  • Inspiring Former Patients Help Launch the Campaign for Rady Children’s
    With the help of teams of doctors nurses and therapists Kassidy is making a remarkable comeback from a ruptured brain aneurism that left her in a coma for three months When she regained consciousness Kassidy spent five weeks working with physical and speech therapists at Rady Children s relearning how to walk speak and eat Multiple surgeries followed including an 11 hour procedure to cut off blood flow to the abnormal mass of blood vessels that caused the aneurism Kassidy still receives follow up care and recently teamed up with a service dog named Chase that helps her balance Kassidy continues to impress with her recovery recently earning a second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do There s one word for the doctors at Rady Children s amazing Kassidy said They will forever be in my heart and hopefully we ll keep in touch for a very long time Ian Quinones 14 represents Technology Ian s heart stopped while in gym class He was rushed to Rady Children s where doctors induced a coma and placed him on an ECMO machine to stabilize his heart ECMO or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation is advanced technology that circulates blood outside the body When Ian was stable Rady Children s surgeons conducted a radiofrequency catheter ablation procedure in which a catheter was threaded up through Ian s leg and into the heart Radiofrequency energy was targeted to the pathways causing the abnormal heart rhythm destroying those pathways In Ian s case technology truly saved his life When I woke up in the hospital I was surrounded by machines and cords were plugged in my nose and attached to my arms Ian said But the doctors and nurses were so nice and welcoming that they made it easier They saved my life Spunky 4 year old Zara Brazel represents Discovery In 2009 Zara was diagnosed with a deadly form of childhood cancer and spent seven months receiving chemotherapy as part of a clinical trial to treat her form of leukemia Rady Children s UC San Diego Medical School and a network of hospitals worldwide are members of the Children s Oncology Group COG This elite group discovers life saving treatments and improves outcomes for children with cancer by sharing critical information gathered through clinical trials By actively participating in this network of shared knowledge Rady Children s is fulfilling its obligation to provide access to the very latest research for every child Thanks to the treatment she received during her clinical trial Zara is thriving with no signs of cancer I think research is very important because without doing more research and developing new treatments for children who knows where Zara would have been today Zara s mother Colette said Kassidy Ian Zara are just three examples of the care we provide to the 150 000 children that we treat every year at Rady Children s said Kathleen Sellick President and CEO of Rady Children s Gifts to this campaign mean these children will

  • Rady Children’s Researchers Find Heart Stent Effective in Very Young Patients
    of The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions SCAI Rady Children s researchers found coronary stent implantation to be a feasible and safe palliative option for children fifteen months and younger Studies have shown that in adults with reduced blood flow to the heart known as acute coronary syndrome ACS stent implantation significantly reduces mortality While ACS is less common in children there are congenital and acquired heart disease that may compromise coronary circulation in the pediatric population Due to increased risk of coronary interventions and difficulty of cardiac catheterization techniques in pediatric patients PCI is not a recommended treatment strategy in this age group A research team led by Dr András Bratincsák from Rady Children s conducted a retrospective review of seven children who had PCI between June 2006 and June 2010 Of those included in the study all were under 18 years of age and four were 15 months or younger PCI techniques included balloon coronary angioplasty and coronary stent implantation Researchers analyzed patient data that included underlying diagnosis comorbidites catheterization technique and outcomes In all seven cases successful stent placement in the proximal portion of the left or right coronary arteries with excellent revascularization was achieved The average diameter of the heart arteries was 0 65 mm prior to the intervention Balloon angioplasty did not completely resolve the stenosis and bare metal stents were then implanted to a mean internal diameter of 2 5 mm The team determined that the average intervention free period was 434 days after stent implantation Restenosis and thrombosis did not occur in cases where the implanted stent diameter was greater than 2 5 mm and patients received dual anti platelet therapy We provide evidence that stent implantation is a relatively safe option for pediatric patients with coronary stenosis including those under the

  • Ariel Feldstein, M.D., Joins Medical Staff at Rady Children’s
    of pediatric hepatology My vision is to continue to strengthen the work that is being done at Rady Children s and in the next several years become one of the top 5 programs in the country said Feldstein I also want to develop new programs such as the inflammatory bowel disease center and expand the current liver disease program Dr Feldstein arrived from the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland Ohio where he served since 2004 and most recently held the position of Director of Research for the Pediatric Institute His clinical expertise is centered on the field of pediatric Hepatology He currently follows one of the largest populations of children with fatty liver disease as well as autoimmune hepatitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis While at the Cleveland Clinic he developed the Pediatric Preventive Metabolic Clinic a multi disciplinary team of physicians nurse practitioners dietitians exercise physiologists and other healthcare professionals who take a comprehensive approach to preventing the onset progression of metabolic complications of obesity in children Dr Feldstein has pioneered the development of non invasive tests for assessing liver damage in patients with liver disease and holds various patents for these markers His research is currently supported by several grants from the National Institutes of Health NIH as well as foundation American College of Gastroenterology and industry Nestle grants He has published extensively in high impact journals including articles in Nature Journal of Clinical Investigation Gastroenterology and the Journal of Hepatology Dr Feldstein has received a number of awards including AGA Research Scholar Award the Research Excellence in GI and Liver REGAL Award The Cleveland Clinic Innovator Award Best Doctors in America America s Top Pediatricians and Who s Who in Science and Engineering among others Dr Feldstein attended the University of Buenos Aires Argentina and completed his pediatric residency
