    his contribution of inflammatory factors during the mobilization of body tissue in the transition cow In the 1980s Dr Bertoni was one of the pioneers in this area of research Today also his earlier efforts and findings are internationally recognized Prof Bertoni s research is also closely linked to the production of excellent food products from dairy animals in Italy Thus he conducted significant studies related to the production of buffalo mozzarella and Parmesan cheese Over the years Dr Bertoni has attended most of the important international congresses In addition he has organized national and international congresses He is famous for his characteristic way of presentation and for contributing to discussions His sophisticated questions and comments utilizing his personal and characteristic English is renowned His personal warmth and capacity to interact with fellow scientists is commendable and is a model for all animal scientists Giuseppe Bertoni is a member of many national and international scientific associations Just to mention a few examples he is vice president of the Italian Association of Animal Science ASPA a member of the auditing group of the EAAP of the Health Ministry Technical Commission for Feed Manufacturers of the Ministry of Environment Commission for the evaluation of GMO risks and of the Technical and Scientific Committee for the agricultural policy of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry The laudatio of Alessandro Nardone was presented by Jim Flanagan I first met Professor Alessandro Nardone at meetings of the ICRPMA I had my first serious conversation with him in Dublin in the company of Paddy Cunningham He was on an English language course in Trinity College Dublin in preparation for his upcoming Presidency of EAAP This thorough preparation typified the approach of Alessandro to all his work Alessandro has a Master degree from the Centre International Hautes Etudes Agronomiques Mediterraneennes in France He received a PhD in Animal Demography in 1970 He was head of the R D Office in AIA 1964 1970 Director General of AIA 1971 1986 Lecturer in Animal Demography at the University of Napoli 1970 1984 and Full Professor at the University of Tuscany Viterbo 1986 2010 in Animal Breeding and Genetics Biotechnology and Livestock Systems He was Director of the Department of Animal Production in Viterbo 2003 2008 Alessandro is author of more than 230 scientific papers He has had many research roles in Italy including Chairman of the Scientific Committee of INNOVAGEN Vice President of the research consortium CRSA He was General Coordinator of SelMol animal selection by molecular genetics of CLIMANIMAL Analysis of climatic effect on farm animals and of COFIN Study of animal germplasm in hot climates and international surveys on Mediterranean Cattle and Buffalo production systems He was responsible for several research units at the National Research Council He was President of the National Experimental lnstitute for Plant Nutrition Internationally Alessandro was Chairman of the Working Groups of International Experts at FAO on Maintenance of Domestic Animal Genetic Diversity and on Biotechnology for the Conservation of Genetic Resources
