which destroyed their FY 1C satellite and the accidental collision of Iridium 33 and Kosmos 2251 are treated separately so that their huge effect can be more readily appreciated The data are shown as both individual line graphs and as a cumulative sand chart The mass of individual pieces of debris is not known but is small compared to that of payloads and rocket stages For example all of the FY 1C debris totals roughly 1000 kg the mass of the original satellite Here is an attempt at estimating the mass of the orbiting satellite population dry masses are used i e liquid propellant mass is omitted The y axis of the graph is in metric tonnes The expert reader will spot the Mir and Skylab reentries Launches Orbital launches including Earth orbit and deep space launches Launch vehicle failures that reached orbit are included marginal orbit cases are included Note that for 2011 US launches exceed those of China only because the Sea Launch partnership is considered to be a US based launch system Below launch failures are also included and the data are also shown as percentages Suborbital launches The mesospheric launches green are mostly weather rockets NOAA

  • The orgs database
of the satellites it makes is often continuous across changes of identity of the parent company As an example we may consider the engine factory in Redmond Washington USA in operation since 1960 as Rocket Research Corp then Olin Aerospace 1985 1997 then Primex Technologies 1997 2001 then General Dynamics 2001 2002 then Aerojet Each of these phases is assigned a unique alphanumeric code RRC OLIN PRIMX GDOTS AJRED One of these phases is picked as the primary code ucode or unique code and the others are linked to it so you can tell they are all the same organization Other units of the same companies are given different codes so for example Aerojet s Solid Propulsion unit in Sacramento is given the code AJSP Each phase code is also optionally linked to a parent organization and a state country so both BOM Boeing Michoud 1961 73 and BOHB Boeing Huntington Beach have the parent BOC Boeing Company Seattle and the state US United States Exception When a company relocates an operation entirely to a previously unused location leaving nothing at the former location I may rarely and exceptionally choose identify the two locations using the same ucode for the two different locations for example the ucode AJ refers to Aerojet Engineering s original Pasadena location AJP in 1942 47 and to its Azusa location AJ in 1947 2001 Note that countries can have phases too the Czech republic is CSSR 1940 1990 CSFR 1990 1993 and CZ 1993 present sharing the ucode CZ Note that for countries extant in the early 21st century the ucode is usually the Internet TLD e g CN like cn for Zhongguo China although the usual single letter abbreviations have been used for European Union countries e g D for Deutschland Germany F for

  • Families
first stage families is about 200 much smaller than the 1000 or so different launch vehicle variants There are some grey areas in assigning vehicles to families but it s much less problematic than splitting hairs about slight differences between variants The rule I ve adopted for defining a new family is a change in the tankage diameter In some ways this is a superficial thing to a rocket engineer changes in the engine and the avionics will be much more significant than a change in the external dimensions but in practise the diameter criterion works well and reveals important design commonalities between different launch vehicles There are some marginal cases the Trident II and Trident I missiles are closely related but have different diameters The real complication comes in deciding which stage is the first stage For orbital vehicles it s pretty clear on a Delta II the Thor derived first stage is a true first stage it wouldn t make sense to count the GEM strapons as the core of the vehicle But for many sounding rockets the vehicle consists of a booster and sustainer with the booster falling off after only a couple of seconds Is a
