wrinkle into the case It appears that An Taisce did in fact take a case in addition to Sweetman and Mueller and those two are complaining about An Taisce settling Why don t I believe a word Sweetman says Mayo News Rossport residents say An Taisce undermined them On the first day of the case he Sweetman claimed that a settlement between An Taisce and the State was at an advanced stage and that their senior counsel was approached by the State with a view to settlement They refused to settle and decided to advance the case on three grounds One of the grounds was that An Bord Pleanála had failed to carry out an Appropriate Assessment as required under the Habitats Directive in the correct manner This was raised in the tenth day of the case and Mr Sweetman said it was to their amazement that An Taisce only requested that the decision be reverted to the Board to be corrected technically Mr Sweetman felt their case died when they could not disprove the assessment by Karl Kent deputy Chair of ABP that all members of the board had taken home the whole file for the whole Christmas period Mr Kent told counsel for Mr Sweetman and Ms Muller that the notes made over this period were shredded as were all notes made at the board meetings The person who had supported our case financially was in court for this examination and said to us that we must try and settle as he felt that we could not now win We agreed We were again approached by council for the State and informed that An Taisce were settling their case We then negotiated the best deal we could said Mr Sweetman He said the conditions included having both himself and Ms Muller nominated to the Conditions Monitoring Committee which was established to monitor the implementation of the conditions attached to the consents A spokesperson for Shell EP Ireland welcomed the settlement as a very significant day for the Corrib project Reply With Quote 15 11 2011 04 33 PM 23 Captain Con O Sullivan View Profile View withdrawn by An Taisce I was waiting to hear news of the public meeting that was to be held by An Taisce to explain to the community of Mayo the settlement that was made with Shell It was hard to find information because there was nothing in the news Finally I got to talk to one member of the local community Charles Stanley Smith Chair of An Taisce was to attend but he cancelled at the last minute and a young female volunteer was sent down alone to face the music By all accounts she was unable to actually explain why An Taisce settled when it was clear that the Government had failed to implement the EU law with regard to development consents The local community were essentially told that the case was not actually taken on behalf of them at all and that An Taisce was never opposed to the Shell refinery I get the feeling this isn t over yet This seems to be a pattern Local issue goes national Big NGO shows up and flexes muscles in the public interest Lawsuit is taken which locals rely on Big NGO settles case after getting concessions for the NGO fees expenses publicity and donations Local community left in a worse position than before the NGO arrived Last edited by Anti • The machinations of Luke "Ming" Flanagan MEP - Page 8
agency The government will not release the payment figures for Irish Water the first bills are now overdue which is a very obvious sign that the mass non payment boycott is working This is an issue that has really galvanised the country QUESTION In the end of May you confronted a German MEP Mr Herbert Reul using the blue card question What was it that you found most wrong in his argument You repeated to him You know nothing Do you think that s the case for most Germans REPLY Mr Reul was simply repeating the false propaganda being spread around the world about Ireland its bailout and its recovery propaganda by the way that s accepted even in places like Greece and Portugal who should know exactly how the media is used and abused to spread such nonsense I don t blame Mr Reul nor the German people whom I believe yes are also grossly misinformed about what has really been happening in the EU and in the eurozone particularly over the last six years It s been a frantic effort by the EU institutions led by the ECB to save what was a hugely structurally flawed currency at launch to save the major banks in the likes of Germany and France but not at all confined to those two countries while pretending they were saving the likes of partying Ireland and profligate Greece Many of us know the truth and we re determined to spread that message QUESTION You attended the Study days of GUE NGL in Athens a few days ago What was discussed What was the bottom line in your opinion Most of the debating time was given over to discussing the crisis in Greece with many outstanding contributions from a succession of impressive speakers from the new government I did my best to introduce Ireland and the Irish people especially as an ally suffering a similar fate to Greece albeit not to the same extent I could certainly identify though with much of what said with that same sentiment applying to Portugal and what s really happening there Here is a link to a post I have on Facebook summing up the week https www