started I know I did First of all don t be thinkin that you can t compete until you are a super duper kite flier first To the contrary if you wish to improve your flying skills more quickly and receive help from experienced some world class flyers start competing and don t be afraid to ask questions Just about any flyer is glad to help and loves to talk

Field Director will show you each figure if you like to help you remember what figures you are flying Ideally you would like to have them committed to memory but this is great brain cramp insurance or to make up for the fact that you have to work for a living and didn t get to practice Take advantage of it if you feel at all uncomfortable about it The 3 Figures will be 60 of the total score The other 40 of your score will come from another part of your precision routine called freestyle You can think of this as your opportunity to show the judges how well you can control your kite It s generally best to only do things that you do well and reliably If you can do something fancy such as an Axel but only get it right 1 2 the time save it for when you get better at it The best thing you can do to improve your score is to fly straight lines very straight curved lines smoothly and try to keep the kite from wobbling when completing sharp turns Another goal to shoot for is try to fly at a consistent speed by moving yourself backward to speed the kite up or forward slow it down Webmaster Update Performance Precision is now an option for event organizers This a faster event since the three compulsory figures are incorporated into the freestyle and not flown as seperate entities Only three figures will be announced before prior to the event If interested here is some additional information Program Precision Seminar Outline Ballet is very much like a figure skater skating to music only the kite is the skater You are trying to make the kite reflect the music The kite should show the judges and audience the music s mood and tempo changes individual instruments or even the lyrics Picking music is a very important step The music you choose should be something that you like since you will be listening to it a LOT Music with a lot of mood or tempo changes is the best way to go It gives you opportunities or a changes in music that you can show how well you can change way the kite flies to the music Classical music and Soundtracks are good sources of music with a lot of opportunities Your ballet will need to be between 2 00 minutes and 4 00 minutes in length It s best not to push those limits too closely because players don t always run at the exact speed as yours and stop watches used to time the music might not get pushed at quite the right time If your music is 3 58 seconds in length a 1 error in the player s speed and or Field Director s stopwatch operation could make your music run 2 4 seconds longer bummer CD Players are pretty tightly controlled for speed and currently the rules require your

to 90 and has wingspan of about 7 feet It is a big step up in flying ability and is well worth the extra cost if you can swing it These are just some examples There are lots of good reasonably priced kites out there Talk to your local kite shop or one of the many on the web about others I m just hoping to convince you to use that 30 on something useful rather than flushing it on a cheap kite that will be frustrating instead of fun The next piece of gear that can be a little hard to get past is flying line Just any old string doesn t cut it At least not very well Think of the lines that attach your hands to the kite as been much like the suspension on a car If the shocks and springs are soft and sloppy your car is unstable as you drive The same thing happens with your kite with stretchy lines You try to turn the kite the line stretches and nothing happens for a while Good line can turn a kite from being a handful into a kite that s a blast to fly The material that the line is made of is called Spectra and it will cost about 20 to 40 depending on the strength and length You may notice that some people have literally bags full of kites for every wind condition If you can only have one kite been there buying a range of lines will get you a lot of the same effect as having Super Ultra Light Standard and Vented kites for lots less money The weight or strength of flying lines varies from as low as 35 lb to as much as 500 lb or more The weight of the line has a significant effect on the light of the kite Using a light weight such 50 lb with a low wind 4 to 6 mph can make a kite fly well when it would barely fly with 150 lb It has a lot more impact than you would probably think On the other end of the wind range 50 lb line would snap in an instant with 15 mph wind The heavy line will also slow the kite down and give you better control in higher winds because it is thicker creating more drag as the line moves through the air This is why 500 lb line might be used even though you do not need that much strength One more aspect of flying line is the length Most line on the kite store shelf tends to be around 50 to 75 feet in length This length of line is just fine for a lot of fun flying but for flying in competition longer lines of 100 to 125 feet is worth it s weight in gold The longer line gives you a MUCH bigger window to fly your kite in which does 2 things for

listen for announcements about your class needing to report to the pit area At that time you need to get you and your equipment into the pit area DO NOT FLY YOUR KITE S IN THE PIT AREA CARRY IT IN This is for safety reasons since this area can get pretty busy In the vicinity of the pit area is a person known as the Pit Boss they usually have a radio clipboard and sometimes they have a bright vest on The Pit Boss needs to know that you have arrived at the pits and are ready to compete It is YOUR responsibility to check in with the Pit Boss If you do not check in on time you may be disqualified One more thing about the pit area there is usually one end of the pit area designated for entering the competition field while the other end is designated for exiting the competition field This helps keep competitors moving smoothly onto and off the field For the same reason that you can t fly your kite into the pit area safety you are not allowed to fly your kite onto or off of the competition field You need to carry your kite and lines onto the field to do this you will need someone to help you That works out very well though because when you compete you will want to have another person know as a spotter on the field in the vicinity of the kite to help you in case you have any problems on the field such as a crash Don t have a spotter Just ask another competitor if they would spot for you or ask the Pit Boss for a suggestion of who might be able to spot for you When you and your kite have crossed the boundary you can fly your kite from that point to where you want to be located to start your routine Be careful though not to fly back over the boundary line because this will disqualify you When you are done competing you ll be pumped so please don t forget to not fly the kite over the boundary line I have seen more than one good flight spoiled by a brief brain cramp at the end Once on the field you will find a small group of people out there One of them is know as the Field Director This person is the interface between you the judges and the sound announcement folks The Field Director is a competitor s best friend out there so treat them well If you are flying in Precision they will remind you of the figures that you need to fly complete with diagrams They will let you know about time issues like you are taking too much time and need to be ready to fly quickly the judges are not ready yet or the sound crew doesn t know which track you need because you didn t mark it
