social justice As we celebrate the life of Maryland native Sargent Shriver let us also think of how or if future generations will remember him Shriver had an accomplished and interesting life a Democratic presidential and vice presidential candidate relative and adviser to President Kennedy ambassador to France and point man in President Johnson s war on poverty But as a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer Shriver s role as chief architect and founding director of the Peace Corps resonates most with me I never had the pleasure of meeting Sargent Shriver but I ve long been aware of his work Unfortunately that s not true for many Americans Consider the lives he s touched millions whose lives were changed for the better by dynamic programs Shriver developed in the Johnson administration including Head Start Job Corps and Legal Services Hundreds of thousands of Peace Corps Volunteers who learned about the world and millions more who learned from them National service volunteers whose work can be traced to the creation of VISTA And finally all the Special Olympics athletes and volunteers who have benefited from the commitment and love of Sarge and Eunice and the entire Shriver family For an individual

age of 95 was the living embodiment of a man who responded to that call with nearly every fiber of his being His life was a full and magnanimous one spent enthusiastically in the service of others It was Sarge who founded the Peace Corps at a time when others were skeptical of U S motivations abroad It was Sarge who led the war on poverty at a time when the poor were a forgotten other America It was Sarge who with his dear wife of 56 years Eunice spent decades fighting for the rights and abilities of people with intellectual disabilities He spent his life fighting intensely for those who needed it most Sarge was a national treasure but he was also a dear friend He helped me in my first Senate campaign in 1972 coming to Delaware for the last major event before the election and unquestionably giving me the final push I needed to win I owe Sarge a great debt of gratitude for all he did for me for my family and for our nation It is with fond memories and a heavy heart that Jill and I offer our condolences to his children Bobby Maria

Office of Equal Opportunity for Headstart in particular and for the War on Poverty in general The world is better because of Special Olympics and the world is better because of the love your parents shared and the incredible children they raised For 19 years I was proud and grateful to be one of the countless soldiers marching in your father s Headstart Army I began my Headstart service in the ghettos of D C and finished when marriage took me from Texas to Toronto One of the treasured evenings of my life was to return to D C to participate with your father in the 25th Anniversary of Headstart I well remember when your Daddy rose to speak jumping to my feet along with hundreds of teachers volunteers and graduates of Headstart to wildly applaud our hero Your father s selfless service and magnetic energy helped all of us to see that the real joy in life was in the giving not the getting What a lasting gift he gave us all As Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson s daughter I will always be grateful for Sarge s service to my father He could have so easily said I ve done my part after President Kennedy s assassination But your Daddy s devotion to country was bigger than service to one president even when that President was his own family His service was for the world family and his imprint lives on in thousands of lives that were transformed for good because of Sargent Shriver Tomorrow I will be in D C at the rotunda celebrating the 50th anniversary of your Uncle s inauguration I do not know if I will have the privilege of seeing any of your family and sincerely respect why that may not happen now
