  • Poly Prep Country Day School | Ann Oransoff Teaches 6th Grade Technology Class on “Augmented Reality”
    taught to prospective students last week and shared it with Poly s 6th graders in their Technology Class On Thursday afternoon in the Mac Lab 6th graders arrived and Oransoff directed them to sit around a seminar table She told them that they would be having a lesson about Augmented Reality and asked them for a definition of augmented After a few students guesses Oransoff suggested that any piano students try thinking about augmented notes in music James U 22 asked if augmented meant adding It means enhanced adding to something that already exists Oransoff said She said she would show them a short video on Augmented Reality before they would start their own AR projects The video briefly demonstrated how the Internet and reality work together Someone can point an iPhone at a store or item in a store for example and use an App to get layers of information or data about the store or item Augmented Reality requires a Smartphone with a connection to the Internet and software on the phone What else is needed 1 A trigger image 2 An event to occur when the trigger is hit 3 AR software Oransoff said an example of AR might be to use a photo of a piece of furniture in an Ikea catalog as a trigger to allow a shopper to test out how furniture would fit in a room Oransoff showed the students examples of simple Augmented Reality projects with built in animation She asked the 6th graders to take out their iPads and she would send them a link to Aurasma an augmented reality platform which according to its website changes the way we interact with the world Turn everyday objects images and places into new opportunities for engagement through striking augmented reality experiences Students

    Financial Aid Meet the Admissions Staff Take a Virtual Tour Giving Giving Guide Poly Fund Tower Society Matching Gifts Give Online Performing Arts Poly Fund 2015 16 Search Kassidi Cheng 17 Is Accepted into Very Competitive One Month Maimonides Women in Science Program for this Summer 4 25 2016 Cheng Was Assisted in the Process by Lori Redell of Poly s Mentoring Internship Program Poly junior Kassidi Cheng 17 received great news that she was accepted into the Maimonides Women in Science Program for this summer The Maimonides Women in Science Program has a very competitive application process and Cheng was selected from a large number of applicants Lori Redell P 10 11 Director of Poly s Mentoring and Internship Program Mathematics told the Pulse Poly s internship program supported four student applications and Kassidi was the one selected It s a big honor Redell told the Pulse I found out about the internship program through research of local opportunities I posted the internship for our students and four Poly girls applied Kassidi was selected from hundreds of applicants from across NYC to be one of 12 interns with this program The Maimonides Women in Science Program is a one month summer internship July 5 29 for female high school students who wish to pursue a career in medicine According to the Maimonides website the head of the program Dr Mara S Karamitopoulos and her colleagues inspire young women to pursue a career in science by providing a hands on learning experience during which the students will be assigned their own research projects leading to a presentation upon completion of the program Students will work with a female research associate and a female research resident assist surgeons in an outpatient setting learning more about the direct patient experience join surgeons

    Poly Fund Tower Society Matching Gifts Give Online Performing Arts Poly Fund 2015 16 Search Science Research Course s Brett Restrick 17 Won Second Award at the New York City Science Engineering Fair 4 25 2016 Restrick and Other Students in Science Research Course Present Their Projects at a Symposium on April 19 in the Joseph Dana Allen Library Brett Restrick 17 a member of Poly s Science Research course won a Second Award at the New York City Science Engineering Fair for her project Changing the Characteristics Associated with the Color Blue in Marketing Initiatives A Second Award means that I was in the top 15 in my category Restrick explained to the Pulse I am so excited to have received this award It was such an amazing experience and I feel so honored to have been able to compete against my peers I plan on going down one of three paths in my senior year I have decided to study the time it takes before the preliminary associations with blue come back after the program apply this test to associations with other colors such as red with excitement or look into whether these associations with colors are culturally relative or universally constrained Competing at NYCSEF gave me an opportunity to get real feedback from real professionals in fields that interest me and see the wonderful projects that my peers had created Restrick was one of six Poly students to present their Science Research course projects at the New York City Science and Engineering Fair on March 6 The entire Science Research class presented their projects at a symposium on Tuesday afternoon April 19 in the Joseph Dana Allen Library at Poly Science Research is a three year program led by teacher Olivia Tandon Science which begins sophomore year and introduces students to rigorous scientific experimentation Students apply for admission to the program in the spring of their freshman year Usually five to seven students are accepted each year Students design and develop their own research projects for which they write a series of formal papers and submit them to both local and national competitions such as the New York City Science and Engineering Fair Poly s Science Research Symposium on April 19 Tandon welcomed parents students Headmaster David B Harman P 04 06 and Upper School Head Bud Cox to the annual Science Research Symposium She explained It is important for them the students to talk about their findings and present to other people The symposium she said would consist of brief presentations by the students followed by a poster session in the hallway outside the library during which the audience could ask specific questions During their presentations students spoke about their research on wide ranging topics from neuroblastomas to insomnia to concrete Many had already spent or will spend summer internships with distinguished researchers in the fields of genetics agriculture neurosurgery or paleontology Each student described how he or she had collected data and modifications each may

    Photos Videos Poly Publications Parents Bus Schedules Lunch Menus Alumni Performing Arts Home Admissions Welcome to Poly Upper School Middle School Lower School Tuition Financial Aid Meet the Admissions Staff Take a Virtual Tour Giving Giving Guide Poly Fund Tower Society Matching Gifts Give Online Performing Arts Poly Fund 2015 16 Search Fourth Grade Raises Almost 6 000 with Fun Run Walk to Benefit Keep a Child Alive on Dyker Heights Campus Track 4 25 2016 Annual Fundraiser Assists Organization That Provides HIV Treatment Care Food and Support to Children in Africa and India Poly s Fourth Grade raised almost 6 000 in the third annual Fun Run Walk to benefit Keep a Child Alive on the Dyker Heights track April 22 Led by fourth grade teacher Deirdra Hazeley 00 Lower School children and parents ran or walked a mile four laps on Poly s track at the Gintel Fields starting at 9 AM All funds raised go to Keep a Child Alive which is dedicated to providing life saving HIV treatment care nutritious food support services and love to children and families affected by HIV in Kenya Rwanda South Africa Uganda and India A number of parents as well as Head of Lower School Larry Donovan arrived for the event and many ran or walked along with the children Pat Morris Fourth Grade Teacher Garrett Kennedy Associate Teacher Grade 4 and Mary Rice Associate Teacher Grade 4 either ran the race or cheered the students on A representative of Keep a Child Alive Monica Merlis spoke to the students before the start of the race thanking them for their hard work Merlis joined the runners in the race Hazeley gave the signal for the race to begin and runners were off in a pack with parents close behind Each
