  • Online Occupational Education in Community Colleges: Prevalence, Context, and Organizational Approaches | NRCCTE
    adapt to economic and workforce development demands community colleges will continue to play an important role by providing flexible low cost job specific and high quality opportunities for diverse groups of students Although online education permeates most community colleges some offer more online programs than others and programs in some fields are more widely offered than others This study examined the current state of online occupational programs in community colleges the connection between institutional economic and social indicators that influence the prevalence of online occupational programs and the connection of those programs to workforce development needs Findings indicated that although the number of online occupational education programs available nationwide has reached respectable levels additional growth is needed in key areas to more fully meet workforce development needs In order to promote availability and accessibility coherent online occupational programs rather than a hodgepodge of online courses need to be offered Further as community college enrollment reaches record levels online courses provide them with an opportunity to expand enrollment without building new facilities Through their workforce development efforts community colleges are playing a central role in revitalizing the U S economy and the evidence from this study has expanded on theoretical and practical knowledge in the CTE field about workforce development needs institutional issues and economic conditions affecting online occupational programs Read the latest article by the study s authors in Career and Technical Education Research September 2012 Read an article that cites this study Community College Training for Managing Green Jobs in the New York Times August 25 2010 Read an article about this study by Rod Githens Going Green Online Distance Learning Prepares Students in the Community College Journal June July 2010 Download Project Overview Related Reports Research Based Pedagogies for Career and Technical Education Read more High Quality CTE

    Programs of Study Year 3 Joint Technical Report Jul 2011 Authors Programs of Study Joint Technical Working Group Executive Summary Programs of Study POS were the most significant new requirement in the 2006 reauthorization of the federal legislation for career and technical education CTE Consequently the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education NRCCTE established as one of its priorities the development of information on the operation and effectiveness of POS The NRCCTE is conducting four projects that examine POS from different perspectives Three are longitudinal studies due to the nature of their methodologies they are at different stages of implementation These three studies use some common data collection methods that allow for comparisons across studies and use others that are specific to their research questions This document comprises the second joint report related to these three projects and presents their status as of July 31 2010 the end of Year 3 of the current NRCCTE cooperative agreement with the U S Department of Education The first joint report presented findings and observations derived from the first two years of these projects Programs of Study Joint Technical Working Group 2010 The fourth project described in this report was conducted entirely during NRCCTE Year 3 This project used case study methods to describe how six states were implementing POS during the first half of 2010 four years after POS had become part of the federal legislation for CTE Before discussing the four projects we provide some background on how POS came to be required by Perkins IV Programs of Study Joint Technical Working Group 2011 July Programs of study Year 3 joint technical report Louisville KY National Research Center for Career and Technical Education Louisville KY PDF document Read the Research Snapshot Read the Report Research Reports Impact Reports Brochures

  • Relative Impact of Interventions to Improve Achievement and Retention in Postsecondary Occupational Programs | NRCCTE
    Minnesota Amy Hirschy Marisa Castellano University of Louisville Bruce Center Aaron Geise Amanuel Medhanie University of Minnesota Abstract This study seeks to identify which interventions are most effective in improving retention and academic outcomes for students in postsecondary occupational programs and how student characteristics mediate and moderate these effects with the goal of determining what works best for which types of students Four community colleges are participating in the study This report presents information on the study purpose site characteristics data sources retention related interventions found at two or more sites data analysis methods and early findings Descriptions of examples of specific interventions are included and will provide a basis for determining the comparability of similar programs across sites at a subsequent point in the study This report describes project activities and findings during the period of August 2009 to July 2010 A second cohort of students those matriculating at the sites in Fall 2010 has been added to the study and will be discussed in future reports as data become available Bremer C D Opsal C Hirschy A Castellano M Center B Geise A Medhanie A 2011 July Relative impact of interventions to improve achievement and retention in postsecondary
