  • Volunteer Chaplain Program
    Rady Children s clinics and the Bernardy Center 59 bed facility for medically fragile children with extended length of stays Volunteer chaplains work with our Spiritual Care Department staff for unit assignments and patient referrals A team approach allows for strong continuity and quality in pastoral care and support There is a wide variety of ways a volunteer chaplain may be involved in a case Some of these include pastoral crisis intervention spiritual assessment of a case offering a prayer or blessing administration of religious rites or sacraments baptism dedication of child communion ongoing pastoral support for long term cases pastoral care during the dying process and referral to clergy of the family s religion There are several ways that volunteer chaplains can serve at Rady Children s Some of the more common ways are to Designate a regular time commitment each week between three and six hours on a regular day to make visitations for spiritual assessment and pastoral support Be on call when the staff chaplain is not available Participate in our Bereavement Support programs Volunteer chaplains provide spiritual care on an ecumenical and interfaith basis Proselytizing evangelizing or recruitment of members for any congregation while functioning as a volunteer chaplain in the Hospital is considered unethical and is prohibited While these may be an expression of one s beliefs that are legitimate in other settings they are considered unethical in this environment due to the vulnerable position of children and families Other Ministry Opportunities In addition to ministry in the main Hospital there are opportunities for chaplains to work in the Bernardy Center which cares for our long term medically fragile children There is also an opportunity to work with the Hope Bereavement Support program at Rady Children s Application Process To apply click here for an

    and cerebral palsy Allison joined the Orthopedic and Scoliosis Center of Children s Specialists of San Diego now Rady Children s Specialists of San Diego in 2003 She graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor s degree in exercise and sport science and earned her master s degree in health sciences from the University of South Alabama in 2003 Lynn Manheim M S N CPNP Lynn is a board certified pediatric nurse practitioner and works closely with Eric Edmonds M D specializing in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine Her expertise is in fracture care Lynn joined the Orthopedic and Scoliosis Center of Children s Specialists of San Diego now Rady Children s Specialists of San Diego in 2002 She graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina with a bachelor s degree in nursing She received her master s in nursing and pediatric nurse practitioner degree from the University of San Diego Philip Stearns M S N CPNP Phil is a board certified pediatric nurse practitioner and works closely with Andrew Pennock M D specializing in pediatric fracture care He also has a special interest in pediatric hip and foot disorders Phil joined the Orthopedic and Scoliosis Center of Children s Specialists of San Diego now Rady Children s Specialists of San Diego in August of 2000 He graduated from Iona College with a bachelor s degree in biology and received his master s degree in nursing from Yale School of Nursing in May of 2000 Care Coordinator R N Valerie Young Calandra B A ADN Val joined our team in May 2010 as the Care Coordinator R N specializing in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine for Dr Eric Edmonds Previously she worked as an inpatient R N on the Hospital s Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Unit Val came to Rady Children s with more than 12 years of experience in the field of child and adolescent development She has a bachelor s degree in liberal studies from San Diego State University and an associate s degree in nursing Athletic Trainer Kristina Parvanta ATC OPA C Kristina joined 360 Sports Medicine in July 2012 She has worked for numerous collegiate club and high school sports teams and is able to get young athletes back to their sport in a timely manner through activity modification and specialized sports specific training She attended the University of Maine Orono 2003 2007 where she received a bachelor s degree in kinesiology and physical education athletic training She earned her master s degree in public administration at Villanova University in 2011 Kristina then completed a year long residency program at Emory Orthopedic and Spine Center in Atlanta enabling her to be an ideal physician extender in the sports medicine field Physical Therapists Kelly Randich Kelly has many years of experience working with children adolescents and adults with orthopedic neurological and sports related injuries She has been a clinician at Rady Children s Hospital San Diego since August 2011 Kelly has developed and presented workshops
