27 districts willingly gave up a week of their summer to participate in Math in CTE training Each CTE teacher worked with a math partner in the development of math enhanced lessons and supportive instructional tools learning new ways to teach their respective content areas During the training math and CTE teacher teams called the curriculum mapping process an eye opening experience as they learned how much math is embedded in the Business and Health Occupations curricula CTE teachers presented their math enhanced lessons to the entire group and were provided constructive feedback from their colleagues on the math enhanced lessons My working relationship with my math partner is much stronger and the synergy gained from this professional development will help us be better educators which in turn will help our students become better learners and achievers in core classes as well as CTE classes said one Missouri CTE teacher Math teachers expressed optimism at the idea of using some of the CTE lesson concepts within their math classrooms to provide students with real world applications of math The teachers and the NRCCTE facilitators also enjoyed some after hours group activities specifically chosen to enhance the team building that developed during the training Activities included a dinner theatre murder mystery production held at a local winery an evening tour of the historic Missouri State Penitentiary a visit to the Missouri State Capitol and an evening of live music on the streets of downtown Jefferson City Pictured in the photo above are the Missouri Business teachers who participated in the Math in CTE professional development training with their NRCCTE facilitator Vicki Mivshek front center and teacher facilitator Gary Tenhulzen kneeling Calendar of Events Press Releases Core Issues View All Career Pathways Programs of Study Curriculum Integration Retention Completion Accountability Assessment Related

a regional format that spans the entire state Three regions North South and Salt Lake City are all working with NRCCTE facilitators to enhance the math in the Family and Consumer Sciences FACS curriculum A number of teachers and administrators used their experience from the 2010 2011 implementation to serve as local facilitators The Northern Utah regional summer professional development held in June of 2011 focused on Foods I and II and Clothing I and II Organizers provided daily door prizes ranging from water bottles to an overnight stay at a local bed and breakfast As a math teacher I have realized that I need to incorporate more real life problems I usually feel like we do not have time to spend on too many of these problems because they take so long for the students to work through I will definitely do it this year because I know that it is worth the time said one Utah teacher participating in the training The FACS teachers learned the importance of recognizing and teaching embedded math concepts using correct mathematical terms and calculations they also developed extended applications to assist students in bridging the gap between traditional classroom math and career infused mathematics Both FACS and math educators benefited from lesson development collaboration as math teachers learned new ways to incorporate career oriented math into their classroom experience for students Pictured in the photo above are math educator Jennifer Tanner left and FACS teacher Gail Ferrin right as they work to complete their lesson plan for presentation to whole group participating in the Math in CTE professional development Calendar of Events Press Releases Core Issues View All Career Pathways Programs of Study Curriculum Integration Retention Completion Accountability Assessment Related Reports What Is College and Career Ready Math Read more Oregon Applied

lessons students in the classrooms of teachers trained in the Math in CTE model performed significantly better on standardized math tests and community college math placement tests than students who received the regular CTE curriculum Moreover students improved their math skills without losing the important technical skills needed for college and career readiness As part of its evaluation of the model s implementation the NRCCTE analyzed data from focus groups surveys observations and teaching reports to determine what worked and what didn t These analyses led to the development of the model s five core principles PDF The results of the Math in CTE study were published in the American Educational Research Journal Stone J R III Alfeld C Pearson D 2008 Rigor and relevance Testing a model of enhanced math learning in career and technical education American Educational Research Journal 45 3 767 795 Online access subscription required Sustaining the Impact Follow Up of Teachers Who Participated in the Math in CTE Study NRCCTE researchers examined whether teachers who participated in the original Math in CTE study would continue to use the pedagogic methods and lessons that had been developed for the study after it ended The follow up took place almost one year after the study concluded and included all three groups of teachers who had participated Teachers were no longer actively involved in the Math in CTE professional development activities The researchers found that almost 73 of the experimental CTE teachers continued to use the Math in CTE methods and materials 66 of the math teachers used methods or examples from the model and 27 of the control CTE teachers who had not participated in the full Math in CTE professional development process taught one or more of the lessons in the school year after the study
