    Leadership Press Press Releases Work at The Carle Internship Program Job Listing Facility Rental Info Request Contact Us Donation Request Shop Customer Care Contact Us Returns Blogs Picture Books Making Art History Eric Carle and his late wife Barbara Carle founded the Museum in November 2002 Eric Carle is the renowned author and illustrator of more than 70 books including the 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar In the early 1980s the Carles traveled to Japan where they visited several picture book museums Inspired they decided to create a museum in the United States that would also honor picture books as works of art and for their educational value Residents of Western Massachusetts the Carles chose a piece of land beside the Hampshire College campus in Amherst for the museum site The architectural firm Juster Pope and Frazier designed the building which is 40 000 square feet Friends and supporters of children s books joined the Carles in funding construction The Carle houses more than 13 000 objects including 6 600 permanent collection illustrations three art galleries an art studio a theater picture book and scholarly libraries and provides programs for families scholars educators and schoolchildren Educational offerings include professional training for educators around the country Since its opening on November 22 2002 the Museum has welcomed more than 600 000 visitors including more than 30 000 school children mounted more than 80 exhibitions and held more than 100 workshops for educators I hope it will be a place to continue to thrive and grow to be a place where the art of the picture book will be enjoyed and studied by visitors for many years to come We hope the Museum will continue to be a place of learning for visitors and educators art teachers and students a cultural

    toured while on trips to Japan the Carles set out to create a museum in the United States that would celebrate picture books and picture book illustration from around the world They chose Western Massachusetts their home for many years Eric Carle is the acclaimed creator of picture books for very young children He has illustrated more than 70 books and sold more than 110 million copies His best known work The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been translated into more than 50 languages and sold more than 33 million copies since it was first published in 1969 Eric Carle was born in 1929 in Syracuse New York the son of German immigrants His parents moved the family back to Germany when Eric was only six years old He graduated from the prestigious art school the Akademie der bildenden Künste in Stuttgart Eric returned to America in 1952 and landed his first job in New York as a graphic designer in the promotion department of The New York Times Later he became the art director of an advertising agency Educator and author Bill Martin Jr asked Carle to illustrate a story he had written Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See Taken with children s book illustration Carle went on to create his own book 1 2 3 to the Zoo followed by The Very Hungry Caterpillar Eric Carle s original art is regularly on view at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and on tour at museums around the world His collage is instantly recognizable created from hand painted papers which he cuts and layers to form boldly colored images This technique has become a favorite activity in classrooms everywhere and is regularly offered as an activity in The Carle s Art Studio Eric Carle and Barbara

    more limited bus service is available Volunteer Opportunities Volunteers provide many skills and services often working directly with the public in our Art Studio or Reading Library If you are interested in volunteering at The Carle please email the Director of Education Courtney Waring Our seasons of most need tend to be May August December and school vacation weeks Volunteer positions at The Carle are guest service centered We look for team members who are friendly outgoing and comfortable speaking with guests of all ages and abilities We request that all volunteers commit to one 3 5 hour shift per week weekdays or weekends for a minimum of six months during The Museum s regular hours of operation Insurance and security restrictions require the Museum to screen all applications carefully We will keep your application on file for one year and contact you for an interview in the event of a match between your interests experience availability and our needs The Carle s volunteer program provides support in the following ways ART STUDIO A deep interest in making things helps to foster the creative process in our guests and is at the core of the role of Art Studio volunteer Volunteers are not expected to be trained fine artists but they must be at ease working with different art materials and talking about the art making process During special events and programs The Studio can be very busy while on other days it is quiet and slower paced We are looking for people who are self directed and comfortable in both settings READING LIBRARY The role of a Reading Library volunteer is to inspire a life long love of reading We aim to have volunteers who find joy in reading with others and are experienced with leading engaging storytimes At

    All complete application packets will be reviewed after the application deadline for each session After an initial review of applications select applicants will be invited for an interview either by phone skype or at the Museum Art Studio Internship Unpaid Interns accepted for Fall J Term Spring and Summer The Art Studio is open to guests of all ages during regular museum hours and supports the mission of the Museum through its Every Day Art and Guided Art Programs that encourage making appreciating and thinking about art All of these activities support the National and Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks for art education K 12 Interns in the Art Studio interact with families and professionals daily participate in museum wide events expand their knowledge about museum and art education design special projects for museum guests and contribute ideas to our daily programming and blog Making Art with Children Daily duties include orienting the guests to the Art Studio space and materials assisting in the preparation of materials research and evaluation and initiating maintenance and clean up of the Studio Ideal candidates are outgoing highly organized energetic self starters pick up new techniques quickly and have a demonstrated interest in art education or museum studies Experience with photography and Photoshop is a plus Undergraduates and recent graduates are welcome to apply For more information visit The Art Studio s Blog Making Art with Children Collections and Exhibitions Internship Unpaid Interns accepted for Summer During the course of the summer the Collections and Exhibitions Department inventories and reviews the Museum s extensive permanent collection which includes over 5 000 pieces of art by Eric Carle on long term loan to the museum as well as over 6 000 works by various picture book illustrators Interns under the supervision of the Collection s Manager Registrar will work with the collections team to assist in performing a thorough inventory of the collection ensuring that it is accurately and efficiently organized and reviewing consolidating and updating the database as needed You will be trained in how to handle art and will learn standard museum practices in collections stewardship The interns may also provide Registrarial support for exhibitions This internship requires detail oriented and organized individuals excellent computer and record keeping skills and a working knowledge of MS Office programs Prior coursework or experience with collection management and databases is a plus Development and Marketing Internship Unpaid Interns accepted for Fall J Term Spring and Summer The Development and Marketing department supports the aims of the Museum by raising funds and spreading the Museum s message of art appreciation and early literacy Intern responsibilities include preparation of promotional materials and press mailings tracking of membership and donor attendance and giving and help with on site and off site meetings and promotional events Ideal candidates will have experience in an office or business environment be highly organized and articulate able to multi task in a fast paced and deadline oriented environment and be proficient in MS Word Excel
