Council wanted a new juridical figure which was to be flexible in nature in order to contribute to the effective spreading of the Christian message and Christian life In this way the Church could more aptly respond to the demands of its mission in the world Most jurisdictions in the Church are territorial as in the case of a diocese where the faithful who belong to it are determined according to their territory or domicile However jurisdiction is not always linked to territory but may depend on other criteria such as employment religious rite immigrant status or agreement with the jurisdictional body in question The last mentioned applies in the case of military ordinariates and personal prelatures Personal prelatures as envisaged by the Second Vatican Council are made up of a pastor together with clergy consisting of secular priests and men and women lay faithful The prelate who may be a bishop is appointed by the Pope and governs the prelature with power of governance or jurisdiction The Church has the power of self organisation in order to pursue the aims set for her by Christ Exercising this power she has established personal prelatures within her hierarchical structure with the special feature that the faithful of the prelature continue to belong to their local church and to the diocese where they live For these and other reasons personal prelatures are clearly different from religious institutes and the consecrated life in general as well as from associations and movements of the faithful The Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church stipulates that each personal prelature must be regulated by general Church law and by its own statutes The Opus Dei Prelature Opus Dei already formed a single organism made up of laity and priests cooperating in a pastoral and apostolic task which was international in its scope This specific Christian mission consisted in spreading the ideal of holiness in the middle of the world in daily work and in the ordinary circumstances of life Pope Paul VI and his successors decided that a study should be undertaken of the possibility of giving Opus Dei a juridical form suited to its true nature In the light of the documents of the Council this form was to be that of a personal prelature In 1969 work started on this with both members of the Holy See and of Opus Dei taking part The work was completed in 1981 After this the Holy See sent a report to over 2 000 bishops of dioceses where Opus Dei already had a presence so that they could offer their observations Once this latter phase had been completed Opus Dei was established by John Paul II as a personal prelature of international scope The document effecting this was the apostolic constitution Ut sit of 28 November 1982 which was formally executed on 19 March 1983 At the same time the Pope promulgated the Statutes which constitute the particular pontifical law of the Opus Dei Prelature The

  • "The driving force for the apostolic work" - Opus Dei
an organ concert in Moscow cathedral On the way out I saw a notice about some catechism classes and that autumn I decided to go and I began the classes in December At the same time I met the people from Yantar the Opus Dei center in Moscow I started going to activities in the Center which have helped me so much in my spiritual life and in getting to know Jesus Christ more deeply I was baptized on January 10 2010 This year as well as studying for the final year of my degree I also worked in the Administration It s a job I simply love doing and through it I really understood that the Work is a family Father although I love my degree subject I ve decided to dedicate myself to the work of the Administration and nine days ago I asked for admission as a Numerary Assistant Father I m really happy but it was a hard decision to make and I think there may be other girls who haven t yet discovered how wonderful this kind of work is Can you explain to us what Administration means in Opus Dei My daughter don t forget that this applause is for you but it is for God first of all who has brought us to that beloved country Russia through St Josemaria s prayers How much he prayed for your country how much he prayed for you In union with his regard I am sure we will reach from St Petersburgh to Vladivostok doing a wonderful apostolate which will bring forth not only Numerary Assistants but Numeraries Associates and Supernumeraries lots of them because there are so many excellent people in Russia who bore witness to their faith when times were very hard I can tell you that in the beginning in 1946 when there were barely 8 or 10 women who were Numerary Assistants our Father called three of them to Rome who d only been in the Work for five or six months And seeing their sense of responsibility and how they always said yes to God through their work in the home he told them simply and sincerely When I have twelve women like you I will spread the Work throughout the world The importance of the Numerary Asssistants in the domestic Adminstrations is absolutely vital It s true that Opus Dei is a family a family in which we really love each other and we put our lives on the line to serve one another Don t imagine I m praising Opus Dei It s God I m praising Opus Dei comes from God it isn t the creation of men and women But he has given us this spirit of learning to love every day of learning to serve every day and he s given us this work in the domestic Administration which is as beautiful as the way God himself came to earth through Mary our Mother He chose
