  • 'The Cultural Schoolbag' – a source of inspiration — Valhalla
start speaking One boy was asked to stand up on a chair and get down a kettle full of all possible kitchen utensils You could see by the excited look on his face that this isn t something he does at home It was a great experience both for the children and me The performances were playful and elegant and the kids excitement brightened up everything This performance is a music and theatre workshop The DAK group consists of inter alia performance artists actors musicians and installation artists It is actually the ambition with Den kulturelle skolesekken that kids via the school should meet professional art and artists and that they should experience freshly created art that they otherwise most probably wouldn t have encountered hadn t it been for Den kulturelle skolesekken The requirement for art and culture projects in Den kulturelle skolesekken is high quality and professionalism Arts and culture isn t something new at school The new thing with Den kulturelle skolesekken is that now it is professional artists that are to present arts at school Another important principle is that kids should be introduced to different types of artistic and cultural expressions from all types of cultural institutions All the pupils should be able to enjoy Den kulturelle skolesekken no matter where they live or what school they attend Why should children and young people experience professional art why cannot teachers communicate art and culture as before I put this question to Astrid Holen who is the head of the secretariat for Den kulturelle skolesekken of the Norwegian Archive Library and Museum Authority Only the best things are good enough for children says Astrid The school curriculum says that the pupils by means of images and forms sounds and words should be stimulated to evolve their fantasy and experience art A teacher is an expert at being a teacher and an artist is an expert in his field It is important that each of them should meet pupils but it would be nice if both of them could understand their roles says Astrid Holen The initiative Den kulturelle skolesekken hasn t been uncomplicated It is a meeting point for representatives of two different cultures and traditions educators and artists They have to co operate and understand each other s ways of thinking by means of Den kulturelle skolesekken Do the teachers understand the significance of good art and culture and are the artists aware of the everyday life in the school they are going to visit The need for competence building in both of the groups is one of the things made visible by Den kulturelle skolesekken What is the need for competence building and what about the future challenges in this context This is the question I put to Astrid Holen The ideal situation is when a school is well prepared for visits by the artists where the pupils have expectations and where the teachers can place the visit in a proper context And not
