    abbrev pmrm It s also our sense that software vendor and Big Data analysis companies will do the right thing if there s a technical standard they can adopt to help them protect consumer privacy right in the code As it turns out such a standard does exist it s called OASIS Privacy By Design for Software Engineers https www oasis open org committees tc home php wg abbrev pbd se One of the key architects of this TC is Dawn Jutla who teaches at St Mary s University Sobey School of Business This is what Dawn writes in The Privacy Engineer s Manifesto an anthology published by Apress Open and edited by Michelle Finneran Dennedy Jonathan Fox and Thomas R Finneran The advantages of privacy standards are manifold They include building a common and widespread understanding of privacy governance among adopting organizations at an international level and creating consistent compliance auditing criteria and user expectations across industries Privacy standards can promote better system design facilitate information interchange and interoperability and foster innovation through multi stakeholder collaboration Some organizations may leverage the resulting privacy enhanced products and services for market differentiation If you re a software engineer you re probably thinking That s all nice but my boss is breathing down my neck and asking me to innovate and find better ways to track people and their needs not ways to protect their information Here s what Dawn has to say about that there is a growing sense among experts that many internet companies renowned for innovation and high levels of experimentation with new services are not well versed in best practices for privacy governance These relatively young companies and many others would benefit from more comprehensive privacy governance guidelines from the executive to the unit software testing levels Here
