    was installed in Statuary Hall of the US Capitol as a tribute to Dr Borlaug the Father of the Green Revolution and the man who is credited with saving a billion lives through his wheat research Several members of the Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation attended the installation and dedication View Slideshow of Ceremony Reception Get Updates More NBHF Facebook Pages Please Like Us View Spring Inspire 2015 Photos Video on Our Facebook Page 5 2 2015 Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation The Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation is a non profit corporation with an all volunteer board dedicated to the preservation of the Birthplace and Boyhood home of Dr Norman E Borlaug 1914 2009 where he established his values and work ethic The Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation is committed to promoting Dr Borlaug s lifetime achievements and philosophy through education programs such as the Norman Borlaug Education Day or Inspire Day and the Education Residency Program For over a half century the scientific and humanitarian achievements of Dr Norman Borlaug Nobel Peace Prize winner Congressional Gold Medal Winner and recipient of over 50 honorary Doctorate Degrees kept starvation at bay for millions of people in third world countries Gregg Easterbrook wrote of Borlaug Though barely known in the country of his birth elsewhere in the world Norman Borlaug is widely considered to be among the leading Americans of our age Our Goal The Foundation s immediate goals are centered around funding an endowment for the restoration and upkeep of Dr Borlaug s Birthplace and Boyhood home and schoolhouse and the continuation of the Borlaug Education Outreach Program Education was extremely important to Dr Borlaug and much of the work carried on by the Foundation centers around education In His Own Words I realize how fortunate I was to have been born to

    Undergraduate Scholarship page Meet the 2013 Recipient Dan Doeing NBHF Programs A depression can come and go but nobody can take an education away from you Dr Borlaug The importance of education became clear to Dr Borlaug at an early age Dr Borlaug often acknowledged that his grandfather Nels was an extremely influential person in his life Norm and his grandfather loved to go fishing and it was during some of these lighter moments that his grandfather provided Norm with important life lessons Grandfather Nels often counseled Norm boy with philosophies like Education and common sense thinking things out for yourself that s what really matters Get yourself a good education No one can take that away from you There are four programs that were approved by Dr Borlaug and the first charter of the Foundation in 1999 The four programs that are part of that charter include The Borlaug Education Residency Program The Preservaton Program The Seminar Education Program The Scholarship Program The Borlaug Education Residency Program challenges our citizenry through the arts sciences and humanities to better understand important global issues including hunger world peace cultural diversity leadership agricultural science the environment and service learning Through the education program Dr Borlaug s scientific and humanitarian career serves as a catalyst for Americans to better understand their responsibilities in service to others Learn more The Norman Borlaug Historic Preservation Program is an important part of the Foundation s mission to honor and strengthen the legacy of Dr Borlaug Preservation may include any physical or philosophical aspect of his life and times which the Foundation deems to be a treasure for others to learn from and appreciate Whatever preservation the foundation may become involved in centers around educating students and the public about the values and accomplishments of Dr Borlaug

    think the first requirement for a life achievement a solid place to step off from Dr Borlaug To obtain application resources visit the Iowa State University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences visit the Undergraduate Scholarship page Scholarship Program Get a university education Get there Norm boy any way you can Grandfather Nels He s no great shakes as a scholar his arithetic is awful but he sticks to it He s got grit High school will make him Sina Borlaug Cousin Teacher The scholarship program is very active Every summer the NBHF has hosted an intern at the farm Because of the sponsorship of Jack and Fran Thomson the Borlaug Internship has been able to continue If you look up the Borlaug Thomson scholarship under Iowa State University s Agriculture College you will see it listed It is one of the largest monetary scholarships thanks to the Thomsons The Borlaug Thomson Internship is administered by ISU The Borlaug Scholarship is under the Crestwood Dollars for Scholars umbrella At one time if a student received a Dollars for Scholars award it had the possibility of being doubled by the receiving university or college That is the reason for the Borlaug

    Farm Take a Virtual Tour of Signs Property NBHF Historic Preservation Program I grew up on the land on a small farm in Northeast Iowa Dr Borlaug The preservation of Dr Norman Borlaug s legacy is an important part of the Foundation s mission Preservation may include any physical or philosophical aspect of his life and times which the Foundation deems to be a treasure for others to learn from and appreciate Whatever preservation the foundation may become involved in centers around educating students and the public about the values and accomplishments of Dr Borlaug Completed Projects Preservation has been completed on the boyhood house including window and woodwork restoration new wiring plumbing septic system basement bath furnace water heater security system and more Many original Borlaug artifacts have been placed in the home See photos of the Before and After on the Boyhood Home page Landscape work is ongoing and much has been completed already including trenching of all electrical wires and planting of shrubs and trees At the Spring 2013 Inspire Day students helped plant new trees in the area around the schoolhouse The schoolhouse has been restored and an access ramp has been added A memorial to

    we ve worked together through Global 2000 of The Carter Center and the Sasakawa Africa Association to help small scale farmers to improve agricultural productivity and crop quality sometimes two or even threefold It has been an honor to collaborate with Dr Borlaug He is a true humanitarian and a dear friend President Jimmy Carter Residency Program Just don t stop asking why things are the way they are Grandfather Nels Overview The Borlaug Education Residency Program challenges our citizenry through the arts sciences and humanities to better understand important global issues including hunger world peace cultural diversity leadership agricultural science the environment and service learning Through the education program Dr Borlaug s scientific and humanitarian career serves as a catalyst for Americans to better understand their responsibilities in service to others The Foundation recognizes Dr Borlaug s contributions to the world with a primary goal of reaching American K 12 schools colleges and communities informing them of his work and values Through the Borlaug Residency Program students and communities are encouraged to serve humankind with the same convictions and tenacity that has served Dr Borlaug throughout his life Program Participation The education program is designed to encourage creative thinking and initiatives regarding issues which Dr Borlaug has encountered during his distinguished career Each year elected participants receive stipends to research study or create in their respective fields work which reflects Dr Borlaug s philosophy and career Whenever possible participants are encouraged to blend their research abilities and creative talents and to share their work with students and communities Participants may express themselves through genres of the written word including nonfiction journalism drama poetry and fiction photography pottery music painting dance and other visual and performing arts Each school year selected participants travel to participating K 12 schools and post

    for a life achievement a solid place to step off from Dr Borlaug NBHF Education Programs An Area of Emphasis The Seminar Education Program is one of the four areas of emphasis established by Dr Borlaug in the original charter of 1999 The NBHF places a great importance on educating others about the work of Dr Borlaug and about topics related to his life and work Each year members of the NBHF provide educational experiences at the farm for students and teachers Each spring and fall the NBHF plans and hosts Inspire Days Members are also available for speaking engagements and for informational tours of the Borlaug farm and buildings The Importance of Education Norm s sister Palma spoke about her brother s passion for learning Norman was always asking questions he had a curious mind Growing things fascinated him from his childhood He always had a feeling for plants a pasionate desire to know how they grew He was curious about the change of seasons and the migrations of wild ducks and geese He would ask Why do the other birds robins blackbirds bobolinks not migrate in flocks like ducks and geese And why do the weasel and jackrabbit change their brown coats to white During his early school years his grandfather Nels was probably the most influential person when in came to being earnest about learning His cousin and teacher Sina also encouraged him to pursue more education than was common for the time Both of these individuals told his parents and Norman that he should continue his education by attending high school in Cresco twelve miles to the north of the Borlaug farm Because of the distance Norm had to stay in Cresco part of the time That meant he wasn t able to help on the
