    Store at Rady Children s Rethink Your Drink Injury Prevention Growing Up Columns Locations Main Campus Satellite Locations Emergency Urgent Care Programs Services Pain Services Acute Pain Service Pain Services Acute Pain Service Pain Services Acute Pain Service Chronic Pain Program Resources Locations Acute Pain Service What do we do The Acute Pain Service is a inpatient consulting service which assists in the management of difficult to manage pain end of life pain withdrawal symptoms and weaning from opiates managing patient nurse controlled anesthesia PCA NCA and epidural anesthesia There is also a Chronic Pain Management Program which is an outpatient program that features interdisciplinary treatment of children and adolescents who have chronic pain What is acute pain Pain is an unpleasant sensory and or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in terms of such damage IASP Acute pain is pain which is of short duration usually less than one week It stems from some ongoing pathology such as tissue damage or pain after having surgery trauma or sickle cell crisis Tissue damage causes pain receptors to be activated These pain receptors transmit signals through the spinal cord to the brain to be processed and

    Pain Service Chronic Pain Program Resources Locations Chronic Pain Program The outpatient Chronic Pain Clinic offers an interdisciplinary approach to treating children and adolescents Among the conditions treated are headaches complex regional pain syndrome neuropathic pain fibromyalgia back pain and abdominal pain The goals of the treatment program are to help patients Deal with pain more effectively Maintain function Stay in school or return to school Improve their quality of life A Team Approach The treatment team is led by a physiatrist who specializes in pediatric rehabilitation medicine Additionally most patients are evaluated by one of our dedicated chronic pain psychologists and by our physical therapist There is a dedicated case manager a nurse practitioner who works with the team on the plan of care and evaluates effectiveness compliance and any other case management needs The initial medical assessments for new patients are done on Thursday afternoons The visit will be approximately two to three hours as patients are evaluated by our integrative medicine team The evaluations with the psychology team and physical therapist will be scheduled for a later date Plan of Care The plan of care is written after seeing each new patient The family patient and referring
