    analysis of grant making and grant seeking activities focusing on social sciences in the ERA Why focusing on mobility Mobility amongst the core notions of the ERA implies a variety of different meanings it recalls to freedom of movement as a characterizing pattern of EU architecture it expresses the inter linkage between knowledge and development as a way to bolster EU competitiveness it identifies policy orientations for reforming the European academic system towards the harmonization it evokes new criteria for evaluating researchers profiles Questioning mobility s signifiers allows us to explore how the wider scenario of the European research area is being transformed beyond policy oriented or career oriented issues This approach might also help researchers research institutions and grant makers to better understand the complex picture of the European research funding both in order to plan their activities in an increasingly competitive environment and to exploit the possibilities that this scenario can offer For further information on the notion of mobility as a conceptual tool to explore the functioning of the ERA see this paper Backward The OMERA database presents so far the results of the first phase of the research project The funding of social sciences research in the ERA promoted by the Torino world affairs institute since 2010 with the support of Compagnia di San Paolo In the first phase of the project the funding initiatives of a variegated sample of actors including foundations institutes of advanced studies national European and international research funding organizations and think tanks have been analyzed through the collection of data related to 41 variables concerning actors type class country staff financing type evaluation periodical how to apply who can apply salary benefits length and nature of the research project specific for social sciences aim geographic thematic methodological focus For further information
