    entitled to receive If the employer breaches this Agreement either the employee or the union may launch a grievance which if not resolved between the parties is judged by an independent arbitration board whose s decision final and binding on all concerned BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP The negotiated wages working conditions employee benefits and access to the grievance procedure apply to all persons in the bargaining unit whether or not they are union members However only union members can have a voice in determining bargaining proposals attend union meetings vote in union elections and attend union sponsored educational seminars Similarly only signed up members of OPSEU have the right to hold elected office in the union OPSEU members also receive frequent union publications and bulletins Also available to members is the extensive membership discounts on such things as cell phone service home and auto insurance and law protector An OPSEU member who leaves the workforce by reason of age infirmity or disability is entitled to become a Retired Member on payment of 2 00 per year or 10 00 for like membership SERVICES OFFERED BY OPSEU OPSEU has a full time staff of professional people to help members negotiate collective agreements and resolve grievances and other problems that arise at the workplace Staff Representatives work out of Regional Offices throughout the province to assist members in handling grievances negotiating local matters or dealing with management In addition to the Staff Representatives who are the union s primary link to the locals OPSEU Head Office maintains specialized departments Grievance Officers handle grievance presentations to boards of arbitration OPSEU also employs negotiators who negotiate collective agreements for members in all categories of the Ontario Public Service CAAT Academic and Support Staff Liquor Control Board Division and for members under the Ontario Labour Relations Act Research staff are available to assist in collective bargaining and health and Safety specialists advise on matters arising from the Occupational Health and Safety Act Organizing reps are involved in the signing up of new groups who want to join OPSEU and have OPSEU represent them with their employer Public Relations specialists publish a number of union media documents prepare brochures leaflets bulletins speeches and newsletter Education staff run programs designed to strengthen local members ability to handle their own affairs Courses are given in such subjects as stewards training grievance handling union administration contract interpretation instructional techniques for member instructors parliamentary procedures and public relations Since 1978 OPSEU has had a full time Equal Opportunities Coordinator to conduct programs aimed at increasing the participation of women in locals and in the union as a whole Since then other equity seeking groups have been formed for a similar purpose WHERE DO I FIT INTO OPSEU If you join OPSEU you will be a member of a local In each community college there are two locals one for members in the Academic unit and one for those in the Support Staff unit The members of each local elect their stewards

    all matters pertaining to Health and Safety of the 360 Support Staff Members who work for Sheridan College at the three main Brampton and Oakville campus locations Linda is Level 2 Certified a Volunteer Member of Sheridan s Inter Campus Health and Safety Committee and has been the Co Chair of the Oakville campus Joint Health and Safety Committee since 2003 Linda serves as coach and principle training resource and with the help of her fellow Committee Members provides due diligence for College Health and Safety matters During 2006 when the College had no permanent Manager in the Health Safety office Linda was there when called upon for Work Refusals and Accident Inspections to voice OPSEU Members concerns with College Vice Presidents Directors and the Ministry Inspectors Since 2002 Linda has been helping to establish College Control Programs for the handling of All paints and cleaning chemicals Isocyanides in the manufacture of theatre props Silicon in the polishing of glass and ceramic projects Identification and Removal of Mould and Level 3 Asbestos Removal The summer of 2009 Linda worked closely with the Ministry of Labour to deal with workers getting sick in our textile area It was originally thought to be a mould issue then maybe ventilation but was eventually determined to be neither In this industry workers are particularly susceptible to sensitivities to various dyes and chemicals that build up over the years particularly as they tend to mix small amounts of chemicals together to get just the right shade of blue or just the right effect for their next project These compounds were not meant to be combined in this way but everybody does it As a result of her diligent work this summer a new focus is being placed on safety awareness and training of students taking

    sit side by side with full time staff and do the same work for less pay no benefits and no guarantee of work from one semester to the next says Libby Simpson representing Sheridan workers It s very unfair because they bring the same level of skills experience and qualifications to the job Until last year it was against the law in Ontario for part time support staff to unionize That prompted colleges to hire more part timers to save money by not having to pay for benefits and decent wages both of which were won by full timers through collective bargaining The roughly 10 000 part time college support staff now outnumber their 7 000 full time colleagues What does it say about our province when institutions like our colleges offer nothing more than precarious part time temporary work to more than 60 per cent of support staff adds Simpson We need good jobs with decent wages and benefits in order to raise our families and build strong communities About half of college part timers are student workers involved in financial assistance programs like the Ontario Work Study Plan says OPSEU student organizer Kiera Chion Students at the colleges

    member of the Legal Aid Board for Halton This award recognizes political action and as a member of the OPSEU Area Council Jay has participated in a number of political action lobbies in provincial election campaigns He has made the supreme sacrifice by offering himself as a candidate for the New Democratic Party for North Halton He was the voice of labour to the community throughout that campaign participating in debates and forums and increasing the NDP presence in this riding During many strikes Jay has spoken out on behalf of workers and participated in picket lines and has represented workers to the press His involvement in the days of action throughout this province during the Harris era was remarkable as he donated his skills as a photographer to cover the action for the union As a tireless supporter of members he has spent countless hours counselling and representing workers in grievances and arbitration His strong negotiation and mediation skills have enabled many workers have their rights defended CAAT support has much language which enhances our rights due to his skills as chair of the provincial bargaining team He is known for his cool head in handling difficult situations and has earned the respect of workers and management alike One example of this is in 1996 as chair of the local Employment Stability committee when the college notified the union of huge cutbacks which precipitated over 100 lay off notices to the members of local 245 This process was arduous and upsetting for the members Jay s leadership resulted in the majority of members being placed in other jobs or being bridged to retirement As OPSEU EBM and RVP he has shown leadership in reviving and supporting strong regional membership education which has resulted in an upsurge of activists in

    to hold a Picket Painting Protocol event The purpose of the event is to show solidarity and support for their bargaining team and to inform the membership of some very important legal and safety related do s and don ts on the picket line Local 245 had requested the use of Sheridan property to hold these events well in advance and after some delay Sheridan HR replied the college is not prepared to allow the use of College property for this purpose Jay Jackson OPSEU Local 245 President was surprised by the college s response saying This is the first time ever that the employer has denied OPSEU space on college property to hold union activities These events will be held on public grounds outside the college campuses as follows Trafalgar Road campus Oakville August 26 2008 12 00 2 00 p m On the west side of Trafalgar Road by the northern most Sheridan sign Davis campus Brampton August 26 2008 5 00 7 00 p m On the east side of McLaughlin Road by the main entrance July 16th Support Staff province wide rejected management s contract proposals and voted to give their bargaining team a strike mandate
