    Directions View Poly s News Archive Our Program Academics Athletics Upper School Middle School Lower School Poly Prep Summer Academic Excellence Honor Societies Performing Arts Visual Arts Technology Sustainability Diversity Library Policies Health Safety Explore Poly Prep Summer News Calendar News Daily Calendar Athletics Calendar Photos Videos Poly Publications Parents Bus Schedules Lunch Menus Alumni Performing Arts Home Admissions Welcome to Poly Upper School Middle School Lower School Tuition Financial Aid Meet the Admissions Staff Take a Virtual Tour Giving Giving Guide Poly Fund Tower Society Matching Gifts Give Online Performing Arts Poly Fund 2015 16 Search Our Program Visual Arts Our Vision for Visual Arts Poly Is the Imagination Our 21st Century Goals The Visual Arts Department at Poly Prep emphasizes the practice of studio art by helping students develop a sensibility and a commitment to the hands on experiential process of art making We expose students to a range of ideas methods and materials to promote their visual literacy We also ask students to participate in a critical analysis of the meaning and practice of studio art All courses complement studio practice with an investigation into the historical and cultural backgrounds of various periods and styles We further develop issues relevant to art through discussion critique slides videos readings written work workshops visiting artists field trips and student exhibitions We emphasize the relationship between art and life to foster an innovative and personal approach to the making of art The department also works to have students reflect on how art can be a way to think critically and creatively about the world around them Art Making Facilities Our students learn and grow as artists as they work with our faculty in outstanding art making facilities Middle and Upper School students use two large light filled loft like spaces for drawing painting doing collage and other two dimensional artwork The ceramics studio makes up our third indoor art making space Equipped with potters wheels and drying racks our ceramics studio also offers students the rare opportunity to use multiple professional level kilns gas fired electric and raku to enhance their understanding of firing and glazing both technically and as a means of personal expression Of course with our 25 acre college like campus and our greenhouse Poly students can also explore the natural world to train the hand and eye and as a subject of representation Exhibitions and Visiting Experts Key to the development of young artists are opportunities to prepare and exhibit their work and to interact with professionals and visiting experts At Poly the Visual Arts Department is committed to yearlong rotating displays of student artwork on the walls and in the hallways of the school Each year we also mount three major shows of student work in the winter and spring and the annual Senior Show one each with its epicenter in the Tower Gallery a dedicated art exhibition space at the base of Poly s Tall White Tower Each year we also organize a visiting

    enhanced technological support We are very excited at the expansion of iPad use in the Middle School We believe the program encourages our students in the areas of technological literacy adaptability and curiosity At Poly we are always seeking new ways to teach and for students to learn in the classroom List of 3 items Laptops The technology department manages a fleet of 182 Mac and PC laptops to provide students with access to the latest technologies These laptops are used for learning support delivering presentations and student classwork Any class can request the use of these laptops at any time and several of these computers are available for students to borrow from our library Students are not required to bring laptops to campus but it is strongly suggested that they have access to a computer at home Upper School students may bring their own laptops on campus and can connect to Poly s guest wireless network provided they meet basic requirements such as up to date virus protection Middle School students are not currently allowed to bring their own laptops on campus but they will be provided with Poly laptops in class when necessary All students can borrow laptops for on campus work from our library or from our new Learning Center with permission Software Programs Software The technology department obtains the latest versions of software used in our classrooms in addition to software that will be important for students in college and beyond For example students have access to the latest versions of Microsoft Office the Adobe CS suite Geometer s Sketchpad and many more We frequently add software that assists students in attaining the curricular goals of Poly Prep and make these available for all students to use and learn Google Apps for Education Google Apps for Education is Google s suite of collaborative online document calendaring and website tools Used in the classroom this suite gives students ubiquitous access to their content and presents the opportunity for real time collaborative group work Teachers also use this suite to communicate assignments and announcements to students and to provide students with a place to retrieve necessary documents and materials Email All students in the Middle and Upper School are given a Poly Prep email address This mailbox is managed by the technology department and allows students a fast and reliable method for communicating with their teachers and fellow students These mailboxes can be accessed anywhere online or through a student s personal mobile device with the assistance of the technology department In addition to using these email addresses for internal communications Upper School students frequently use their address to communicate outside of Poly such as with various organizations for volunteer and charitable opportunities as well as colleges during the application process Middle School Computer Clubs The Middle School currently has an after school robotics club that is open for students in grades 6 through 8 Students in this club spend their time building and programming robots using Lego

    ecosystem destruction pollution of our land air and water and global warming jeopardize human health and threaten the animals and plants that share our planet While global trends have global causes Poly believes solutions start locally Poly pledges to help protect Planet Earth by reducing our carbon footprint engaging in sustainable practices as a school promoting environmental education and stewardship and modeling a green ethic in everything we do We also believe our Planet Pledge naturally extends Poly s mission as a country day school with two campuses to educate the mind body and character of our students For this very reason we have already demonstrated green leadership From our ongoing student led recycling program to the construction of the city s first LEED certified school building at our Lower School Poly has taken significant concrete actions to go green Therefore to build on past achievements and to fulfill our Planet Pledge Poly will strive to 1 Involve the entire Poly family including students faculty parents staff alumni and trustees 2 Reach beyond Poly to our Brooklyn neighbors to collaborate on local sustainability and greening 3 Integrate the environment and sustainability into our curriculum and engage in innovative interdisciplinary projects to promote environmental education and stewardship 4 Incorporate sustainable practices into all school operations as resources permit including energy use waste disposal and recycling building use and design grounds and campus maintenance and food service and 5 Evaluate our progress in greening Poly on an on going basis issue periodic reports on Poly s Planet Pledge and celebrate our successes to the Poly family and the wider community An architect s rendering of the proposed ponds renovation to restore ecological balance to Poly s ponds and make them a more effective outdoor laboratory for faculty and students studying ecology and biology The Green Schools Alliance Poly Prep is a member of The Green Schools Alliance an international consortium of more than 1 950 schools pledged to reduce their carbon emissions promote environmental responsibility and educate the next generation of ecologically conscious green citizens Click here for The Green Schools Alliance Greening Plans and Projects Poly remains committed to future green building projects and campus upgrades as part of its Blue and Gray Go Green campaign Poly s new educational greenhouse designed to enhance the school s Nursery through 12th grade science curriculum was recently funded by generous donations from the Class of 1959 and by Poly parents during Auction 2009 Groundbreaking took place during Special Reunion 2009 A link to Poly s greenhouse plans appear here Greenhouse Plans Poly also seeks to restore its upper and lower ponds which have filled with silt and debris need re planting and suffer from erosion Restored ponds would improve the local environment re beautify the front end of the Dyker Heights campus and add additional opportunities for Poly students to study pond biology and ecology A link to Poly s proposed Ponds restoration plans appears here Pond Restoration Plans List of 4 items
