  • Sargent Shriver Peace Institute - Sargent Shriver's Acceptance Speech for the Sword of Loyola Award
I got at the Bismarck Hotel to be near the Merchandise Mart this city and its citizens were and have been always marvelous to me I would have stayed here happily all my life Think of these facts Our first home was here in Chicago Yes I carried Eunice over the threshold of the apartment I had rented at 220 E Walton an apartment where my interior decorator and my secretary disappeared out the back door at the very moment the happy groom carried his bride into the front hallway where fresh flowers greeted her and into the bedroom where gardenias in profusion welcomed this Boston girl to the city of broad shoulders No city except Chicago would have appointed such a newcomer to the Board of Education and elected him President of it when he met the legal residency requirement of five years by a bare 4 months No city except Chicago could have better provided the superior medical services for my wife and our first two babies and the recreational opportunities in Lincoln Park for them and for Eunice and me Where in the world except Chicago could the Shriver Family visit the zoo with their children play golf shoot traps ride horses and drive in our pony cart with the children swim in the lake and also at a club pool all within 15 minutes of our front door at 2430 Lakeview Ave Where but at the March Mart could I have met and worked with the leaders of American industries home furnishings appliances carpets antiques the newest creations of America s top designers radio and TV and big corporations like Quaker Oats the CTA Field Enterprises all under one roof And no where was there a city government like Mayor Dick Daley s or a Park

cause for discouragement Not at all 25 years ago when Special Olympics was only an idea no one would have predicted then that today it would be the world s largest amateur sports program No one would have predicted that the International Olympic Committee in Switzerland would recognize Special Olympics as the only sports organization authorized by the I O C to use the word Olympics in our name and title Likewise we are the only program for handicapped persons recognized by the Olympic Academy in Greece the only world wide sports program without performance enhancing drugs the only one open to athletes of all abilities all ages all races all religions all cultures We impose no entrance fees no charges for coaching the athletes no exclusionary policies of any kind Everyone wins in Special Olympics because we reward the effort the progress and the spirit Even though some of our athletes may be able only to walk 50 yards or swim 10 metres they can compete in our Motor Activities Program Even though some of our athletes cannot comprehend the rules of complicated sports like basketball or tennis many many more can play competitive football basketball and volleyball on teams composed half of persons with mental disability and half with persons mentally just like all of us We call these teams and games Unified Sports These are our fastest growing events and often produce our happiest contestants Persons of normal intelligence enjoy these Unified Sports as much or more than the mentally disabled They become fast friends socially as well as in athletics Special Olympics enjoys sponsorship from on high Kings and Queens Presidents Prime Ministers Gold Medal Olympic champions all honor our Special Olympians today World leaders endorse our activities and our Games Some actually participate athletically in our Unified Sports And all of them say Special Olympics has opened their minds as well as their hearts Your statesman Lee Kuan Yew has called your system here in Singapore East Asian Confucian capitalism Li Xianglu the former Secretary for Economic Reform in the mainland Chinese Government of Prime Minister Zhao Ziyang says of Singapore that its core values are not Western liberalism or individualism and it may evolve into a system posing a challenge to the West China he says is likely to follow this alternative path The Singapore path At Special Olympics we like to think that our program fits in with these visionary words of Lee Kuan Yew and Li Xianglu We think that Special Olympics teaches and practices the virtues of a new era in sports and in civilization We hope that distinguished and far sighted business people like you will share our vision and help us to achieve it throughout all of East Asia Let me be specific First Special Olympics emphasizes Family Participation in all our activities 650 000 family members are registered and working for Special Olympics in the USA alone They are all giving their time and talents free of charge

  • Sargent Shriver Peace Institute - Sargent Shriver's Remarks at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Special Olympics International
Europe in the Middle East and southward through the African continent Special Olympics is not an event which occurs once every four years It is a movement in continual operation with competitions and Games day after day week after week summer and winter north and south all over the world Twenty five years ago no one would have dreamed that Special Olympics income and expenditures would now exceed 100 000 000 per annum freely contributed by millions and millions of small donors everywhere No one would have guessed that Special Olympics would become the largest world wide private philanthropy created in the 20th Century No one would have anticipated any of these unique and unprecedented achievements no one except possibly my wife I ve seen her at Buckingham Palace at the Elysee Palace in the White House in Washington in the Kremlin in Moscow with the Pope in Rome with the Queen of England the King of Nepal with Frank Sinatra Nat King Cole Bing Crosby Fred Astaire U 2 the Poynter Sisters Sinead O Connor and Madonna I ve watched her produce five healthy babies mother them to childhood achievements and inspire them to become TV stars public school superintendents of education lawyers financiers journalists originators of new charities all before any of them reached even 35 years of age But even she never imagined that Special Olympics would become the largest multi sports program in the world except for football or soccer as we call that fabulous sport Yet here we are all all of us celebrating that reality Is Special Olympics the only wholly supra national wholly egalitarian wholly charitable enterprise of this century Maybe it is Maybe these qualities explain its magical and universal acceptance Whatever the reasons we are all here this morning rejoicing We
