    Leadership Program GE NMF Global Health Fellows Program United Health Foundation NMF Diverse Medical Scholars Program Career Center Support NMF Donate Now Planned Giving Front Page NMF IN BRIEF JUNE 2015 2015 GE NMF Global Health Fellows from left to right Jay Sheree Allen Ebony Juakali Fernando Guarderas and Vy Nguyen GE NMF Global Health Fellows in Ghana Use Crowd Funding to Support Local Hospitals The hospitals in Africa where our GE NMF Global Health Fellows work are often operating with a small but dedicated staff who are forced to ration the few resources they have This year Fellows in Apam and Axim Ghana decided to do something about it Using popular crowd funding website GoFundMe Fellows at St Luke s Hospital in Apam raised more than 2 800 while Fellows in Axim raised 2 150 to support the local government hospitals There are minor issues like the patient beds needing mosquito nets etc that would make a huge difference to the facility said Jay Sheree Allen who served in Apam Donations were used to provide such things as basic treatments for malaria HIV and tuberculosis screenings supplies like mosquito nets and bed sheets and to make improvements to the

    During his tenure the Medical College saw an overhaul of its curriculum record setting fundraising campaigns a renaming in honor of foremost benefactors Joan and Sanford Weill the establishment of a branch campus in Qatar and of a medical school in Tanzania affiliation with the Methodist Hospital in Houston and the development of state of the art facilities including the Weill Greenberg Center and the Belfer Research Building which will double the institution s lab space when it s completed at the end of 2013 Previously at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas Dr Gotto was the Bob and Vivian Smith Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine Scientific Director of the DeBakey Heart Center and the JS Abercrombie Chair for Atherosclerosis and Lipoprotein Research He also served as Chief of the Internal Medicine Service at The Methodist Hospital in Houston Dr Gotto s postgraduate work included doctoral studies at Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar and residency training at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston Massachusetts In the field of atherosclerosis his basic science research interests include clinical disorders of lipid transport and the structure metabolism and function of lipoproteins and apolipoproteins He and his associates were the first to achieve complete synthesis of a plasma apolipoprotein apo C I they also determined the complete cDNA and amino acid sequence of apo B 100 one of the largest proteins ever sequenced and a key protein in atherosclerosis In addition Dr Gotto has played a leading role in several landmark clinical trials demonstrating that cholesterol lowering drug treatment can reduce the risk for heart disease As a lifelong supporter of educational efforts aimed at cardiovascular risk reduction Dr Gotto has been National President of the American Heart Association and President of the International Atherosclerosis Society He

    NMF Primary Care Leadership Program GE NMF Global Health Fellows Program United Health Foundation NMF Diverse Medical Scholars Program Career Center Support NMF Donate Now Planned Giving Front Page NMF IN BRIEF JUNE 2015 The Primary Care Funding Cliff Crisis Deflected or Deferred In April 2015 President Obama signed the Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act which provided for the extension of federal funding to community health centers CHCs through fiscal year 2017 A bipartisan effort thus successfully averted the fearsome primary care funding cliff the anticipated October 2015 expiration of the Health Centers Fund established under the Affordable Care Act ACA But is the crisis over According to one view while we must acknowledge the diligence of legislators in sustaining the Health Centers Fund for two more years the funding cliff has not been avoided but only delayed CHC leaders and supporters must now redouble their advocacy efforts to avoid the funding cliff of 2017 Proponents of this view maintain that advocates ought in fact topress for a permanent funding increase for CHCs to better protect them against the shifting winds of political change However others observe that CHCs have always survived the winds of political change Through June and July 2015 the GE NMF Primary Care Leadership Program PCLP will hold a series of events around the country to bring together Scholars site partners and community participants to discuss these and other perspectives on the primary care funding cliff What should be the focus and substance of CHC advocacy efforts in the next two years For more information or to attend an event please contact Jessica Allen Program Coordinator GE NMF PCLP at jallen nmfonline org or 504 309 7380 x201 Date City Wednesday June 24 Houston Monday July 6 New York Tuesday July 7 Phoenix Wednesday July 8
