old and much older Every Special Olympics athlete has the chance to win They compete in divisions only with athletes of the same or approximately the same ability Special Olympics is not nationalistic We play no national anthem We wave no flags We permit no computation of medals won by specific countries It is individual effort and achievement that counts In the Special Olympics World Games in July of 1995 99 athletes from South Africa blacks and whites first competed together on one team It was in Special Olympics that athletes from the new State of Palestine first competed in a world event And in last August Special Olympics athletes from Jordan traveled across the river to Israel to participate in Special Olympics Games in that country Jews and Muslim Arabs together for the first time Special Olympics is also free of performance enhancing drugs Instead we are interested in enhancing the ability of every participant increasing their self esteem and self confidence and improving them physically psychologically and spiritually without the use of drugs Special Olympics does not believe that sports are an end in themselves We do not permit sports to dominate us or our athletes We use sports to help people develop in all areas of life Special Olympics thus involves the parents and siblings of our athletes Families help to coach and train their own Special Olympics athletes They provide transportation They sit on Boards of Directors They raise money More than 10 000 parents and siblings attended our last World Games They were housed fed and transported free of charge by Volunteer hosts and families in Connecticut They wore T shirts proudly announcing that they were the parents of a Special Olympics athlete They sit in specially reserved seats The wonders of Special Olympics are not restricted only to activities by parents and siblings or by leaders of Government or by the absence of drugs or the help given by volunteers or academic institutions or by the International Olympics Committee leaders Help often comes from unexpected places At the 1995 World Games Connecticut Labor Unions and their members gave 714 000 worth of their time and talent free Laborers from just one of the 50 American States did that Those were the biggest athletic event in the world in 1996 But your Games the 1997 World Winter Games will be even more historic As I said at the beginning of this talk these Games staged right here in Toronto and Collingwood will be not only the largest international multi sport event in the world next year They will be the largest World Winter Games in history including Lillehammer in 1994 which hosted 1 844 athletes from 67 Nations a record for the regular Winter Olympics These upcoming Special Olympics World Games your Games will host more than 2 000 athletes from 80 Nations The largest Winter Sports event in history will belong to Toronto Collingwood Clearly Games of this magnitude require assistance commitment support and

OUR GENERAL Bon Montague Are you telling me that he has applied for a job with Special Olympics To which I said Yes that s the name of the man who has written us He s stationed now at Fort Sheridan in Illinois General Taylor then said I can t believe that our Bon Montague wants to leave the Army for any other work And then he said Sargent isn t Special Olympics the sports program Eunice started for mentally retarded persons I said Yes that s right Eunice started it about six years ago To which General Taylor replied General Montague is one of the very best officers we have in the entire Army His record and performance are superb I can hardly believe Bob would leave us for such a new and small enterprise He paused Then added but if you can get him you will have one of the best executives and one of the best offices in our entire Army I was stunned I rushed to tell Eunice what General Taylor had said and she said Well let s get General Montague in here Let s see what he thinks of us once he sees how small we are Let s see if he really wants to work for mentally retarded people Well the General did come in person to see us He came He saw He conquered He was totally sincere He had no second thoughts about committing himself and his future to such a fledgling enterprise as Special Olympics He was not worried about his salary his title or the office personnel Typically he had already informed himself about Special Olympics its philosophy its mission its personnel its size He was ready to go As soon as Eunice said go he took off He kept running and he never stopped Every day and into the night he worked Saturdays were no day of rest for him He was in the office raring to go at 8 00am and never left before 7 or 8 in the evening Special Olympics with Eunice and Montague grew and grew and grew And it is still growing while still maintaining its original ethos its vision its compassion its modesty coupled with its power Montague was with Special Olympics for fourteen years And he was as proud of the Special Olympics With Dr Bob Cooke head of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins with Herbert Kramer Vice President of the Travelers Insurance Co who quit his job to work for Special Olympics and with a few others Eunice turned Special Olympics into a worldwide success with 1 200 000 athletes enrolled today It s truly a miracle and Bon Montague was surely one of its most spectacular miracle workers Why do I overwhelm you today with this story about Bob and Special Olympics I do so because I believe this story describes one of our great American achievements Created by my wide and mere handful of patriotic compassionate visionary citizens it

remediable all capable of contributing to not just taking from the financial wealth of societies Second even more important than those contributions to human societies persons with mental retardation will change the mental outlook of us all They will especially change the mental attitude of those who are obsessed with power be it financial power military power political power scientific power power of the mind power of the body power of the personality power to control power to dominate In place of these fixations on power mankind will FINALLY realize that peace and happiness and safety and civilization depend NOT on power but on love and unselfishness These historic Games the first ever Asia Pacific Special Olympics Games are a monumental point in the growth of the Special Olympics Movement These Games also exemplify the Special Olympics philosophy and vision a philosophy and vision which must become our foundation blocks if the 21st Century is to be rid of war rid of destruction and rid of starvation These Games will serve we hope as the catalyst for enormous growth of our Programs throughout this region I am confident based on my experience with the extraordinary dedication of all of you at Otis that you will play an important role in that growth I understand that in 10 years China will be the world s largest elevator market As the Otis moves people to new heights in China s buildings Special Olympics will be moving people with mental retardation to new heights in China s society Over these next 10 years Special Olympics will grow to a new prominence in China and all of Asia I know you will be there with us shoulder to shoulder as we bring joy to hundreds of thousands of new athletes and their families through the universal language of sports sports which are played for the joy and love of the game not solely for victory and power To you and to all of us as we move toward a millennium of acceptance and caring for all humanity Cheers Which brings me to one of the greatest examples of what corporations can do to change the lives of millions The Otis Elevator Company s Team Otis which I referred to earlier is an extraordinary lesson on what is possible More than 4 000 Otis employees worldwide volunteer their time to coach train fund raise clean up after events or anything else they can do to help Special Olympics They now have Team Otis programs in 40 countries This is because J P van Rooy President and CEO of the Otis Elevator Company made a strong commitment to Special Olympics He stated For companies for the shareholders of companies workplace giving becomes a requirement but it misses the most important aspect the personal individual commitment and involvement by employees It bypasses the company s people as an untapped resource Otis is one of the world s most global companies with operations in all but a handful

