could no longer enter into the fabric of our daily life But the words of Jesus affirm the opposite A man open to the presence of God discovers that God is always working and still works today We should then let him enter and let him work And so things are born which open to the future and renew mankind All this helps us to understand why Josemaría Escrivá did not consider himself founder of anything but only a person who wants to fulfill the will of God to second his action the work precisely of God In this sense the theocentrism of Escrivá in accordance with the words of Jesus means this confidence in the fact that God has not retired from the world that God is working now and we ought only to put ourselves at his disposal to be ready capable of reacting to his calling This for me is a message of greatest importance It is a message which leads to overcoming what could be considered the great temptation of our times the pretense that is that after the big bang God retired from history God s action did not stop at the moment of the big bang but continues throughout time in the world of nature and the world of man The founder of Opus Dei said I am not the one who invented anything there is Another who acts and I am only ready to serve as an instrument So the name and all the reality which we call Opus Dei is deeply bound up with the interior life of the founder He while remaining very discreet on this point makes us understand that he was in permanent dialogue in real contact with Him who created us and works through us and with us The Book of Exodus 33 11 says of Moses that God spoke with him face to face as a friend speaks with a friend I think that even if the veil of discretion hides many details from us still from some small references we can very well apply to Josemaría Escrivá this speaking as a friend speaks with a friend which opens the doors of the world so that God can become present to work and transform everything In this light one can understand even better what holiness means as well as the universal calling to holiness Knowing a little about the history of saints and understanding that in the causes of canonization there is inquiry into heroic virtue we almost inevitably have a mistaken concept of holiness It is not for me we are led to think because I do not feel capable of attaining heroic virtue It is too high a goal Holiness then becomes a thing reserved for some greats whose images we see on the altars and who are completely different from us ordinary sinners But this is a mistaken notion of holiness a wrong perception which has been corrected and this seems to me the

things Conversations with Josemaría Escrivá n 114 This teaching of his is still timely and urgent today In virtue of the Baptism that incorporates him into Christ the believer is called to establish with the Lord an uninterrupted and vital relationship He is called to be holy and to collaborate in the salvation of humanity 2 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it Gen 2 15 The Book of Genesis as we heard in the first reading reminds us that the Creator has entrusted the earth to man to till it and keep it Believers acting in the various realities of this world contribute to realize this divine universal plan Work and any other activity carried out with the help of grace is converted into a means of daily sanctification The ordinary life of a Christian who has faith Josemaría Escrivá used to say when he works or rests when he prays or sleeps at all times is a life in which God is always present Meditations March 3 1954 This supernatural vision of life unfolds an extraordinarily rich horizon of salvific perspectives because even in the only apparently monotonous flow of normal earthly events God comes close to us and we can cooperate with his plan of salvation So it is easier to understand what the Second Vatican Council affirmed there is no question then of the Christian message inhibiting men from building up the world on the contrary it is an incentive to do these very things Gaudium et spes n 34 3 To elevate the world to God and transform it from within this is the ideal the holy founder points out to you dear brothers and sisters who rejoice today to see him raised to the glory of the altars He continues to remind you of the need not to let yourselves be intimidated by a materialist culture that threatens to dissolve the genuine identity of Christ s disciples He liked to repeat forcefully that the Christian faith is opposed to conformism and interior inertia Following in his footsteps spread in society the consciousness that we are all called to holiness whatever our race class society or age In the first place struggle to be saints yourselves cultivating an evangelical style of humility and service abandonment to Providence and of constant listening to the voice of the Spirit In this way you will be the salt of the earth cf Mt 5 13 and your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven ibid 5 16 4 Those who want to serve the cause of the Gospel faithfully will certainly encounter misunderstandings and difficulties The Lord purifies and shapes all those he calls to follow him with the mysterious power of the Cross but in the Cross the new saint repeated we find light peace and joy Lux in

