforce healthcare for the elderly and health equity issues Lauren LeRoy PhD former President and CEO of Grantmakers in Health was awarded the NMF Philanthropy Leadership Award David G Nichols MD MBA President and CEO of the American Board of Pediatrics received the NMF Distinguished Alumni Award for his dedication to improving the health of children worldwide Finally Jack Rudin was awarded the NMF Humanitarian Award in absentia for his wide reaching and generous philanthropic contributions The award was accepted by Mark Bodden Vice President Program Director of the Rudin Foundation Each honoree was introduced by NMF colleagues and friends including Darrell G Kirch MD President and CEO of AAMC Gary C Butts MD Associate Dean for Diversity Programs Policy and Community Affairs at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Event Co Chair Daniel T McGowan NMF Board Chair and Chair of HYGEA Health Holdings Inc and J Emilio Carrillo MD MPH Vice President of Community Heath at New York Presbyterian Hospital The evening celebrated past and current triumphs of NMF and then gave a glimpse of the future as NMF scholars and alumni shared their personal journeys to attain careers in medicine The first scholarships of The New York Community Trust NMF Medical Research program were awarded by Fritz Francois MD MSc FACG Associate Dean for Diversity and Academic Affairs New York University School of Medicine and Event Co Chair Tanya Hall Community Relations Director Northeast Mid Atlantic Region at Aetna awarded this year s cohort of New York area Aetna Foundation NMF Healthcare Leadership Program scholarship recipients The student biographies promise eminent future careers that are being constructed through a variety of

    Cornelius l hopper MD Dr Cornelius L Hopper Emeritus Vice President for Health Affairs for the University of California System will be honored with the NMF Distinguished Alumni Award at the Los Angeles Champions of Health Awards on June 26 2013 Dr Hopper received his AB degree from Ohio University and his MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Following service as a Battalion Surgeon with the 4th Marines he trained in Internal Medicine at Marquette University and in Neurology at the University of Wisconsin Madison He joined Wisconsin s Neurology faculty serving as the founding director of a network of Multiple Sclerosis Clinics In 1971 Dr Hopper concerned about racial and ethnic disparities in the nation s health care system moved to Tuskegee Institute in Alabama where he was director of the John A Andrew Memorial Hospital and the Institute s Vice President of Health Affairs At Tuskegee he introduced the National Health Services Corps into the southeastern U S organized one of the first rural based Area Health Education Centers and pioneered a unique multi county primary care system which utilized telemedicine concepts that were later adapted for use in West Africa under the auspices of USAID He served the University of California System UC from 1979 to 2000 as the senior administrative officer of America s largest university health sciences system Dr Hopper spearheaded reorganization of the Regents governance of its academic medical centers He also led development of Changing Directions in Medical Education a plan modifying five medical schools mission and curriculum to expand training in primary care Beginning in the 1980s he organized and ran California State funded Research Grant Programs in AIDS Geriatrics Tobacco related Diseases and Breast Cancer resulting in awards of over 400 million to California researchers Dr Hopper has
