    Payton Kathleen Preziosi Libby Ramage and Richard Sanders explores the ingenuity of animal construction and design in nature Opening reception Friday May 13 5 30 7 30 p m Free Gallery hours Monday Friday 10 a m 5 p m and Saturday May 24 1 4 p m Gallery is closed holidays please call ahead to confirm availability at 609 924 4646 www drgreenway org Re connect with your wild side and experience the creativity of nature s designs From a silkworm secreting a single strand of silk and swathing itself in a cocoon to a female organ pipe wasp braiding balls of mud into a tubular nest to nourish her young some of the most exquisite designs can be found in nature Wild Designs artists were inspired by the ingenuity of animal architects and the wild designs that they create in nature The exhibition aims to open our eyes to the amazing engineering feats throughout the animal world says guest curator Donna Payton It is a reflection of the behavioral capabilities of animals and of what animal building tells us about the nature of human creativity The animal architecture serves as a departure point for the artists rather than a scientific replication Some of the same construction materials animals use in their architecture have been combined with traditional art materials and technology Animals and insects have inspired writers poets musicians artists and biologists Many cultures creation theories incorporate animals their homes and webs The original idea for this exhibition came from the book Animal Architects Building and the Evolution of Intelligence by James L Gould and Carol Grant Gould I chose the nest designs first because it reflected my visual voice of the overlapping part connecting with other parts similar to the style in my work says exhibiting artist

    4646 www drgreenway org Press Release Princeton N J D R Greenway Land Trust s Spring Native Plant Sale will be held Friday May 20 3 to 6 p m and Saturday May 21 9 a m to noon at D R Greenway s Native Plant Nursery at the Johnson Education Center One Preservation Place Princeton During the Native Plant Sale D R Greenway nursery staff and volunteers will be available to advise on the best choice of plants for gardening projects Free 609 924 4646 www drgreenway org Eco conscious gardeners know that using native species provides essential food for wildlife and contributes to a healthy and biodiverse ecosystem all while creating low maintenance plantings D R Greenway s Native Plant Nursery is a community resource for regionally native plants Native plants are adapted to central New Jersey s climate making them more drought resistant than most exotic plants and also provide essential food habitat resources for wildlife Of particular concern are migratory species that depend on native plants for fuel before and after their long journeys and for food and nesting materials during breeding season Current well known examples include the monarch butterfly and rufa red knot dependent specifically on the milkweed and the horseshoe crab respectively for their survival Because central New Jersey s native plants and wildlife evolved together they are highly adapted to and dependent upon each other Native plant resources are especially critical for wildlife at energy intensive times of the year such as spring and fall migration and during courtship and breeding In turn native plants rely upon wildlife for pollination and seed dispersion Whereas indigenous plants support diversity and disease resistance exotic invasive species form monocultures that outcompete other plants Replacing them with native species which co exist creates a complex vibrant