  • Homily of John Paul II at the beatification of Josemaría Escrivá - Opus Dei
a Daughter of Charity of Canossa The Church desires to serve and profess the whole truth about Christ She wishes to be the steward of the whole mystery of her Redeemer Although the way of the kingdom of God passes through many tribulations it ends in a sharing in glory that glory which Christ revealed to us in his resurrection The measure of that glory is given by the New Jerusalem announced by the inspired words of the Apocalypse of John Behold the dwelling of God is with men He will dwell with them and they shall be his people and God himself will be with them Rv 21 3 Behold I make all things new Rv 21 5 says the Lord of glory The path toward the definitive newness of all things passes here on earth through the new commandment that you love one another even as I have loved you Jn 13 34 That commandment was at the center of the lives of two exemplary members of the Church who today in the joy of Easter are proclaimed Blessed Born of a deeply Christian family already in adolescence Josemaria perceived God s call to a life of greater commitment A few years after his ordination to the priesthood he began his mission as founder a mission to which he would devote 47 years of loving and unfailing care for the priests and laity of what is today the Prelature of Opus Dei The spiritual and apostolic life of the new Beatus was based on knowing himself through faith to be a son of God in Christ This faith nourished his love for the Lord his evangelizing drive his constant joy even in the great trials and difficulties he had to overcome To carry the cross is to find happiness and joy he tells us in one of his Meditations to carry the cross is to identify oneself with Christ to be Christ and therefore to be a son of God With supernatural intuition Blessed Josemaria untiringly preached the universal call to holiness and the apostolate Christ calls everyone to become holy in the realities of everyday life Hence work too is a means of personal holiness and apostolate when it is lived in union with Jesus Christ for the Son of God in the incarnation has united himself in a certain way with the whole reality of man and with the whole of creation cf Dominum et vivificantem n 50 In a society in which an unbridled craving for material things turns them into idols and a cause of separation from God the new Beatus reminds us that these same realities creatures of God and of human industry if used correctly for the glory of the Creator and the service of one s brothers and sisters can be a way for men and women to meet Christ All things of the earth he taught including the earthly and temporal activity of men must be directed to God Letter

further than St Francis de Sales in many respects St Francis proclaimed sanctity for everyone but seems to have only a spirituality for lay people whereas Msgr Escrivá wants a lay spirituality Francis in other words nearly always suggests for the laity the same practical means used by religious but with suitable modifications Escrivá is more radical he goes as far as talking about materializing in a good sense the quest for holiness For him it is the material work itself which must be turned into prayer sanctity The legendary Baron Munchausen tells a fable of a monstrous hare that had a double set of legs four normal ones on his belly and four more on his back Pursued by the hounds and feeling himself about to be overtaken he flips himself over and continues running on four fresh legs For the founder Opus Dei the life of a Christian would be just as monstrous if he were to go about with a double series of activities one consisting of prayers for God the other made up of work relaxation and family life for himself No says Escrivá there is only one life and it has to be made holy en bloc That is why he speaks of a materialized spirituality Msgr Escrivá also speaks about a good and necessary anticlericalism in the sense that the lay people should not imitate the methods and roles of the priests and religious nor vice versa I think he must have got this anticlericalism from his parents and especially from his father who was a rough gentleman hard working and a convinced Christian very much in love with his wife and always with a smile on lips I remember that he was always very calm his son wrote I owe my vocation to him and for that reason I am paternalist Another stimulus to his anticlericalism probably came from his research for his doctoral thesis in canon law It was about the Cistercian abbey of nuns of Las Huelgas near Burgos The abbess there was at one and the same time a duchess a mother superior a prelate and the temporal governor of the abbey and the hospital as well as of the convents churches and dependent villages with powers and jurisdiction which were regal and quasi episcopal Here was another monster due to so many conflicting and superimposed duties These tasks heaped one on top of the other were ill suited to become as Msgr Escrivá would have them works of God Because he would ask how can any work be God s work if it is done badly in a hurry incompetently How can a bricklayer an architect a doctor or a teacher become holy if he is not also trying as best he can to be a good bricklayer a good architect a good doctor or a good teacher Gilson wrote in the same vein in 1949 They tell us that it was faith that built the medieval cathedrals Agreed