facebook com Lukemingfla 648130845838 0 QUESTION In the past you expressed the view that Ireland should not have joined the eurozone Would it be better off with a national currency Why Should Greece and other countries do the same REPLY There is now no argument even from those who designed it but that the euro was fundamentally structurally flawed at its launch There was no foresight no oversight no defences in place against what was very obviously going to happen in fact what was predicted would happen by eminent economists such as Paul de Grauwe Countries that previously paid a premium to borrow from the markets now found themselves getting hugely reduced interest rates and the billions flooded into the likes of Ireland Greece Italy Spain Portugal a veritable tsunami that eventually swamped those economies That in itself was bad enough but it s the response to the damage that was done that is most worrying Any illusions we might have had that we were living in any sort of community were immediately blown away Germany and France Merkel and Sarkozy this old new duopoly now dictated to us all and by God with the help of a few well off allies in the north were they going to protect their own were they going to put the rest of us under the heel of the jackboot Now they are in the process of forcing Greece to ignore its own electorate and surrender themselves totally to this new dictatorship or leave the euro In a currency dominated by Germany Ireland will never be treated equally or equitably nor will Greece They can break the Stability Growth Pact rules at will and have done when they were weak but we can t For that reason and to give us back major control of our destiny I believe we should leave the euro QUESTION Do you think there is a chance for change in Europe What form would that take For instance changes in the treaties e g the Euro Fiscal Pact Would it be enough REPLY I would love to be able to reply Yes of course to this question but based on what has happened in recent years based on where the power now rests in the EU with the Commission the Council and the ECB holding the reins the Parliament dominated by the EPP and S D not so grand coalition I see very little chance for the kind of major change that s needed to put the EU on the right course This would include a new Treaty reversing much of what happened in both Lisbon and Nice and blowing the Fiscal Compact clean out of the water QUESTION Do you see political change coming in Ireland You wrote on Facebook A return to Fianna Fáil is just that a return a return to Fine Gael well What did you mean by that Yes I see political change coming and the sooner the better As for that comment the major difference between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is a few letters of the alphabet they should do the honest thing and just combine into Fianna Gael because really when it comes to policy decisions they are peas in a pod Reminds of the story of Mouseland where the mice would switch from electing black cats to electing white cats without wondering why their situation never really changed Time to vote for mice Reply Flanagan MEP via ming A NEW VISION FOR EUROPE BY FIVE BLIND MIDDLE AGED MEN IN SUITS Please share During the week we had issued to us here an early copy of what s being called The Five Presidents Report but what is actually far more grandly titled Completing Europe s Economic and Monetary Union a report by Jean Claude Juncker in close cooperation with Donald Tusk Jeroen Dijsselbloem Mario Draghi and Martin Schulz That there ARE five Presidents of the EU should be a clue as to how crazy this place is Juncker is President of the European Commission Tusk of the European Council not to be confused with Council of the European Union what ye didn t know there were two Dijsselbloem of the Eurogroup Draghi of the European Central Bank and Schulz of the European Parliament and in this report are holding hands and agreeing that the way forward is to wade even deeper into the swamp in which we re already mired full economic union full financial union full fiscal union leading eventually a full metal straitjacket from which there will be no escape Ever All the groups in the parliament here have issued their own response to the report including the group to which I m attached GUE NGL The great thing about being an independent though and in a system where there is no whip is that you can always have your own opinion and I have mine did NOT sign up to the group response Here then my reaction NEW MEANING TO SUCCESSFUL AND STABLE For me the opening statement of the 5 Presidents report says everything you need to know about what follows The euro is a successful and stable currency I m from Ireland I don t measure success in terms of increases in mass emigration increase in suicide increase in mental illness increase in unemployment increase in homelessness increase in hospital waiting lists increase in numbers of those on trolleys on corridors who can t even get past A E in our hospitals increase in hospitals closed in wards and beds closed increase in our national debt by tens of billions due to the euro bubble increase in that same national debt by more tens of billions due