  • Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. - New York Champions of Health Awards - National Medical Fellowships, Inc.
    Associate Dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and full Professor of Cardiac Surgery In 1970 Dr Watkins came to Johns Hopkins as a surgical intern During his professional career there he was the first African American to serve as chief resident in cardiac surgery and later in 1991 as professor of cardiac surgery and associate dean of the medical school In 1980 Dr Watkins performed the world s first human implantation of the automatic implantable defibrillator a procedure that has been repeated more than a million times worldwide Growing up in Alabama exposed him to widespread prejudice and to the early civil rights movement He initially attended First Baptist Church of Montgomery and became close friends with his pastor Dr Ralph David Abernathy later he attended Dexter Avenue Baptist Church where he was introduced to Martin Luther King Jr After graduating from high school Dr Watkins attended Tennessee State University where he majored in biology led many student movements on campus and graduated with highest honors In 1966 he integrated the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine as the first black medical student and graduate In 1988 he was honored with the Vanderbilt Medal of Honor for outstanding alumni Further recognition came in 2002 when Vanderbilt established a Professorship and Associate Deanship in his name for his work in diversity in medical education In 2008 he received the university s Most Distinguished Alumnus award Early exposure to the civil rights movements and its leaders sealed his commitment to racial equality In 1979 Dr Watkins joined the Johns Hopkins medical school admissions committee after four years minority representation increased by 400 In 1983 the largest number of black physicians graduated from the institution For these efforts recognized nationally he was appointed in 1983 to the National Board of the

    heart an appreciation for diligent work the determination to use his her talents to the fullest and the courage to ask for help when it is needed Nobody has embodied those qualities more so than Norman C Francis whose administrative career at Xavier has spanned a half century A 1952 graduate Francis returned to his alma mater in 1957 following Loyola Law School and two years in the US Army to begin his administrative career as dean of men Since his appointment as the University s first lay president in 1968 Xavier has more than tripled its enrollment broadened its curriculum expanded its campus and received national attention for its award winning academic initiatives The tradition of academic excellence is consistent with the dreams of its founder Saint Katharine Drexel and her Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament religious order Admired for his sharp mind revered for his modesty and praised for his dedication Dr Francis enjoys a prestigious national reputation In December 2006 he received the nation s highest civilian award The Presidential Medal of Freedom from President George W Bush Francis has served in an advisory role to five US presidents including the historic National Commission on Excellence in Education whose findings published in the groundbreaking work A Nation at Risk created a sense of urgency for bringing about educational reform in the nation s school system He has served as chairman or board member for numerous councils and foundations including Chair of the President s Council for the United Negro College Fund American Association of Higher Education The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching The College Board Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Educational Testing Service and the Southern Education Foundation In 2007 the Secretary of the U S Department of Education appointed Dr Francis to Chair

    O Richards MD Atlanta Champions of Health Awards Pioneer honoree NMF Alumni and Friends receptions are coming to Atlanta LA DC Miami San Antonio Minneapolis Chicago and maybe to a city or village near you Our Alums are in all 50 states and when they get together they enjoy networking and much more NMF Alumni and Friends receptions are coming to Atlanta LA DC Miami San Antonio Minneapolis Chicago and maybe to a city or village near you Our Alums are in all 50 states and when they get together they enjoy networking and much more In December alums gathered at the home of Cato and Cynthia Laurencin in Avon Connecticut in the Farmington Valley near Hartford Cato Laurencin MD PhD is a University Professor of University of Connecticut SOM a member of the Institute of Medicine and one of NMF s most enthusiastic Alums As host he was the spark that generated ideas that were quickly translated into new commitments Two NMF alums volunteered on the spot to become mentors to NMF students Garth Graham MD MPH President of the Aetna Foundation volunteered to be on the NMF Alumni Council that is now in formation As a result of the interactions at this event NMF has conceived a new Aetna NMF Primary Care Fellows Program that will launch in summer in Washington DC And that s just for starters The evening was so successful that we are already planning a follow up in June And then there is Atlanta A cocktail reception in Atlanta was hosted by alumna Helene Gayle MD MPH and Stephen N Keith MD MSPH a member of the NMF Board of Directors in July 2013 The event drew deans leaders and executives from Morehouse the CDC Kaiser Permanente the US Public Health Services and also

    high school he joined the Navy where he was a hospital corpsman with a specialty in field medicine Running an aid station really solidified his desire to become a physician so he went back to school He earned his bachelors at the University of Alabama and his MD at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham He completed his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson Mississippi where he has been on the faculty ever since Dr Brunson now serves as Senior Advisor to the Vice Chancellor for External Affairs Professor of Anesthesiology and a member of the Admissions Committee He brings empathy and a unique perspective to the admissions process At the University of Mississippi Medical Center he tells us admissions takes a holistic approach looking beyond the MCAT at what life experiences or other qualities candidates can bring to the table The Committee looks with interest at students from rural areas or first generation college graduates for example Dr Brunson stresses how important it is to make sure that there is a pathway for students who come from limited resources and grew up with little access to health care He believes that these students are more likely to return to their communities to practice medicine and more likely to stay In my mind they are the ones who are going to make a real difference in dealing with health disparities he says Like many first generation minority medical students Dr Brunson was not from an affluent background and relied entirely on student loans to finance his medical school education He recalls that even with loans financing medical school is was very challenging and his NMF scholarship made a big difference So he understands the financial pressures experienced by today s students It makes

    Scholars Program Career Center Support NMF Donate Now Planned Giving SPRING NEWSLETTER APRIL 2014 In this issue Front Page NMF Alumni Say Yes In My Backyard NMF Alumnus Elected President of the Mississippi Medical Association NMF Launches New Service Learning Program in California Students Head to Africa for Primary Healthcare Program Visit our site Homepage Events Support NMF Application Deadlines April 24 Monash Scott Medical Student Scholarship Program Learn more Rolling Emergence Scholarship Fund Learn more Students head to Africa for primary healthcare program Many students dream of practicing medicine in other parts of the world This spring some NMF scholars will make that dream a reality 14 students will have a chance to gain clinical experience in primary healthcare in Ghana or Kenya through the GE NMF Global Health Fellows Program Since 2007 81 students have participated in the program This year there are 14 students eight in Ghana and six in Kenya During their six week stay the students will learn to care for acutely ill patients and will be actively involved in healthcare delivery and evaluation Each student will complete an independent project as well as an assessment of the community and two hospital sites Applicants are chosen by a committee of Alumni and contacts in each of the countries NMF selects which country the students go to and each student chooses his or her area of focus whether it be pediatrics maternity or trauma The projects vary every year and students can build off prior projects by students Each student s experience is really unique depending on what they re interested in says Program manager Ja net Carter Though every hospital site is different a typical day usually starts with clinical rounds and a review of admitted patients Students have a chance to discuss the various
