  • Biography of Ernesto Cofiño - Opus Dei
    in 1933 and started a family that eventually would have five children He devoted himself wholeheartedly to his work as a doctor Besides looking after the physical health of his patients he tried to assist them in their personal difficulties as well His strong faith in God and deep respect for human life led him to foster and defend the right to life from conception and care for life until natural death He inspired and promoted organizations that work for the good of future mothers street children and orphans He worked in many of these organizations himself and was instrumental in financing homes for the needy and centers of social assistance and served as Director of the National Hospice Center for four years A pioneer in pediatric research in Guatemala he created the Chair of Pediatrics in the Medical Faculty of the University of San Carlos Guatemala where he was professor for twenty four years The University Medal was conferred on him in recognition of his generous dedication to teaching In 1956 Ernesto joined Opus Dei as a supernumerary member From then on he drew closer to God in prayer and penance He attended Mass and received Holy Communion daily and went to Confession weekly His devotion to our Lady grew and he became a great promoter of saying the Rosary daily His apostolic activity also intensified and he transmitted his joy and generosity to many people He urged them to help promote Christian social projects with their prayer and financial support and put many hours into those projects himself determined to make the Church s social teaching a reality He likewise deepened his study of doctrine and his religious formation He was heroic in helping organize training and educational programs for women from very poor backgrounds and other works

    a reputation for holiness is a common practice in the Catholic Church Some favors received through the intercession of Dr Ernesto follow Favors April 18 2012 print email facebook twitter ePub kindle An unknown infection My grandson was running a high temperature for six days The antibiotics given him over the last four days didn t seem to have any effect The following morning we brought him to the hospital with a high temperature diarrhea and vomiting Tests taken during the day revealed a high level of white corpuscles but could not localize the source of the infection At midday the doctor let us know he was worried That night the pediatricians decided to suspend all medications and see how he got on during the night I left my grandchild and his mother in the hospital thinking that without the help of the medicines it was gong to be a very long night for them I returned home very anxious indeed At home I felt urged to pray I thought of Dr Cofiño but I couldn t find the prayer card for him Nevertheless I started to ask him to intercede with God for us so He would enlighten the pediatricians and help my grandson to recover soon The following morning it was a completely different picture During the night he had slept well That day the temperature dropped the diarrhea and vomiting gradually stopped and his appetite returned The next day he left the hospital and quickly recovered needing no medication at all My thanks to Dr Cofiño A de F The baby we were hoping for My husband and I were asking Dr Cofiño to intercede for us so that my son s wife would get pregnant After asking for two months we received the joyful news that

  • Biography of Guadelupe Ortiz - Opus Dei
    in Madrid on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe December 12th 1916 In 1932 she finished school and started to study chemistry She received outstanding grades despite the interruption in July 1936 with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War She obtained her degree in 1941 and began to teach to help support her family In 1944 she met St Josemaria Escriva the founder of Opus Dei He helped her discover that professional work and ordinary life are where she could find Christ A little while later she asked to be admitted to Opus Dei From then on Guadalupe unconditionally gave herself to seeking intimacy with God and to assisting various apostolic activities She was involved in the domestic administration of two university residences in Madrid and in Bilbao and organizied classes of professional training for the young employees Later she took charge of a university residence for women in Madrid In 1951 seeing her generosity fortitude and cheerfulness the Founder invited her to start the apostolic work of Opus Dei with women in Mexico On March 5th she left for her new country There she directed a university residence for women encouraging the girls to deepen their human and Christian education and to put their professional knowledge at the service of others At the same time she strove to pass on her Christian faith to professional women and mothers of families In 1956 Guadalupe moved to Rome and a year later returned to Spain She was beginning to have a heart problem and had to undergo an operation After recovering she went on to obtain her doctorate with the highest qualification She won the Juan de la Cierva Prize for research work and taught science in a state technical college At the same time she also worked in
