    Rethink Your Drink Injury Prevention Growing Up Columns Locations Main Campus Satellite Locations Emergency Urgent Care About Us Newsroom Press Releases Police Officers Delivered 60 000 Teddy Bears to Rady Children s Patients Newsroom Police Officers Delivered 60 000 Teddy Bears to Rady Children s Patients About Us Who We Are Newsroom Press Releases Executive Team Facts and Figures Patient Stories Research Get Involved Events Publications Police Officers Delivered 60 000 Teddy Bears to Rady Children s Patients December 10 2013 The 23rd Annual San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive hosted by Escondido Police and the San Diego County Sheriff s Department took place on Dec 10 at Rady Children s Hospital San Diego Local state and federal officers from San Diego County agencies gathered at the USS Museum where they enjoyed a breakfast sponsored by Sycuan About 100 officers then drove their patrol cars stuffed with new teddy bears and other stuffed animals in a caravan to Rady Children s for the annual drop off The Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive was started by Coronado Police Officer Brian Hardy in 1990 Hardy drove to the Hospital to make a special delivery during the holidays to sick and

    Barletti Helps Kick Off Ice Skating Season November 20 2013 It s that time of year to once again lace up those skates for the 17th Annual Rady Children s Hospital s Fantasy on Ice presented by Sycuan The rink opens on November 21 at 5 p m at Horton Square Former cancer patient Jaydon Barletti will help kick off the opening night celebration with the official countdown to start the season Four year old Jaydon battled a rare and aggressive cancer in his kidney known as Clear Cell Sarcoma The Oceanside boy has since recovered and has been cancer free for more than a year Last year Fantasy on Ice helped raise more than 130 000 for the Peckham Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Rady Children s The Peckham Center is the largest pediatric hematology oncology program serving San Diego Imperial and Riverside counties and is the only facility in San Diego County for pediatric bone marrow transplants For the third year the Center has been ranked among the nation s best pediatric cancer program by U S News World Report Every year nearly 200 children are diagnosed with cancer and almost 400 children receive treatment at the Center The rink hours are from 10 a m to 10 p m seven days a week through the holidays and will remain open until January 5 2014 but will be closed on Christmas Day Admission which includes the rental of the skates is 14 for adults and 12 for children under 12 Season tickets with unlimited access are also available for 35 This year s sponsors include Sycuan band of Kumeyaay Nation NBC 7 San Diego The Irvine Company Office Properties L L Printers SPIRE Construction SENTRE Partners Quick Dry Flood Services Walmart and Westin Gaslamp Quarter Hotel

    Research Get Involved Events Publications Andrew Krakowski M D Receives Award for Innovative Scar Treatment Project October 30 2013 Andrew Krakowski M D pediatric dermatologist at Rady Children s Hospital San Diego was awarded a 10 000 grant to support his project MissionSkin org his innovative Internet based platform that allows physicians to share knowledge about scar treatment Dr Krakowski is the first recipient of the Dermatologist from the Heart program in the United States launched in partnership with La Fondation La Roche Posay I ve met hundreds of children who have been physically scarred said Dr Krakowski I want nothing more than to give them easy access to treatment options that will relieve them of the physical reminders of their traumas and ultimately make them feel better about themselves Dr Krakowski was recognized for his achievement at the American Society for Dermatological Surgery annual meeting in Chicago in October He was chosen out of a pool of applicants who submitted proposals outlining projects aimed at enhancing patients quality of life A five member panel reviewed each submission and selected Dr Krakowski s project The inspiration for this project came about when Dr Krakowski observed the significant lack of open discussion regarding scar treatment This area of medicine has historically been overlooked and under appreciated given that scars are often viewed as an expected consequence of injuries The goal of MissionSkin org is to be the first and only web portal dedicated to directly improving our knowledge of scar treatment and revision said Dr Krakowski The benefit of the unique website is two fold Scar patients will be connected with local experts in their region and additionally dermatologists burn surgeons reconstructive surgeons and primary care physicians will have a forum to consult with and educate one another regarding scar treatment

  • Rady Children’s and Kohl’s Join Forces to Offer Free Car Seat Inspections
    Free Car Seat Inspections Oct 25 2013 Rady Children s Hospital San Diego and Kohl s have joined forces to offer free car seat inspections to the public at Kohl s 134 N El Camino Real in Encinitas during a Halloween themed event on Saturday Oct 26 from 9 a m to 2 p m Inspections are performed by technicians through the Kohl s Transportation Safety Program at Rady Children s made possible by Kohl s Department Stores through the Kohl s Cares cause merchandise program Local radio stations KyXy 96 5 and ENERGY 103 7 will be on site promoting car safety and the car seat inspections Kohl s will make a check presentation for 150 565 to Rady Children s for the Kohl s Transportation Safety Program at 12 30 p m The donation supports the Kohl s Transportation Safety Program at Rady Children s which educates the public on transportation and pedestrian safety and includes car seat inspections During these inspections parents are educated in safety in and around vehicles and the technicians ensure that parents can install their car seats before they leave The car seat inspections can be booked by appointment through the Kohl s Transportation Safety website kohlscarsafety org or by walk up based on availability Families can learn about transportation safety at the event through safety stations that educate and simulate real life situations There will be giveaways for kids and attendees are encouraged to come in costume Since 2004 Kohl s has donated more than 1 3 million to Rady Children s The donations were collected from Kohl s stores located in the San Diego area Kohl s commitment to Rady Children s is made possible through the Kohl s Cares cause merchandise program Through this initiative Kohl s sells 5 books

    Children s Rethink Your Drink Injury Prevention Growing Up Columns Locations Main Campus Satellite Locations Emergency Urgent Care About Us Newsroom Press Releases Anonymous Gift of Rare Gold Coin Inspires Heart of Gold Challenge Newsroom Anonymous Gift of Rare Gold Coin Inspires Heart of Gold Challenge About Us Who We Are Newsroom Press Releases Executive Team Facts and Figures Patient Stories Research Get Involved Events Publications Anonymous Gift of Rare Gold Coin Inspires Heart of Gold Challenge It all started with a man in a truck Every year during our annual Kids NewsDay fundraiser a mystery donor drives up to our spot at the NBC building in downtown San Diego and hands us a gift Sometimes he gives us an envelope stuffed with cash Other times his gift is more unique like the year he donated a peanut butter jar full of silver dollars One thing always remains the same he wants to remain anonymous This year s gift was the most intriguing of all Inside the envelope in addition to 200 in cash we found five old U S coins We brought them to a local coin shop to see how much they were worth Much to our amazement the shop owner appraised one of the coins at 1700 The other coins brought the total value to 1765 50 But it gets better The coin store owner Chad Martin was so touched by the man s generosity that he pledged to match that amount and donate it to Rady Children s This selfless example of paying it forward inspired us to launch the Heart of Gold Challenge We re hoping that others will also be touched by this story of giving and reach into their hearts to help the sick and injured children at Rady Children s This is