  • Sargent Shriver Peace Institute - Address at the Lighting of the Flame of Hope for the VI Special Olympics World Winter Games
I was here in Athens Since then I have visited some 15 or 20 times But this time I come with a message a different one than at any time before My message is not personal or nationalistic or economic or political Certainly it is not militaristic But it is I believe unusual perhaps even unique I speak today of Special Olympics Special because we are the only organization authorized by the International Olympic Committee to use the word Olympics in our title Special Olympics Special because we now operate in 145 nations with 1 200 000 athletes registered with 900 000 certified athletic coaches with more than one million family members and Volunteers working day by day and week free of charge Special because by the year 2 000 A D we will have 1 500 000 athletes and by the year 2 030 AD probably 4 000 000 athletes 6 000 000 family members and some 2 000 000 Volunteers Thus 35 years from now Special Olympics will be numerically the largest sports organization in history Its athletes will all be persons with Mental Retardation persons never before gathered together for any reason anywhere on earth These estimates or predictions may seem to be startling even immense But in our world right now 170 000 000 people with Mental Retardation are alive They are our clients Their numbers grow every year Experts predict there will be 200 000 000 human beings with mental retardation by the year 2 000 A D most of them potential athletes in Special Olympics What does all of this mean if anything for the next Century or the future of the World I suggest it means that for the first time in recorded history persons with mental retardation will be living respectfully and

him not an easy struggle to focus it on problems of persons with mental retardation and their families She has seen these people by the hundreds in all kinds of institutions including jails She travelled everywhere they were and saw them everywhere Some 200 000 human beings were incarcerated in these state and federal institutions costing the taxpayers some 35 000 per person per annum in 1959 U S dollars So when the Kennedy Foundation started its work she used its money to induce medical schools and famous professors of medicine to take a new interest in this human problem But sad to say the results at first were small Undaunted she also started summer camps for young persons afflicted with mental retardation One of these camps was at our own home in a place we rented in the country beyond Bethesda Believe it or not she brought 100 mentally retarded persons daily during the month of June to that farm And she got 100 high school boys and girls to work as volunteers every day with these persons with mental retardation She wanted to see for herself what persons with mental retardation could do not what they could not do She herself worked with these persons with mental retardation She tired everything in sports and games And finally she saw and became convinced they could do many many things quite well But no one had given them a chance She gave them that chance in summer camps everywhere she could find persons and families willing to help From these private amateur summer camp experience sprung forth her idea of Special Olympics She and two or three aides composed all the original rules and requirements And in 1968 she opened the doors to the first multi state athletic events for persons with mental retardation in human history She called these Games Special Olympics Today 1 200 000 athletes participate in Special Olympics They train and compete week by week in 145 countries In Communist China and in Cuba in South Africa and in Finland in Alaska and in Southern Chile And the number of participants grows and grows every year everywhere More than one million Volunteers work free of charge in Special Olympics almost 2 000 000 parents and siblings volunteer to participate in Special Olympics Because of all these volunteers the cost per annum and per athlete is 190 the lowest cost of any athletic program on earth These records and facts and revolutionary new projects have all been privately financed except in the few Communist countries Nearly all political leaders now endorse these Games world wide but none of them financed and participated in the creation of these Games In the United States alone approximately 110 000 000 per year is raised to finance Special Olympics This Special Olympics Movement world wide was created by one woman with a tenacity to make her dream come true Governments and their wars in the next Century can become less and

suffered at the ways his people were treated in the USA and almost everywhere else In one sentence Louis was interested in results for all of us not credits for himself In every way and at all times Louis was an exemplary human being Hence we are gathered here today to remember eulogize and pray for Louis soul But we do so at a unique time in American history a time which should not go un noticed as we reflect upon Louis life and achievements Think Ponder Pray Within the last weeks we will have honored Jackie Robinson the justly famous and courageous second baseman of the Brooklyn Dodgers who suffered such unjust and humiliating treatment by other baseball players in the Major Leagues But Jackie triumphed over them all by sacrificing himself in order to achieve a greater goal the elimination of the color line in our so called national pastime Jackie triumphed He won permanent glory in race relations within our nation Then just ten days ago we witnessed one of the greatest achievements in sports history Tiger Woods age 21 an African Asian citizen of the USA won the Masters Golf Tournament an event conducted at one of the most racially segregated clubs in our country Augusta Georgia and golf will never the same again So in just three weeks Louis Martin s life Jackie Robinson s courage and self control and Tiger Woods modesty and brilliance have created a new and much better group of Three Musketeers a trio not armed with swords and skillful in killing their opponents Louis Martin Jackie Robinson and Tiger Woods are a better trio These three American Musketeers personify faultlessly the very words of our Declaration of Independence that all men are created equal that they are endowed by their
