  • Creative school – Sweden goes for more culture at school — Valhalla
    year the Swedish Government spends 55 million SEK i e approximately 175 SEK per pupil on cultural initiatives at school The ambition is to advance the cultural work in the 7th 8th and 9th forms starting from 2008 The initiative applies both to public and independent schools The long term goal is to integrate the cultural and artistic expressions into the school s work by means of an increased co operation with the cultural life By Katarina Dorbell A lot of schools are focusing on culture creative work and aesthetic teaching processes however they seldom base their activities on established goals or requirements for follow up At the same time reports show that the potential of children and young people to create and take part in the cultural life vary greatly Differently from any other part of the society the school has the capacity to reach everyone irrespective of the family s resources or background The subsidy is going to be distributed by the Swedish Arts Council These efforts should be complementary to the existing cultural work and aesthetic activities in schools The initiative is certainly welcome but there is some criticism directed both towards the sum which is considered

  • Reform proposal for Faeroese upper secondary schools — Valhalla
    September the Faeroese Minister of Culture and Education Jógvan á Lakjuni received a proposal for a revision of the upper secondary schools The process started with a Nordic congress in Torshavn in 2005 and since then a special working committee has formulated the proposal concerning a substantial revision of the structure of the upper secondary education in the Faeroe Islands By Hedvig Westerlund Kapnas The idea behind the proposal is to integrate vocational training the humanities and natural sciences into a single system comprising various study programmes The education is arranged in three regional schools centres one for Suðuroy one for Streymoy and one for Eysturoy Norðoyggjar The centres should function as independent economic units with a three year funding and common legislation The number of laws and regulations will be substantially reduced from the present 7 laws and 28 regulations to 2 laws and 18 regulations today s 180 curricula will be reduced to approximately 80 The function of the Ministry will be to lay down the guiding principles and to supervise whereas the administrative functions to a considerable extent will be delegated to the school centres The report states that a new curriculum that covers everything from the
