    Outcomes Acute Cardiac Unit Team Heart Transplant Research and Clinical Trials Support Group Resources Locations Patient Stories Cardiovascular Surgery Acute Cardiac Unit Rose Pavilion 3rd Floor South 3020 Children s Way San Diego CA 92123 858 966 5852 858 966 8566 The 30 bed Acute Cardiac Unit of Rady Children s Heart Institute provides cardiac inpatient care for people of all ages from newborns to adults with congenital or acquired heart disease It is a separate physical space within the Hospital solely devoted to all levels of inpatient cardiac care from admission to discharge with a focus on family centered care In order to meet the needs of all patients the 30 bed Acute Cardiac Unit consists of two components A cardiovascular intensive care unit CVICU and a cardiac step down unit CSU Staffed by critical care cardiac physicians and nurses 24 hours a day the CVICU cares for cardiology and cardiovascular surgery patients when they are most critically ill As patients recover they progress to the CSU and on to discharge Many patients are admitted to the CVICU within hours of being born The unit will also care for all heart failure transplant and patients on assisted devices when this program begins in 2014 All 30 beds in the Acute Cardiac Unit are capable of functioning as a CVICU level bed or CSU bed assuring an appropriate level of care based on the needs of the patient To ensure continuity of care the team that cares for patients throughout their procedures continues to care for them in the unit afterwards And since a consistent team cares for all cardiac patients admitted to the unit patients who return to the Hospital for subsequent procedures will recognize the doctors and nurses A full range of cardiac services are provided including Patient

    using significantly less radiation than a standard X ray up to 9 times less The lower radiation is particularly important for children with spinal abnormalities who will be monitored throughout their lifetimes The EOS provides remarkable detail and can produce three dimensional images of the spine enabling physicians to provide a more accurate diagnosis and plan an effective course of treatment Frequently Asked Questions Is the EOS available to all patients at Rady Children s Any child needing a standing X ray of the spine and has an order from his or her physician can have an X ray on the EOS machine How can my child get an X ray on the EOS machine You need to have a referral and order from a physician The order must provide a diagnosis and be written as follows AP LAT STANDING T L SPINE ON EOS If my child is scheduled for X rays at Rady Children s can I request that they be taken on the EOS machine No You must have an order from a physician How old does a child have to be to get an X ray on the EOS machine A child needs to be able to follow directions and stand completely still by himself in the EOS machine for up to 20 seconds Can my child have an EOS X ray for his broken bone No The EOS is used only for standing X rays of the spine not for X rays of the arm leg hand or foot Is there an additional charge for an EOS X ray No The charge is the same as a traditional X ray Will my insurance cover the cost of an EOS X ray If your insurance plan covers outpatient X rays it should cover an X ray

    Program Rady Children s Specialists Neonatology Neuro NICU Program Neonatology Team Conditions Treated Services High Risk Infant Follow up Clinic Neuro NICU Program Parent Education Research Clinical Trials Fellowship Resources Locations Patient Stories Neonatology Neuro NICU Program 3020 Children s Way San Diego CA 92123 858 966 5819 858 966 4930 The Neuro NICU Program aims to prevent brain injury in infants through detecting and preventing neurological problems such as seizures Seizures especially those that occur in the first month of life destroy brain cells and can cause learning difficulties memory problems developmental problems and a predisposition to developing epilepsy later in life The program is the only one of its kind in Southern California and one of only 10 such programs in the country In our program infants who are exhibiting signs of seizures such unstable vital signs or lack of alertness are immediately put on an electroencephalogram EEG to check their brain s electrical activity If they begin to have seizures they are treated with anticonvulsant medication We also have a large computer server for our EEGs with protected online access which enables our doctors to monitor brain signals remotely As a result we can spot a seizure even when we re not physically at the hospital Another common source of brain injuries in infants is perinatal asphyxia which can occur when a newborn is deprived of oxygen at birth For this condition the standard of care is treatment with a cooling blanket to reduce the newborn s temperature Rady Children s has been using induced hypothermia treatment for several years and as the result of a study enabled by our program see below hypothermia treatment is being started sooner in the ambulance while babies are being transferred to our NICU from the hospitals where they were born

  • Futuristic Robots Allow Doctors to Examine Patients from Anywhere
    perform their jobs in ways not previously possible They can see hear be heard and move around in any remote facility including being able to visually examine patients without being physically present We ve found the majority of patients treated with telemedicine technology have a favorable response said Dr Anthony Magit director of Rady Children s telemedicine program Patients realize they are seeing specialists who might not be accessible to them in their own location so they feel they are getting cutting edge high technology care from top experts With satellite locations ranging from 20 minutes to more than an hour away the telemedicine robots allow Rady Children s experts to consult on cases in a more timely and efficient manner Rady Children s currently has funding to purchase 16 of these advanced robots Some of the robots are already in use at Rady Children s neonatal intensive care unit NICU satellite locations In the past when I would get an urgent call about a patient while I was away from the NICU I would either have to wait until I got to the hospital or I would be on the phone trying to understand what was happening said Dr Gail Knight Clinical Chief of the Division of Neonatology Now I can pull off the road and simply call up the robot on my cell phone to see what is going on It only takes 30 seconds Various community partners have provided funding for the robots including Cricket Wireless which donated 186 000 to purchase up to 12 robots In addition Cox Cares Foundation and Rest Haven Children s Health Fund each purchased one robot and Rady Children s Auxiliary purchased two one by the Southeast Cluster Unit and one by the North County Unit The Rest Haven robot is
