    the RCDSO Council meeting held on November 13 2014 is now available on the College website Click here to read the latest Council Highlights If you have any questions please contact RCDSO Registrar Irwin Fefergrad by phone at 416 934 5625 toll free at 1 800 565 4591 or by e mail at ifefergrad rcdso org October 20 2014 Important Information about Enterovirus D68 EV D68 Enterovirus D68 EV D68 is a specific enterovirus that causes respiratory illness Symptoms range from a mild cold like illness with coughing and wheezing to severe infections that require hospitalization The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has been working with Public Health Ontario and other partners to monitor for and provide timely guidance regarding the recent circulation of EV D68 in the United States and Canada For general information about EV D68 and recommended infection prevention and control measures click here For detailed guidance about routine and additional contact and droplet precautions and screening protocols to prevent the transmission of EV D68 click here October 17 2014 Province Enhancing Measures to Prepare For Ebola Virus Disease The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care has issued a news release about its plan to take action to enhance the province s readiness to contain and treat any potential case of Ebola in the province The Ministry states that these measures will further protect the safety of all Ontarians including health care workers The safety of the Ontario public including our dedicated health care workers is my top priority and I am committed to doing everything necessary to protect their safety said Dr Eric Hoskins Minster of Health and Long Term Care These enhanced measures will make our preparedness even stronger and I will continue to work in partnership with our health care providers including our dedicated frontline health care workers to enhance our ability to safely contain and treat any infectious illness I will continue to monitor the situation and work closely with the Interim Chief Medical Officer of Health to ensure the safety and protection of all Ontarians Click here to read the news release from the Ministry in its entirety October 15 2014 Important Information about Ebola Virus Disease EVD Ebola virus disease EVD is a severe disease that causes haemorrhagic fever in humans and animals Diseases that cause Viral Haemorrhagic Fevers such as Ebola are often fatal as they affect the body s vascular system and can lead to significant internal bleeding and organ failure As stated by the Chief Public Health Officer of Canada Dr Gregory Taylor who attended a meeting of the Council of Chief Medical Officers of Health to discuss the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa on October 14 2014 the risk to Canadians remains very low The Ebola virus itself does not spread easily from person to person it is not like the flu Ebola is spread by touching the body fluids for example blood saliva secretions of a person sick with the disease
