  • Nominations for the West Nordic Council's Children and Young People's Literature Prize — Valhalla
    2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 Info Nominations for the West Nordic Council s Children and Young People s Literature Prize National committees in Greenland Iceland and the Faeroe Islands have submitted their nominations for the prize to be awarded in August 2006 By Lisbeth Brodin Frozen toes and elves are some of the themes in the books that have been nominated for the West Nordic Council s Children and Young People s Literature Prize The nominated books are From Greenland Nissimaat nissimaajaqqallu Elves and small elves by Grethe Guldager illustrated by Nuka Godfredsen Atuakkiorfik From Iceland The frozen toes written and illustrated by Sigrún Eldjár From the Faeroe Islands A dog a cat and a mouse written and illustrated by Bárður Oskarsson The winner is selected by a West Nordic Jury that consists of representatives from each of the three national committees The West Nordic Council s Children and Young People s Literature Prize is worth DKK 60 000 and is awarded during the West Nordic Council s annual meeting in August The previous prize winners in 2002 and 2004 were both times from Iceland 2002 Sagan af bláa hnettinum by Andri

  • Human library in Iceland — Valhalla
    The idea behind the human library originates in Denmark The first human library was held during Roskilde festival in 2000 Later the idea was applied in connection with lots of various events in a number of countries in Europe One cannot borrow books from a human library however here one can borrow people These people are representatives for specific social groups often exposed to prejudices and discrimination Thus you can borrow these books and have a talk with your book When the art festival was held here in Reykjavik in the beginning of November we thought it would be great to introduce the Human Library in connection with the festival To begin with we read a lot about how the library was organised in other countries Later Ronni Abergel one of the initiators of the whole thing back in 2000 visited us Ronni gave us a lecture on the Human Library Among other things he explained how the idea should be implemented He also gave some good tips on what one should keep in mind and avoid while organising a human library Ronni s lecture and advice turned out to be very helpful when we had to tackle the task

  • NAPA on a workshop tour for pupils in Northern Greenland — Valhalla
    workshop in Kangersuatsiaq was cancelled NAPA is a Nordic cultural institution that has children and young people among its priorities This year the workshop was held in week 46 and 47 together with Solo Cissokho from Senegal who now lives in Norway He was teaching about his tribe s Mandinga national instrument Kora and African djembe drum Emile Mølgaard from Ilulissat who now is a member of men s choir Qissiat in Nuuk was teaching about Greenlandic singing traditions The idea behind the workshop is that Greenlandic pupils should have an opportunity to meet and feel another unusual culture and that people living in the periphery should experience a workshop The pupils were tremendously excited about their two eminent workshop instructors and here are some comments about the kids impressions The pupils were wildly excited Otto Therkildsen headmaster in Ilimanaq We have to this again and use more time Hans Christian Hjort headmaster in Upernavik In Ilimanaq there were 11 pupils from all the forms The pupils were divided into 2 groups One of the groups had a 2 day course on Greenlandic singing games and one of the oldest Greenlandic songs Their instructor was Emile Mølgaard In the second
