bad news is that it didn t help at all I was told and it makes sense to me that modern operating systems are very very good at figuring out what to buffer from disc So even if you tell NONMEM only to keep a small part of the data the OS keeps pretty much all of it in memory when you have 1 Gb of memory and only 800k of data not a challenge If you look at the task manager you ll almost always see NONMEM at 100 meaning it really isn t waiting for any disc I O But your point is good the days of when memory was an issue for NONMEM are long past but my experience is that is doesn t make much difference at least in Windows and I d guess Linux is at least as good a memory management It may be time to try it again did you benchmark your version with the large LIM1 Mark Sale MD Next Level Solutions LLC www NextLevelSolns com From Bob Leary bleary pharsight com Subject RE NMusers MAXIDS 10000 Date Fri 1 Dec 2006 09 19 42 0500 Mark and Nick If any of these buffer sizes are used internally as the leading dimension of a Fortran array with 2 or more indices then to avoid thrashing the various caches it is usually a good idea to make the size an odd number the point is to avoid numbers which have a factor of 2 or even worse 4 or even worse 8 etc An unfortunate memory access pattern in such an array can severely inpact performance Bob Leary From Ludden Thomas MYD luddent iconus com Subject RE NMusers MAXIDS 10000 Date Fri 1 Dec 2006 11 58 13 0500 Mark and Nick I checked the reference copy of NONMEM V 1 1 and the Master CD used for the distribution of NONMEM V 1 1 dated 18 March 2005 and both have LIM6 200 in NSIZES Perhaps the LIM6 value in NONMEM V 1 1 was changed from 200 to 600 for your respective installations As already noted the default value for this parameter was increased to 400 in both the NONMEM VI 1 0 Beta and the released version of NONMEM VI 1 0 Regarding MAXIDS To sort the individual contributions of the objective function value prior to summation and to store these individual values in a common for later output by the user it is necessary to provide a maximum size for the associated arrays This is a limitation of FORTRAN 77 While it would have been possible to circumvent the limit when sorting was not selected it would still have been necessary for storing these values for eventual output by the user I would agree that a larger value should have been chosen We have already had to increase the value from 1000 to 2000 for a current analysis When NONMEM VI is first installed users may want to adjust

is designed to work with NONMEM VI A few minor changes have been made to cope with modifications to the NONMEM VI output listing The default installation directory for WFN6 is c nmvi wfn6 You should install WFN6 in a different directory from earlier versions in order to allow you to continue to use previous versions of WFN with NONMEM V The code used by wfn bat to convert long paths to 8 character format has been disabled This code caused problems on some versions of Windows It was there primarily to avoid some warnings when keeping NONMEM up to date with mknm bat mknm bat is no longer included in this version because NMQual http metruminstitute org downloads nmqual does a better job at creating a qualified NONMEM installation Please let me know if when you discover bugs This is especially likely with the release of NONMEM VI I have tested WFN with a beta version of NONMEM VI but in only very limited fashion with the first public release which reached me yesterday To date there have been no other testers of WFN6 with NONMEM VI Thanks for your patience if you get bitten by something I overlooked
