    http dx doi org 10 4081 ijas 2015 3624 Elena Angón Departamento de Producción Animal University of Cordoba Spain eangon uco es José Perea Departamento de Producción Animal University of Cordoba Spain Paula Toro Mújica Facultad de Agronomía e Ingeniería Forestal Pontifical Catholic University of Chile Santiago Chile José Rivas Departamento de Producción Animal Central University of Venezuela Maracay Venezuela Bolivarian Republic of Carmen de Pablos Department of Business Economics Rey Juan Carlos University Madrid Spain Antón García Departamento de Producción Animal University of Cordoba Spain Abstract Over the last decade pastoral systems have been intensified in response to an increasing demand for meat and milk by generating environmental and social problems due to its high dependence on external inputs The objective of this research was to analyze the economic feasibility of dairy pastoral system in La Pampa Argentina The main successful factors were identified through technical efficiency analysis and subsequently improvement actions were suggested The technique data envelopment analysis creates efficiency indexes by comparing the performance of each farm with the best practice which defines the production frontier The farms were classified attending to two criteria first the level of efficiency second the regular use of supplementation feed The results showed that about 40 of the farms were efficient and the efficiency rate of the farms without supplementary feed was 80 A 70 of the farms uses their own grassland resources adjusting milk yield to the capacity of the pasture The technical efficiency for this group is 14 higher than the rest Inefficient farms can adopt different strategies to enhance by practicing benchmarking One of the examples studied shows two ways to do it on the one hand the extensification by producing at a minimum cost on the other hand the technification linked to the increase of stocking rate

    Leitner Yaniv Lavon DOI http dx doi org 10 4081 ijas 2015 4125 David Wolfenson Department of Animal Sciences The Hebrew University Rehovot Israel david wolfenson mail huji ac il Gabriel Leitner Mastitis Laboratory of the Veterinary Institute Ministry of Agriculture Bet Dagan Israel Yaniv Lavon Israel Cattle Breeders Association Caesarea Israel Abstract Mastitis intramammary infection causes the deterioration of ovarian follicular responses in cows resulting in low fertility The shortterm acute clinical form of mastitis has a time dependent disruptive effect on conception rate It effectively lowers conception rate if events occur mainly 10 days before to 30 days after artificial insemination Long term subclinical mastitis is widely spread in commercial herds Although it is less severe than clinical mastitis its long term nature causes a more pronounced decrease in conception rate Even mild elevation of somatic cell count in subclinical cows significantly lowers conception rate Disrupted follicular responses include depression of steroid production in the preovulatory follicle associated with low and delayed preovulatory luteinizing hormone surge resulting in delayed ovulation in onethird of subclinical cows Mastitis clinical and subclinical also impairs oocyte competence reflected in low production of blastocysts The corpus luteum seems to be insensitive to mastitis

    4 2015 Villalobos Cortés A preliminary study of solute carrier family gene in adapted bovine breeds of Panama Áxel Villalobos Cortés Rita González Herrera DOI http dx doi org 10 4081 ijas 2015 4057 Áxel Villalobos Cortés Laboratorio Agrobiotecnología Instituto de Investigación Agropecuaria de Panamá Herrera Panama villalobos axel gmail com Rita González Herrera Laboratorio Agrobiotecnología Instituto de Investigación Agropecuaria de Panamá Herrera Panama Abstract SLC11A1 the solute carrier family gene formerly known as bovine natural resistanceassociated macrophage protein NRAMP has the polymorphism of the associated microsatellites located in its 3 untranslated region UTR SLC11A1 has been associated with susceptibility or resistance to several intracellular pathogens In Panama several genetic characterization studies have been performed on the Guaymí GY and Guabalá GUA Creole breeds Given that these breeds adapted to the local environment over a long period there is an extremely high probability that an examination of the SLC11A1 gene could reveal alleles of this gene that confer resistance to disease Therefore the aim of this study was to identify the associated microsatellites located in its 3 UTR of the SLC11A1 gene in bovine breeds locally adapted to Panama Four locally adapted bovine breeds were studied In total 35 of the amplified samples were sequenced revealing new polymorphisms such as GT 3 GT 4 and GT 5 in GT regions The most common repeats among the evaluated populations were GT 11 GT 6 and GT 4 which were found in 34 3 20 0 and 11 4 of samples respectively Moreover the GT 13 repeat which is associated with natural resistance against brucellosis was found in the GUA breed In addition based on the numbers of GT repeats found in the sequenced samples the GUA breed exhibited the greatest number of polymorphisms among the examined breeds Keywords Genetics Bovine Local
