    Staff Employment Campus Tours Forms Downloads Beyond Crime and Punishment conference arrives this spring We rose to the challenge At last year s conference with Michelle Alexander on Ending Mass Incarceration and the New Jim Crow participants called for re visioning a future without mass incarceration and without state racialized control over people of color As we continue our efforts to dismantle the structures and ideology around mass incarceration how do we establish and nurture healing alternatives to the judge and punish paradigm which has been so destructive of black and brown people s lives From March 10 13 2016 Pendle Hill will host a restorative transformative justice conference Beyond Crime and Punishment Fostering Transformative Justice in Our Communities Our goal is to increase experience in and appreciation for restorative practices so that we can better advocate using them in our schools communities workplaces and as alternatives to our punitive system Similarly we will look at how such restorative models as truth and reconciliation processes have fared in helping communities heal long festering racial wounds through truth telling acknowledgment and repair Through speakers panels workshops and experiential circles we hope to inspire educate create opportunities for networking and galvanize for ongoing community action Kay Pranis Dr Joy DeGruy Rev Nelson Joyce Hobson Johnson and Lorraine Stutzman Amstutz are only some of the many teachers and practitioners of restorative justice to help us achieve those goals For more information click on the link above or contact John Meyer at 610 566 4507 ext 129 Browse Articles E newsletters Media News Pendle Hill Rewind Quaker History Recipes View All Share Most of our wonderful lectures and presentations are streamed live over the Internet We also record them for those who are unable to watch the live session To view upcoming live stream

    we transmit Quaker values from one generation to the next As a Quaker historian and a parent of three adult graduates of Friends schools Emma Lapsansky Werner has been fascinated by this question professionally and personally Quaker family life and Quaker community have long been the interdependent and mutually supporting essentials for sustaining and transmitting the values of our radical and egalitarian faith tradition In this talk Emma invites us to probe this question through the lens of the correspondence of one 19th century network of European American Quaker families and through the life and letters of 20th century African American Quaker Bayard Rustin Please join us for an exploration of evidence early and modern of Quakers efforts to model for young people the essential value of a true Godliness which aims to help them live better in the world and excites their endeavors to mend it Emma Lapsansky Werner is Emeritus Professor of History and Curator of the Quaker Collection at Haverford College where she continues to teach Quaker history and consult with students and scholars visiting the Quaker Collection Her research interests include Quaker history African American history and especially the intersection of the two Among her recent books are Quaker Aesthetics with Anne Verplanck and Back to Africa Benjamin Coates and the American Colonization Movement with Margaret Hope Bacon She is a contributing author to The Oxford Handbook of Quaker Studies and to Quakers and Abolition Emma is a member of Lansdowne Friends Meeting PA The Stephen G Cary Memorial Lecture was endowed by Norval and Ann Reece and established in 2004 in concert with Pendle Hill s publication of Steve Cary s memoir The Intrepid Quaker One Man s Quest for Peace Travel directions to Pendle Hill Click to view the flyer Click to read Emma

    Middle East What successes and advances have we witnessed over the past decade While the case of Queer Palestine will serve as one case study this lecture s themes will also address the broader regional context Leader s Sa ed Atshan is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Swarthmore College He previously served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in International Studies at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University He holds a PhD 2013 and an MA 2010 in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University He also received an MPP 2008 from the Harvard Kennedy School and a BA 2006 from Swarthmore College Sa ed is a Quaker from Palestine He graduated from Ramallah Friends School in 2002 and currently attends Central Philadelphia Friends Meeting Sa ed has served as a Lecturer in Peace and Justice Studies for more than five years at Tufts University and he has earned four distinction in teaching and several advising and mentoring prizes from Harvard for his work as a head teaching fellow and resident tutor there He has been awarded multiple graduate fellowships including from the National Science Foundation Social Science Research Council Woodrow Wilson National Foundation Andrew Mellon Foundation and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Sa ed is also the recipient of a Soros Fellowship and a Kathryn Davis Fellowship for Peace He has worked for the American Civil Liberties Union the UN High Commission on Refugees Human Rights Watch Seeds of Peace the Palestinian Negotiations Affairs Department and the Government of Dubai Atshan is also a member of Al Qaws an organization promoting LGBTQ Palestinian rights Travel directions to Pendle Hill Click to view the flyer Learn Education Overview Radical Faithfulness Program Beyond Crime and Punishment Continuing Revolution Integrity Workshops Events Arts Spirituality Pamphlets
