architecture to be particularly daring open endless avenues not so much in the Soviet perspektiva style but in an exuberant show of innocence and confidence And despite the alternate day vehicle ban daunting traffic jams packed with recent cars made here under foreign or local badges The purpose of the trip here is to represent OASIS at the CESI SOA Forum a lavish event that demonstrates the rising power of China in the service oriented architecture SOA landscape Accompanying me is Eduardo Gutentag Chairman of the OASIS Board and Guru of standards at Sun Microsystems Eduardo is quite adept at navigating Chinese waters and has been kind enough to coach me Of course the day of the conference is when American election results are rolling in remember the time difference However there s no Internet access in the ballroom so some of us Americans rush up to their rooms which are wired to get the latest By noon John McCain has conceded and it looks like proposition 8 which overturns gay marriage in California will be passing I feel oddly disconnected from these events even though I have been focused on them for so long all so far away barely audible barely registering Another historical event is taking place before our very eyes the involvement of China the most populous nation in the world and one of the most energetic in our staid standards process This will change the face of standards setting forever It s not hard to imagine that Chinese companies and government will weigh in heavily on the development of future service oriented architectures Software vendors and OASIS members already know this and anyone who s participated in ISO work realizes that Asia and China in particular is claiming its rightful place in the standards universe OASIS has a local office hosted by the ChangFeng Alliance ChangFeng functions a bit like an incubator it represents scores of Beijing based software companies such as Primeton TongTech and Digital China and understands the competitive advantage and recognition conferred by standards which makes the Alliance a natural partner for OASIS They also know how to do business here The border between government and private enterprise is fuzzy and no foreigner can penetrate that idiosyncrasy without indigenous help If only because of the language barrier That said you will find the Chinese are hospitable charming witty humorous and keenly aware of business issues once you engage them in conversation They are also proud of their rejuvenated country and increasing power and seem to speak freely enough of their own system within reason I find myself wishing I could separate myself from the rest of the Western delegation and go native in order to glean some genuine insights into the soul of this remarkable people and perhaps confirm or do away with some of the romantic notions I have formed as an admirer of Zhang Yimou s cinematography One last note for today the food I m a vegetarian and was assured
