    the amazing people who buy RED products has contributed 160 million for the Global Fund to fund AIDS programs in Africa Since I ve gotten to know Bobby I ve come to understand that public service runs in his blood His mother Eunice as many people know founded the Special Olympics His father Sarge is not a household name but he should be Bobby s brothers and sister also have their own charitable endeavors such as Save the Children and Best Buddies The Shrivers aren t just good people they re a force Sarge passed this week at 95 and I find myself mourning him even though I never knew him I don t think I could do him justice by simply summarizing his life s work as I believe his programs have touched more people including me than projects by other person politician or not He created and ran the Peace Corps and then because that just wasn t enough he also ran the the War on Poverty which included Head Start VISTA Legal Services for the Poor and so on As a child of war refugees I ve always appreciated that Head Start helped get me on the right path to a good education when I was four For me education has been the primary mechanism that has lifted me and my family out of poverty I only learned last year that Sarge was its founder when I read the book Sarge by Scott Stossel I wholeheartedly recommend this book it is a fascinating look into his life and times and the most inspiring biography I ve ever read I guess I respect Sarge in the same way that I look up the Benjamin Franklin and that is why I m sad that Sarge is no longer with

    1960 presidential campaign to make the telephone call to Mrs Martin Luther King Many regard that call as decisive He was the person to whom JFK entrusted the then secret task to sound out LBJ whether or not he would accept the vice presidential nomination Again many regard that decision as decisive He was the person to whom JFK entrusted the staffing of his Cabinet He was the person to whom President Kennedy entrusted the Peace Corps and President Johnson the War Against Poverty He was the person who founded not only the Peace Corps but Headstart the Job Corps Legal Services for the Poor to name but a few programs Who else created in the 1960s so many seminal United States programs that in one form or another survive to this day Sarge s abilities that I choose to remember most are none of the above I choose to remember him as a devoted husband I choose to remember him as a committed and loving father He was a lot of fun in peace and war in work and in play I choose to remember him most as someone who had an uncanny way of finding the best in

    Sargent Shriver who died yesterday at the age of 95 was a man who personified the ideal of Catholic public service Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said Most people know him as the founder of the Peace Corps which has provided an avenue through which tens of thousands of Americans have served people in need in poor countries throughout the world over the past five decades That project undertaken at the behest of his brother in law President John Kennedy asked people to accept risks and make sacrifices in order to serve others It was emblematic of Sargent Shriver s entire life He served his community in Chicago in many ways as president of the Chicago Board of Education before coming to Washington and later as co founder with his wife Eunice of the Special Olympics which has benefited countless numbers of intellectually handicapped people in America and around the world Anderson continued The Knights of Columbus were proud to help him launch the very first Special Olympics event in Chicago in 1969 and we continue this work with his son Tim Shriver who guides the organization today Like President Kennedy Sargent Shriver was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus and we have always been proud to call him a brother Knight Anderson said He embodied the values of Catholic social teaching a love for the innate dignity of every human person and a determination to help improve the lot of those who suffered Sargent Shriver was a genuine Catholic gentleman filled with faith and a dedicated loving husband and father to his five children He lived a long and exceptionally productive life and set an example for Knights everywhere Sargent Shriver has gone to his eternal reward just two days before the 50th anniversary of his brother
