Department of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Piura in the past this has resulted in partial and disjointed efforts Now seemed to be the moment to combine all these efforts and try to really accomplish something significant The University of Piura located in the northwest corner of Peru in the oldest Spanish town in South America was begun in 1964 under the impetus of St Josemaría Escrivá In organizing the Program for Nutritional Recuperation Dr Castillo relates the decision was made to focus attention on one of the local areas with the highest incidence of malnutrition and to seek the assistance of a number of other city and regional organizations pooling resources in a united effort Integral social development The current program financed by the Government of Navarra in Spain and ProPeru in Peru began in January 2008 and concluded in December 2010 Castillo says that from the beginning we tried to give the program a focus of integral social development The project started when a number of studies brought to light serious intellectual deficiencies in the malnourished children along with the insufficiency of the food supplements the children were receiving from PRONAA National Program of Nutritional Supplements The key to the solution was seen in teaching the families especially the mothers to provide the required nourishment on a regular basis A plan is drawn up To draw up an effective plan a thorough study of the nutritional state of all the children in the Medio Piura region under the age of five was carried out including the incidence of illnesses such as diarrhea and intestinal parasites that can aggravate malnutrition With the information this study provided a plan was drawn up based on the following six goals 1 nutritional vigilance 2 medical care for both pregnant women and children 3 overcoming intellectual deficiencies 4 maternal education 5 self sustaining food supplies 6 strengthening local community organizations The most important factor was educating the mothers in caring for personal hygiene and preventing intestinal diseases At the same time an effort was made to help the mothers prepare food stuffs at low cost but with high nutritional value The first step was to help the families raise ducks and guinea pigs and to provide other sources of nourishment in bio gardens Women the key As women were seen to be the key to the solution an effort was also made to raise the self esteem of the mothers in the program And since many of them didn t even have a National Identity Card this became the first priority Then a Basic Literacy Program was begun which a surprising percentage of the mothers decided to attend When for a certain period of time PRONNA ran into problems in providing additional food supplies those in charge of the program were worried that the children would begin to lose weight But fortunately the mothers were already well enough instructed to be able to come up with the necessary sources of nourishment on

  • "The family is Africa's greatest treasure" - Opus Dei
dramatically reduced infant mortality rates from 50 to 22 and the cases of women dying in childbirth also from 50 to 18 Its Maternity without Risks program has provided assistance to over 30 000 pregnant women in outlying rural and jungle areas totally neglected by the state Since 2008 this maternity program has been directed by the gynecologist Celine Tendobi 42 years old she is one the mainstays at Monkole Recently she was in Spain to receive the Harambee Foundation award for the Promotion of Equality among African Women In accepting the award she explained how this initiative in Kinshasha came about in the first place In 1989 the Prelate of Opus Dei Alvaro del Portillo came to visit us Seeing the dire situation of education and health care in the country and the complete lack of any assistance from the state he urged us to do what we could to help the most needy Two years later in 1991 Monkole began with only 3 beds Today it has 150 Despite all the efforts of the medical team working there each day the lack of resources is a real restraint and many more people could be helped if more financial support were available For example as Celine explains the Maternity without Risks program has only three clinics strategically spread out through the surrounding rural areas Eliba since 1996 Kimbondo since 1997 and Moluka since 2003 The ambulatory team of 4 people including a large echograph machine travels one day a week to each of the three sites Sometimes they need to carry the medical equipment themselves since there are no roads to the houses where people live And sometimes they are just in time for a new birth Once even twins she says smilingly Although resources are limited Celine says that no one doubts we are the hospital of reference and fill a very important role since the state provides nothing for health care or education and the great majority of people have no access to these basic services There are other hospitals in Kinshasha but they are all private and very expensive The hospital she works at is not for profit and its mission is much more ambitious We want to help the family continue being Africa s great treasure Here large families are the norm with 10 or 11 children despite all the poverty And the elderly are the most esteemed members of the family We can t allow something so beautiful as this to be put at risk We are a rich country says Celine with huge amounts of gold copper and coltan Geographically our territory is five times the size of Spain and has a population of 78 million But the wars here have led to unbelievable poverty Three bloody civil wars between 1994 and 2008 with over four million people killed And even now we are undergoing constant attacks from the guerillas Celine insists that given this bleak panorama the only solution is for more

  • “You’ve got to do something” - Opus Dei
ePub kindle One day back in 2009 I was on my way to my parish church dedicated to our Lady of Bethlehem in Jaén The indigent people seated on the steps who can so often be found there caught my attention in a special way that day My heart was moved by the sight of those poor people looking forlorn in the fierce Andalusian sun Several of them had their hand out asking for money In the past I had often tried to shut my eyes to that daily scene telling myself Stop being so sentimental you re only going to complicate your life But one day my heart reproached me That s enough you ve got to do something for these people I decided I had to find the funds needed to enable them to get at least one good meal a day I am an architect and life has been good to me with the daily problems any person encounters While doing my daily period of prayer in the parish church I thought about St Josemaria s life and his concern for the needy I had discovered in his biography that the founder of the Work did all he could to find positive solutions for the needs of the sick and poor in Madrid in the first years of Opus Dei So how could I be at peace if I shut my eyes to suffering people in my own city And I recalled how much good it did me when I was an architecture student back in the 60 s in Madrid to make visits to the poor accompanied by friends from Gurtubay a center of the Work I had even found time over several years to give night classes to people who had no access to school and who lived in one of Madrid s slums That very day I contacted my good friend Paco and we went to see our parish priest to suggest a possible solution We ll need a large dining room where all these hungry people can fit I told our priest Our first meal space wasn t exactly huge we only had eight square meters with four walls and a roof But it was enough to begin handing out sandwiches milk shakes and fruit to nine people But you have to give more than food You also have to give affection to the lonely Perhaps the key thing is to have patience We needed a lot of patience because so many needy people started coming that we saw we would need a much bigger kitchen and dining area We drew up a plan and left it with our parish priest When the bishop heard about it he said he wanted to visit us and see what our needs were He was very moved when he saw what we were trying to do and encouraged us to continue our efforts A few days later we received the building permit for the new dining
