  • OSEA: Green Energy Act provincial tour
know that they support a green energy act says Khlaire Parré who is co ordinating the outreach effort The Minister of Energy and Infrastructure George Smitherman has already indicated his commitment to introducing a green energy act There is also already wide backing for such legislation according to a poll commissioned by OSEA last summer that showed that more than 90 per cent of the people surveyed supported a green energy act as a way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions However broad public support is now needed to ensure that any legislation put forward by the government incorporates the key elements sought by the Green Energy Act Alliance These are the right to connect to the grid fair and profitable prices for renewable energy and priority purchasing of renewables In preparation for the upcoming public meetings caucuses of OSEA members are being formed in different regions These include southwestern Ontario from Sarnia to Kincardine taking in Walpole Island and London the Greater Toronto Area plus Kitchener and Hamilton eastern Ontario including Ottawa Oshawa and Kingston the near north from the Georgian Bay area to Manitoulin Island and the far north from Thunder Bay to Kenora Key people in these parts of the province have been contacted to help make arrangements and to ascertain the specific issues about sustainable energy that are relevant in their communities As well as holding public meetings to explain the proposed green energy act OSEA will be training some of its members to become advocates so that they can continue to inform and educate people about renewable energy and the legislation required to make everyone both a conserver and generator of electricity For this purpose an advocacy kit has been prepared It includes simple strategies for winning support for a green energy act such as sponsoring