solely to the bailout of the failed creditors of failed Irish banks I could go on and on and on Still on page one the Presidents tome goes on to state without a hint of embarrassment Europe s Economic and Monetary Union EMU today is like a house that was built over decades but only partially finished What kind of a builder takes decades to build a house yet even after all that time leaves it so structurally flawed that it partially collapses with the first storm In this report the same mistake is made they are building again on marshland and sand WE DO HAVE COMMON GROUND One statement I do agree with The euro is more than just a currency Indeed it is in far too many countries that adopted it from the start it became a weapon of mass destruction so that when I read following bit of further fiction This common destiny requires solidarity in times of crisis and respect for commonly agreed rules from all members I can t help a wry smile As we in Ireland know only too well the only solidarity shown by the EU institutions was to the big banks of Europe and the rest of the world whose losses have all been made good then forced on our shoulders As for respect for commonly agreed rules that obviously has to be imposed only on the smaller and weaker nations doesn t apply to either Germany or France who both in the early years broke those rules at will with France now again rightly of course doing their own thing Does anyone really believe that if Germany were to find itself in trouble in the coming years that they won t again ignore those rules THE FUTURE BY THE FAMOUS FIVE Starting out from that premise then the famous five go on to outline what needs to be done in the next decade Progress must happen on four fronts they proclaim First towards a genuine Economic Union that ensures each economy has the structural features to prosper within the Monetary Union Second towards a Financial Union that guarantees the integrity of our currency across the Monetary Union and increases risk sharing with the private sector This means completing the Banking Union and accelerating the Capital Markets Union Third towards a Fiscal Union that delivers both fiscal sustainability and fiscal stabilisation And finally towards a Political Union that provides the foundation for all of the above through genuine democratic accountability legitimacy and institutional strengthening All four Unions depend on each other Therefore they must develop in parallel and all euro area Member States must participate in all Unions And of course there it the obligatory chapter devoted to the new Holy Grail of Europe A NEW BOOST TO CONVERGENCE JOBS AND GROWTH At the end of the report a sop thrown to the masses the pretence of giving a damn about actual democracy Under the heading A key role for the European Parliament and national Parliaments we have the following First practical steps have been initiated by the European Parliament to strengthen parliamentary oversight as part of the European Semester Economic dialogues between the European Parliament and the Council the Commission and the Eurogroup have taken place in line with the provisions of the Six Pack and Two Pack legislation I ve been in this Parliament a year long enough to appreciate the value of those dialogues nil nada worthless EMU ISN T BROKEN IT S FAILED DISASTROUSLY SO Let s not put a tooth in it the euro has been a total disaster Every aim that was there for EMU Economic Monetary Union and for the euro before it was launched the exact opposite has happened It was meant to draw Europe together to provide stability growth prosperity all that good stuff now again being promised by the five great brains Instead we got this Six eurozone countries Greece Ireland Spain Italy Portugal Cyprus were forced to the verge of bankruptcy Two countries Germany and France but Germany in particular dictating to everyone else the old duopoly rides again Several countries with record unemployment levels Several countries with record employment levels An increasing divergence between rich and poor at national and at individual level Demonization of some nations and peoples deification of others Increasing nationalism and polarisation of people As reported The Economist s Pocket World In Figures 2013 p30 the three largest economies in the EU Germany France and Italy were ranked tenth fourteenth and third from bottom respectively in performance in the decade 2000 2010 with 12 EU countries figuring in the bottom 35 in the previous decade there wasn t one EU country within that block What happened at the pivot point between those decades CONCLUSION End the euro or at least cut the eurozone as it now stands Begin the dismantling process in a controlled fashion starting with Germany For most of us within the eurozone the value of the euro is grossly distorted and the greatest portion of that distortion is caused by Germany The differences between the various economies are too great far too great the constraints of the SGP too confining and too rigid for countries like Ireland As far as I can see we have no future in the euro the euro itself has no future When something this big fails this big it is folly to try to tweak it End it Reply With Quote 25
