  • Values Based Interviewing, a key piece in the NHS staffing puzzle? - Picker Institute Europe
    and being involved in care decisions are all vital components of this Whilst competencies such as communication skills go some way to understanding potential here the effective and consistent delivery of the relational aspects of high quality care are more closely linked to an individual s values The way they go about their work the way they interact with and perceive those in their care and the way they interact with and perceive their colleagues are all important considerations However the widely used system of competency based recruitment often fails to uncover the values that drive these behaviours and therefore does not provide as full a picture of potential as is possible An alternative to competency based recruitment is values based recruitment VBR A values based interview VBI is designed to align a potential employee to an employer with a focus on common values motives and attitudes In January 2013 the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust OUH and the Picker Institute staff survey team carried out an assessment of using values based interviewing in the trust to recruit new staff members The aim of the value based interviewing VBI approach is to recruit people into the Oxford University Hospitals who share the organisation s values ensuring that they are dedicated to Delivering Compassionate Excellence an approach where they deliver the type of care they would like to receive for themselves or a member of their family 1 When staff who reported that they had a values based interview were asked to provide feedback on their experiences via a Welcome questionnaire they were more positive about their experience on every question than those who did not Staff reported more positively in areas such as ratings of managers and colleagues prospects of career advancement how their roles contribute to organisational success and their ability to deliver compassionate excellence Managers of staff recruited through the VBI process reported that staff were highly likely to treat people with dignity and respect fit in with the team and organisational culture and role model the values of Oxford University Hospitals Intended length of stay for those employees recruited using VBI was also much higher over two and a half years longer than those recruited through the traditional process With the benefits in increased retention being well documented the overall positive impact of VBI could be huge Health and Wellbeing of NHS Staff A Benefit Evaluation Model 2 These results are significant as despite using different methods of recruitment staff recruited using a values based interview were not treated differently to those recruited using competency based interviews Their patterns of experience were the same it was only the reported positivity of those same experiences that varied By aligning individual and organisational values at the recruitment stage and better understanding the behaviours associated with them health and social care organisations are more likely to maintain a more engaged and committed workforce But perhaps more importantly these staff will possess the attitude and behaviours needed to deliver high quality

    healthcare terms leads to missed appointments and lack of concordance In these instances people felt they would be categorised in the they don t care box but really in many cases it s the exact opposite They care so much that they are scared to respond and do not feel comfortable to question what they have been told for fear of repercussions The issue isn t them it is the fact that they have not been communicated with effectively I often get the feeling there is a prevailing assumption that there is only one way to communicate and if those skills don t come to you naturally there is something wrong with you But actually there are many ways to communicate and interact with people you just have to make the time and have the perspective to accept and try them Although not a maternity service I have been so impressed by Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust and their collaborative Always Events programme approach to working with service users with learning disabilities to improve care pathways and experiences for people Listening to people really goes a long way and benefits everyone Things that make a big difference without excessive budget or commitment include Use of large fonts Easy to read letters including photographs help people to identify and form relationships Simple accessible language that is easy to understand Best Beginnings and their Baby Buddy app are another great tool to draw from Offering help and support to mothers by providing information in digestible bitesize chunks using simple and clear language that someone with a reading age of 11 can understand Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 Next Tags learning disabilities maternity parents patient experience Person centred care See Also Parents views of neonatal care
