For example consider Wild with All Regret which features a celebrated Roman sculpture guised partially as a Classical mythological hero and partially as a Judeo Christian entity placed in a New World exotic landscape to convey my impressions from a Victorian poem May you see here something you find lovely also August Above Below the Surface by Will Wolf Wolf Artist Statement In my current body of work formal and conceptual concerns of space drives my images The two categories that I am most concerned with are personal and formal space I identify personal space as areas remembered locations of my surfaces and memories Then I intersect those with the actual surface or the picture plane I manipulate these surfaces and create a fracture by disrupting the surface with color and shape Meanwhile I am also adding and subtracting elements from above and below the surface The colorist and action painters of the New York School such as Mark Rothko and Clyfford have had the greatest influence on my work I relate to their improvisational intuitive processes of painting and creating space through color I have adopted these ideas into my own work I have also studied and been influenced by contemporary painters such as Mark Bradford and Julie Mehretu Their ability to layer elements and map out space is a great inspiration for my current body of work These contemporary painters also influence me through their use of color line and shape which not only creates and maps out space but actually suggest a location I am very interested in exploring this concept in my own work My paintings not only become a meeting ground for the sensuous exploration of space developed by post war artist but also the geographies and mapping vocabularies more contemporary artist provided I develop my formal and conceptual concerns in various ways I use specific colors and shapes to create the illusion of space while experimenting with layering textures to assist in the process of creating an actual physical space I also achieve a tactile surface by either reductively tearing or ripping the surface or additively by hammering wood or stapling fabric to the surface The supports that I work on are important to my paintings because it aids in creating a context for the painting I primarily work on wallpaper because it offers unique textures and provides me with a rigidness and resistance on which I build space Furthermore I use the history of my mark making to show how the space I created has changed over time I plan to continue my explorations through the process of construction and deconstruction July Sally Ritter Ritter Artist Statement The process is the most important Discovery of shapes and colors and their interaction are intriguing to me whether working abstractly or realistically Currently I am enjoying returning to drawing and find excitement in the relationships between form line and color within a realism format with the intent that these discoveries will influence my more abstract
