    a donor may deduct the fair market value of the gift up to 30 percent of their adjusted gross income with a five year carryover for any excess Most important the capital gain from the donated asset passes tax free to OCF Planned Giving When you include OCF in your estate plan you make a charitable gift enjoy tax benefits and preserve economic security for yourself and your family You are also eligible for membership in The Oregon Society Learn more about planned giving Private Foundation The board of a private foundation may transfer its assets to OCF to establish a donor advised fund or supporting organization The private foundation may retain its name and philanthropic goals with no tax or penalty on the transfer Other Gift Types Additional gifts could include stock in privately held companies limited partnerships and company stock options with the exclusion of employee stock options Personal property and other assets may also be excellent contributions For more information on gifts please read Cash or Stock Make an Educated Donation Decision Meet Our Donors Our donors are as varied as our landscape Take a minute to read a few of their stories How to Add to Your Fund You can make additions to your fund at any time using cash securities or other forms of property Checks should be made payable to The Oregon Community Foundation and mailed to our Portland office Please include the fund name on your check Gifts of appreciated securities or real estate often allow a donor to make a substantial contribution while receiving valuable income tax advantages The capital gain from the donated asset if held by you for at least one year passes tax free to OCF Gifts of real estate require a certain amount of due diligence by OCF and will require the donor to obtain a qualified appraisal Under current tax law donors can make a gift of an IRA distribution to their OCF fund with the exception of advised funds OCF staff will work with your IRA administrator if necessary to facilitate the transfer of IRA assets In addition to outright contributions you can add gifts from bequests living trusts and charitable remainder trusts to your existing fund For more information please see Cash or Stock Make an Educated Donation Decision Staff Assistance For gifts of cash securities or IRA distributions please contact Chi Nguyen fund services accounting specialist or 503 227 6846 For all other gifts please get in touch with your fund s staff contact or an OCF charitable gift planner for assistance Donor FAQs What is a community foundation A community foundation is a tax exempt nonprofit composed primarily of permanent funds established by many separate donors for the long term benefit of the residents of a defined geographic area As a statewide community foundation OCF is governed by a volunteer board of directors We administer more than 1 700 permanent charitable funds on behalf of individuals families businesses and organizations who wish to

    schools Chalkboard is helping to create an informed and engaged public that understands and addresses the tough choices and tradeoffs required to build strong schools Advised Fund Resources The following resources can help fund advisors to maximize the effectiveness of their donations Advised Fund Handbook The Advised Fund Handbook summarizes OCF s Advised Fund Program including the grantmaking process and frequently asked questions This useful tool will aid you in making grants from your fund and learning more about the services OCF offers As always OCF staff members are available to answer your questions If you prefer to receive a printed copy of the handbook please contact Fund Information Packets Twice a year fund advisors receive an informational fund packet that coincides with OCF s spring and fall requests for grant recommendations This packet provides the latest information about fund balances the amount available for grants recent grants from your fund updates on the donor advised funds program and a grant recommendation form In addition to basic fund information you can request grant suggestions based on your charitable interests Please contact us if you d like to receive grant suggestions with your fund packet Grant Review and Approval All grant recommendations come before the Foundation s board of directors for review and approval Following approval checks and grant award letters are mailed to recipient organizations The award letter includes information on the grant s purpose as well as the fund s contact name and address information This allows the recipient organization to thank you personally Alternatively fund advisors may remain anonymous All fund advisors receive confirmation from OCF that grant recommendations were approved Grantmaking Calendar The OCF fiscal year begins on January 1 and ends on December 31 Key periods for donor advised fund grants include March and September The semiannual fund packet is sent to advisors May The OCF board reviews and approves March and April grant applications November The OCF board reviews and approves September and October grant applications In special circumstances grants may be recommended each month OCF does not contact advisors prior to those dates Research Reports As part of our support to donors and charitable giving in Oregon the Foundation commissions research and publications on issues that affect our communities The goal of this research is to foster constructive dialogue and build consensus Past reports include studies on children and families education and livability through civic engagement Although OCF supports these projects we do not necessarily endorse specific positions taken in the publications As a donor you might be interested in these publications which are available here Adding to Your Advised Fund You may add to your advised fund at any time OCF accepts gifts in many forms cash check stock transfer wire transfer and online When adding to your fund via check simply make it out to The Oregon Community Foundation and mail it to our Portland office with a note indicating that it is an addition to your advised fund We will mail

    Oregon students to get the education they need If you choose to start a scholarship fund you will be in good company OCF s scholarship program grows dramatically each year with awards now totaling about 8 million per year Overview Adding to Your Scholarship Fund Staff Assistance Overview In the 2014 2015 academic year the OCF scholarship program Comprised 439 funds with more than 100 million in assets each of which was set up by an individual family organization or business Awarded approximately 8 million in scholarships to more than 3 300 Oregon students The amount given out in OCF scholarships has tripled over the last four years but the need has increased as well Tuition is increasing across the board for Oregon s four year public universities Many students graduate with debt exceeding 20 000 For low income Oregon students the net cost of attending college represents about half of their annual family income To learn more about the work OCF is doing in the area of education please visit our education page Adding to Your Scholarship Fund Some donors add to the corpus of their scholarship fund each year Others augment the amount available to be spent in the current year Some do both If you are interested in adding to your fund please send a cover letter with your contribution detailing how you would like the Foundation to allocate your funds You can also use our scholarship funding template to inform us of your wishes If you have questions about how to add to your scholarship fund please contact Jessica Steinhebel scholarship program coodinator jsteinhebel oregoncf org or 503 227 6846 Staff Assistance If you are interested in setting up a new scholarship fund please contact an OCF charitable gift planner in your area Contact an OCF
