  • "Public satisfaction with the NHS is rising, but will care experiences follow suit?" - Picker Institute Europe
to new analysis of the British Social Attitudes survey published today by the King s Fund But despite recent improvements results have still not returned to the historic high point set in 2010 On the face of it today s results suggest strong NHS performance in spite of well documented financial pressures and high demand It is important to note though the survey asks about public satisfaction rather than the specific experiences of recent users of healthcare services It is likely that public support for the NHS is a contributing factor to the reported levels of satisfaction as the King s Fund have suggested respondents may have wished to give a vote of support for the NHS as an institution in difficult times www kingsfund org uk projects bsa survey 2014 conclusion Tellingly the majority of the improvement in results from 2013 to 2014 is attributable to people who have not used services recently Although there are improvements recent patients they are much smaller in the order of three percentage points compared to 10 12 points for those who have no first hand experience of services There are also more challenging findings in the longer term trends Overall satisfaction with the NHS has improved five points from 2013 the proportion who were quite or very satisfied has risen from 60 to 65 but remains five points behind the 2010 position when satisfaction was at an all time high 70 quite or very satisfied In that context this year s improvement looks like a partial recovery after a marked drop in satisfaction in 2011 coinciding with a change of government and the passage of the controversial Health and Social Care Act An alternative reading is that satisfaction which had improved sizably every year since 2004 has stalled over the last five years This might be understandable in a time of austerity indeed given the financial pressures on the service it s commendable that satisfaction does remain high But with an election less than 100 days away we can be sure that major parties will be carefully scrutinising these trends There are some more worrying results too particularly around primary care satisfaction with both GP and dental services have fallen by three points in the last year The importance of the NHS as an electoral issue cannot be overstated Regular polling from Ipsos MORI https www ipsos mori com researchpublications researcharchive 2905 Issues Index 2007 onwards aspx view wide quoted by the King s Fund shows the proportion of people rating the NHS as one of the most importance issues facing Britain today increasing by a half from 22 in May 2010 to 33 in December 2014 Even more strikingly recent polling by ComRes for ITV showed a dramatic jump in the proportion rating the NHS as one of the top three election issues leaping 11 points from 39 in December 2014 to 50 in January 2015 overtaking immigration as the top ranking issue And as today s results show voters from

  • There is nothing more powerful or effective than feedback from a patient - Picker Institute Europe
give my argument the weight and make the difference Particularly for subjects like dignity in care when you share a story of someone in Didcot routinely sitting on the toilet while their carer attends to another patient or a lady in Banbury who has told me her husband is regularly left standing naked for 20 minutes while his carer takes a phone call in the middle of bathing him There was also a gentleman with a physical disability of working age who has his bedtime dictated to him by his carers only being available to put him to bed at 9pm every night Personal accounts and stories are at the heart of what we do and are the greatest weapon against poor care and can and will engineer change That s why getting the patient voice into policy making is so important Also I think it doesn t matter what sector you work it it is when the boss hears the real voices of key staff and customers that you get the really powerful change Healthcare is no different How do you keep the general public aware of project developments and keep them involved in the care quality conversation We aim to do as much as of our work as possible in the public domain so it is accessible at all times from hosting content and updates on our website to copying the media in We also follow up each individual letter with regular reports through both the Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee and The Health and Wellboard Board at the County Council ensuring that as well as our own files there is also a matter of public record documenting what we have said to people and what they have said back to us What standout achievements have you made using this process in the last year A substantial amount actually We enabled local university students to talk to each other about access to primary healthcare A E and mental health services The two projects conducted with those particular students eventually led to the South Central Ambulance Service providing a paramedic staff vehicle on Friday and Saturday nights The local Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee received a report that showed since the launch of this service it has reduced A E attendances by an estimate of 40 50 young people every weekend Also on the back of a series of events called Hearsay we listened to adult users of social care Essentially service users said to us we don t think the quality element of care contracts is good enough and we shared that information The County Council has now put new customer standards designed with input from service users into all of its contracts with major providers It s not as complicated as the system makes it out to be sometimes You can learn a lot from listening to your patients Highlights from the year so far Increasingly we get calls for help both from individuals and small voluntary

  • Recommending a Friends and Family Test (FFT) for Children and Young People - Picker Institute Europe
after completing the following stages Focus Group Question Development Ward Interviews Cognitive Testing Pilot A focus group with young patients at the Royal London Hospital explored views of the FFT question and different ways it could be asked This informed the development of four versions of the FFT question with views on the wording and presentation styles sought during subsequent ward interviews The preferred version was developed into a full survey form before being cognitively tested with a new set of patients to check for comprehension and overall format A pilot of the data collection phase was conducted across two NHS Trust sites What we found After accounting for children s views on question text response options and pictures images the recommended FFT question for children and young people based on their preferences was as follows The Monkey character and Monkey brand designs are trademarks of AhHa Publications Limited Copyright AhHa Publications Limited 2015 www monkeywellbeing com The question was incorporated onto a survey form which included freetext follow up questions and piloted across six paediatric inpatient and day case wards using a hand out paper methodology with an additional online option A total of 672 completed forms were returned during the six week fieldwork period The majority of respondents agreed either a lot 90 n 600 or a bit 8 n 51 that the hospital was a good place for their friends and family Approximately two thirds of respondents left freetext comments To summarise It is essential to involve young patients in the development and design of any new data collection method to ensure it is appropriate and appeals to their needs abilities and preferences Our pilot data collection found that the vast majority of children gave positive responses to the closed question element of the FFT A majority
