    Minority Communities You are here Home Publications Resources Research Reports Career Based Comprehensive School Career Based Comprehensive School Reform Serving Disadvantaged Youth in Minority Communities Oct 2007 Authors Marisa Castellano University of Louisville James R Stone III University of Minnesota Sam Stringfield University of Louisville Elizabeth N Farley Ripple University of Pennsylvania Laura T Overman Roshan Hussain University of Louisville High school engagement and achievement were measured using attendance dropout course taking and graduation data High school transition was measured using responses to a senior survey participation in Tech Prep and dual credit opportunities and achievement data for the graduates who attended their local community college All measures were compared to the comparison school students The outcomes were mixed None of the three schools achieved consistent gains over their respective comparison group on measures of academic achievement However one finding held true across all six high schools The odds of dropping out declined as the proportion of the high school experience invested in CTE courses increased In terms of transition to postsecondary more students reported having a post high school plan than their comparison school counterparts at two of the three study schools Many students at the study schools aligned their next step with their high school course of study Finally most of the students who attended their local community college needed to take remedial coursework The implications of these findings are discussed Castellano M Stone J R III Stringfield S C Farley Ripple E N Overman L T Hussain R 2007 October Career based comprehensive school reform Serving disadvantaged youth in minority communities St Paul MN National Research Center for Career and Technical Education University of Minnesota Read the Research Snapshot Read the Report Research Reports Impact Reports Brochures Journal Magazine Articles The Idea Center Videos Podcasts Webinars Presentations

  • Stackable credentials: A framework for career pathways? | NRCCTE
    the good jobs will require postsecondary education This is one of the drivers behind the dramatic growth of associate 31 baccalaureate 24 and graduate 45 degrees in the past decade Yet employers bemoan a lack of skilled applicants In a recent survey of employers more than half of large companies and two thirds of small companies said that finding the right talent for their open jobs was difficult They were looking for skills Skills and traditional college degrees it would appear are not necessarily the same thing Programs of study career pathways and other strategies are intended to improve the transition from education to the workplace but are largely still couched in terms of traditional educational credentials and the assumption that all youth will or should follow a linear progression from high school to college to work Such assumptions tend to ignore the reality confronting high school graduates regarding the cost of traditional higher education the capacity of institutions to absorb new entrants and indeed the preference of many for a different approach to learning The following article from a higher education publication illustrates an important alternative adaption to the needs of youth and adults to acquire skills and eventually traditional educational credentials through a process of obtaining stackable credentials In this article the authors provide a higher education perspective by noting that potential disruptions to higher education typically portend a diminished role for the academy in workforce training as students ditch college for well something else But one of the most promising alternative credentialing movements the manufacturing industry s system of stackable certificates has actually led to a deeper more symbiotic relationship between employers and colleges The growing partnership has also given rise to a blended model of higher education where the manufacturing industry takes the lead on standards

  • Home health aides: The fastest-growing job pays poorly. | NRCCTE
    case labor market trends which can and have been disputed point toward a reality that the three highs are partially mutually exclusive A recent report by CNN Money illustrates this conundrum Nearly 2 million mostly minorities and women home health care workers do everything from prepare meals and clean homes to bathe and change bedpans for elderly and disabled patients As Baby Boomers age this job is expected to explode growing 70 between 2010 and 2020 according to the Labor Department That makes it the single fastest growing job in the United States according to their forecasts Call it the silver tsunami Roughly every eight seconds a Baby Boomer turns 65 And that has led to surging demand for in home care This isn t just a surge a one time hiring spurt This is something we will do this year and into the future said Paul Hogan chairman of Home Instead Senior Care which alone plans to hire 45 000 caregivers in North America this year It s all driven by the growth in the senior population The BLS projects that we will need over 700 000 home health aides The report referenced by CNN includes data on other high growth jobs like biomedical engineers but it is important to keep in mind that high growth may or may not mean lots of jobs Biomedical Engineers may show high growth but there are relatively few employed in that field around 115 000 So we can expect approximately 9 000 new job openings for biomedical engineers the same number projected for rebar workers in the next decade These and other data suggest two strategies for CTE We need to ensure that all students learn how to become their own bosses and acquire entrepreneurial skills We need to maintain a strong
