    Fellow Institute of Transportation Engineers Subject Self Driving Vehicles Are They Real How Will They Impact Transportation Self driving vehicles will be a disruptive technology Who will be the winners Who will be the losers Come and find out Industry reports indicate that a substantial portion of the automotive fleet could be equipped with some autonomous driving capabilities by 2030 By 2040 automated driving is expected to be pervasive During the past 60 years transportation planners were able to assume that travel choices would be limited to modes with familiar characteristics such as rail transit and autos Today however planners are faced with an unprecedented change in the way on road vehicles will be used when they become automated This presentation will focus on defining the capabilities of various levels of automation and how they are likely to impact the nature of travel It will also address the benefits to society environmental risks and potential land use impacts of autonomous vehicles Finally we will examine the impact of self driving cars on the transit industry Jerome M Lutin is an independent consultant who has been actively engaged in research and planning for automated vehicles Jerry has been an invited speaker on the subject at more than a dozen meetings and conferences His career includes 50 years of professional experience in transportation planning and engineering Jerry retired from positions as Distinguished Research Professor at New Jersey Institute of Technology and as Senior Director of Statewide and Regional Planning at New Jersey Transit where he planned new light rail lines and the Newark International Airport rail station A Fellow of the Institute of Transportation Engineers Jerry has been actively involved in the development and teaching of Intelligent Transportation Systems ITS standards for the transit industry He holds a Master of Architecture and
