    Roads Bridges and tagged bridge closures nockamixon road closures on August 11 2014 by admin Be Bear Aware PUBLIC NOTICE Black Bear Sightings Black bears have been increasingly active around our township and sightings are on the rise Would you know what to do if you came across one at close range Or better yet how to keep that from happening The Pennsylvania Game Commission has shared with us tips for both awareness and survival and we share them with you here How To Avoid Dangerous Interaction and What To Do If You Can t There are more than 17 000 in the Keystone State and as their habitat gets more fragmented they must roam from one feeding ground to another Chances are on the increase that they will sooner or later come in contact with humans With increased bear sightings here in Nockamixon Township it s important that our residents know what to do and what not to do in case you come upon a bear The following tips are shared from the Pennsylvania Game Commission The best way to keep from encountering a bear is to avoid attracting bears in the first place Refrain from feeding wildlife including squirrels and birds If you decide to have a bird feeder then avoid foods that are particularly attractive for bears such as sunflower seeds hummingbird nectar mixes or suet Feeders should be brought in at night or suspended from high cross wires at least 10 feet above the ground Keep barbecue grills clean Feed pets indoors Refrain from adding fruit or vegetable wastes to compost piles and avoid throwing table scraps out back Wait to put trash out until pickup day If you do see a bear If it hasn t spotted you calmly leave the area Talk or make
