  • The Carle Receives Grant To Restore Weisgard Illustrations | Carle Museum

  • The Museum Mourns The Loss of Co-Founder Barbara Carle | Carle Museum
    branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art when a friend introduced her to Eric Carle a young illustrator and writer of books for children including The Very Hungry Caterpillar In 1973 Eric and Barbara married and moved to Western Massachusetts There Barbara earned her M Ed from the University of Massachusetts in special education Soon after she co founded Side by Side an innovative preschool that integrated special needs children into regular classrooms For many years Eric and Bobbie made their home in Northampton where his studio was and spent summers in nearby Hawley They enjoyed many friendships in both communities Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the Carles traveled several times to Japan and were inspired by the beautiful picture book museums there They were also struck that there were no picture book museums in the United States Together they dedicated themselves to founding The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art It opened on Barbara s birthday in 2002 In an interview about the founding of the Museum Eric Carle said When I began to do well Bobbie was the one who said We have to give back To date The Carle has served more than 600 000 guests and sends exhibitions of picture book art to museums around the world Bobbie was such a genuine person a kind strong and warm hearted woman of tremendous grace and generosity said the Museum s current board chair Christopher B Milne Throughout her life art and books and the welfare of children were her sustaining passions She believed that picture books could enrich children s lives that they could transform us She and Eric were determined to create a museum where generations of families could gather together and feel nurtured From day one Bobbie was a force behind The Carle She was the Museum s first board chair and her leadership set the stage for all of us We will miss her so much Eric and Barbara Carle retired in 2004 spending their time in the mountains of North Carolina and the Florida Keys Barbara will be remembered by her many friends for her joy for life her warmth charm and compassion and her remarkable generosity Barbara leaves behind her devoted husband Eric her sister Rita M Wiseman her brother in law Richard McDonald her stepson Rolf Carle and his wife Teresa Toro and her stepdaughter Cirsten Carle She also leaves behind her nephew Keith Wiseman Jr and nieces Kate Wiseman and partner Robbie Dunn and Lynne Wiseman and partner Nicole Blankenbeckler Barbara was preceded in death by her sister Patricia Morrison McDonald and her brothers Thomas Nolan Morrison and James Rudy Morrison Jr There will be a private funeral service Online condolences may be shared with the Carle family at rememberingbarbaracarle carlemuseum org In lieu of flowers gifts in Barbara s memory can be directed to a favorite charity Austin Barnes Funeral Home and Crematory Boone North Carolina is serving the Carle family ABOUT THE MUSEUM The mission of The

  • The Art of Fred Marcellino press release | Carle Museum
    portfolio of commercial looking originals none of them published and started bringing it around Little by little I began to get hired An art director in the recording industry saw Marcellino s portfolio and commissioned an album cover leading to more assignments in which he brought a fresh perspective to standard layouts In 1975 Marcellino shifted professional gears to work in the publishing industry with equal success Here again he reacted against the norm insisting that he be allowed to read a book prior to designing its cover In so doing Marcellino brought a more substantive interpretation of the story buoyed by an equally appropriate typography Marcellino received critical acclaim for his unique illustrations that captured reader s imaginations For over ten years he was the pre eminent book jacket designer in America Some of his most famous covers include Birdy by William Wharton Bonfire of the Vanities by Tom Wolfe The Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Atwood and The Accidental Tourist by Ann Tyler It didn t take long for Marcellino to gravitate toward illustrating picture books His maiden effort Puss in Boots 1990 celebrates its 25th anniversary this year and augured well for the artist since it won a Caldecott Honor Taking Charles Perrault s classic story as a point of departure Marcellino employed colored pencil to create exquisitely detailed and atmospheric scenes of the French court and countryside From there Marcellino illustrated and re interpreted a number of tales including Hans Christian Andersen s The Steadfast Tin Soldier 1992 E B White s The Trumpet of the Swan 2000 and the Grimm Brother s The Devil s Three Golden Hairs renamed Ouch 1998 Marcellino s children s book drawings are rich in texture and narrative detail A consummate draftsman he employed colored pencil and watercolor to sensitively portray characters and settings often creating unique perspectives and historically accurate locales He displayed a vivid sense of detail and unerring ability to infuse his books with humor whether gentle or raucous Marcellino s final book I Crocodile 1999 which he both wrote and illustrated shows him hitting his stride with words and pictures Marcellino envisioned a sequel Arriverderci Crocodile but tragically lost his battle with cancer in 2001 before he could finish the book His sketches for Arriverderci Crocodile will be featured in the exhibition The Carle is thrilled to bring this important work beloved by so many to Amherst says H Nichols B Clark the Carle s curator emeritus and organizer of the exhibition Fred was so versatile and thoughtful and wickedly funny His love of the Venetian Renaissance artists Giorgione Bellini and Titian comes through in the exquisite compositions and glow of his art His ability to capture just the right expression for his characters provides a broad range of human emotion from the profound to the laugh out loud The 44 page book The Art of Fred Marcellino by Nicholas Falletta is available in The Carle Book Shop EXHIBITION RELATED PROGRAMMING Creative Book Covers July 10

    Saturdays 11 00 am 4 00 pm June 6 27 2015 This course provides a rare opportunity to examine the entire body of Eric Carle s work as a fine artist with particular emphasis on his ground breaking work as a picturebook artist The course will develop critical writing about picturebooks through a contextualized study of Eric Carle s work as well as corollary readings of literary art and historical materials The course will explore the artist s evolution style influences achievement medium and aesthetics Students will complete studio work and final projects grounded in their professional interests In addition the course will seek to understand Carle s legacy as the founder of the first museum devoted to picturebook art Instructor H Nichols B Clark Curator Emeritus The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art Part of what makes these courses so special is that both The Carle and Simmons understand the importance of children s books says Cathryn Mercier Director of The Center for the Study of Children s Literature CSCL Those enrolled in the program include students with a wide range of life experiences teachers librarians and writers along with those who have no professional experience in the field but a great passion for the topic To learn more about these programs visit the Simmons website email gsa simmons edu or register for an Information Session at The Carle The next information session will be held at The Carle on Saturday April 25 10 00 11 30 am About the Simmons Graduate Programs in Children s Literature The satellite program begun in the fall of 2008 includes four different tracks for students an M F A in Children s Writing an M A in Children s Literature a dual M F A in Writing for Children M A in Children s Literature degree and a dual M A in Children s Literature M S in Library Science in collaboration with the Library Science program at Mount Holyoke in South Hadley This partnership builds upon The Center for the Study of Children s Literature CSCL at Simmons College which opened in 1977 with funding from The National Endowment for the Humanities Simmons College administers the nation s first Master of Arts in Children s Literature as well as a Master of Fine Arts M F A in Writing for Children The programs provide a rigorous disciplined study of children s books for those who are or who intend to be involved in teaching library services publishing writing or related fields To develop a critical vocabulary essential for appraising text and illustration students apply a high level of scholarly analysis to children s literature ranging from folklore and mythology to contemporary realistic fiction and nonfiction With an emphasis on historical and critical analysis including feminist ideological and multicultural perspectives the interdisciplinary curriculum draws upon art history education sociology psychology and media studies About The Museum The mission of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art a non profit organization
