    in the mid 1960s Shriver developed a multi faceted War on Poverty designed to transform the economic and social roots of the conflict over civil rights in America Like the Peace Corps the programs of the War on Poverty including Head Start Job Corps VISTA Community Action Program Legal Services to the Poor and Foster Grandparents continue to serve Americans today In the 1970s and 1980s Shriver addressed the inter religious tensions at the heart of the conflict in the Middle East by convening for over five years the first official Trialog of the Abrahamic faiths since the Moors ruled medieval Spain He also addressed domestic and global tensions over America s escalating nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union by securing affirmation of a No First Strike policy by senior U S foreign policy officials and the U S Conference of Catholic Bishops In the 1980s and 1990s as Chairman of the Board of Special Olympics International Sargent Shriver joined with his wife and son Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Timothy Perry Shriver to transform the roots of violence and discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities by promoting Special Olympics Games throughout the world About Sargent Shriver Robert Sargent Shriver Jr was born November 9 1915 in Westminster Maryland Shriver attended Yale University in 1934 During college Shriver was the senior editor of the Yale Daily News Shriver enrolled in Yale Law School in 1938 receiving his L L B in 1941 Shriver went on to serve five years in active duty in the U S Navy during World War II In 1953 Shriver married Eunice Kennedy sister of John F Kennedy Shriver s commitment to public service made him one of the most effective leaders of John F Kennedy s New Frontier and Lyndon Johnson s Great Society in the 1960s He inspired directed or founded numerous social programs and organizations including Head Start VISTA Job Corps Community Action Upward Bound Foster Grandparents Special Olympics the National Center on Poverty Law Legal Services and the Peace Corps serving as the program s first director under President Kennedy Shriver also ran the War on Poverty during Johnson s tenure as president Shriver also served as U S ambassador to France from 1968 to 1970 In 1972 Shriver was nominated by the Democratic Party as a candidate for Vice President with presidential candidate Senator George McGovern in the campaign against President Richard Nixon and Vice President Spiro Agnew In 1978 Shriver began the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Trialogue between leaders of Christian Jewish and Muslim religions the first such forum for discussion since medieval Spain Shriver went on to become President of Special Olympics in 1984 He was appointed Chairman of the Board of Special Olympics in 1990 Under Shriver s leadership the Special Olympics greatly expanded its international sports programs for young people around the world On August 8 1994 Sargent Shriver received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton the United States highest civilian honor as recognition

    the first of nine A Very Special Christmas records two of which were recorded live at The White House The success of these two projects led him to form Special Olympic Productions an on going entity for fundraising through entertainment related projects These projects have raised more than 100 million to support Special Olympics organizations around the world In 1999 one of the Very Special Christmas artists Bono asked Shriver to help him with the Jubilee 2000 campaign The goal behind Jubilee was to cancel the debt of the world s poorest nations by building political support with a petition drive Six million signatures had been collected in Europe but only six thousand had been collected in the United States Shriver advised that rather than collect signatures they should lobby Congress to get the check necessary to finance debt cancellation Bono and Shriver went to work recruiting Republicans and in 2000 Congressman John Kasich led the floor fight to increase the 60 million allocated for African debt relief to 435 million The debt relief successes in Washington enabled Bono and Shriver to found DATA DATA works with African leaders to determine which anti AIDS and poverty interventions are working and which are not as well as to do policy research on G8 government s budgets In 2002 President George W Bush proposed 15 billion in the President s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief PEPFAR In 2004 Bono and Shriver again teamed up this time to form the ONE Campaign to build grassroots support for DATA s lobbying goals In 2008 DATA combined with ONE This unified team continues to build on its grass roots movement of 2 4 million Americans calling for the U S and all G8 governments to help Africans fight AIDS and end extreme poverty In 2006

    their community Maria provided opportunities for direct service in California s neediest communities by building 31 playgrounds and community gardens throughout the state True to her mission of empowering people to become Architects of Change Shriver also spent her time as First Lady recognizing honoring and celebrating the change makers in California and beyond As Honorary Co Chair of The California Museum in Sacramento Shriver adopted and then revitalized the struggling state museum recognizing an opportunity to turn it into a must see destination for inspiring people by California s rich history To further that goal Shriver helped the museum attract one of a kind exhibits create cutting edge programs and raise millions of dollars in funding She created the California Hall of Fame in 2006 to honor legendary Californians who embody the state s innovative spirit and have made their mark on history It is the highest honor the California Governor bestows on those who have transformed California and the world and during her tenure 65 people were inducted into the institution that has its permanent home at The California Museum Under Shriver s direction and vision The California Governor and First Lady s Conference on Women grew into the world s premier forum for women Each year The Women s Conference encouraged tens of thousands of women to become Architects of Change and invited hundreds of the world s greatest voices hearts and minds to teach them how The conference developed an online destination at WomensConference org that brought together millions of people around the idea of becoming an Architect of Change The success of The Women s Conference event under Shriver s leadership enabled the conference organization to fund programs and form partnerships that empowered women year round in all areas of their lives With Shriver at the helm the conference became a force for change directly funding more than 4 million in charitable programs that served women on the frontlines of humanity During the nation s toughest economic downturn since the Great Depression the WE Connect program linked millions of low income working families many of whom had never before needed help with financial resources such as the Earned Income Tax Credit foreclosure assistance job placement resume assistance and other important money saving programs The program also provided more than 2 million meals to families in need Shriver s The Modern House Call for Women a groundbreaking three day health and financial services clinic provided 5 000 free medical dental and financial services to nearly 2 500 people In addition the conference provided academic scholarships to promising young women through its WE Educate program gave grants to Minerva Award winners through WE Honor funded domestic violence shelters through WE Act and inspired people by the remarkable history of their state through WE Inspire And through the conference s WE Invest program and its partnership with Kiva org hundreds of women entrepreneurs in the U S received microloans totaling more than 1 million In 2004 Shriver created

    lobbied extensively on behalf of kids in Congress and in state capitals In addition Moore and Shriver teamed up to launch an acclaimed kids Valentine s Day project in partnership with the American Federation of Teachers to teach children about the challenges of childhood poverty Protecting Kids When Disaster Strikes Mark Shriver created Save the Children s domestic emergency response programs in 2005 to ensure that children are protected when disaster strikes and are provided safe haven and reunion with their families during a disaster s aftermath He was the chief spokesperson for the organization s 2009 and 2010 national report card which revealed a severe lack of preparedness for protecting kids during disasters He led a national coalition that successfully convinced Congress to create the National Commission on Children and Disasters to ensure better protection of children before during and after major domestic catastrophes Shriver was appointed to the Commission by Senate Majority Harry Reid D NV and was elected as its first chairperson by his fellow commissioners A Lifetime Advocating for Kids and Youth Mark Shriver was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 1994 to 2002 He was the first Chair of the Joint Committee on Children Youth and Families and was appointed Chair of the Children and Youth Subcommittee of Maryland s House Ways and Means Committee He was repeatedly recognized as Outstanding Legislator of the Year by prominent advocacy and civic organizations In 1988 Mark founded the innovative Choice Program which serves delinquent and at risk youth through intensive community based counseling Shriver subsequently created The Choice Jobs Program Inc a private non profit that trains places and supports former Choice clients in jobs as well as The Choice Middle Schools Program a model for keeping at risk middle school children in school

    in Charge of the Charities Bureau in the New York State Department of Law from 1999 to 2004 under former Attorney General Eliot Spitzer Bill continues to speak and write on issues concerning philanthropy in the United States He has represented both donors and donees including with respect to major endowments Bill s career in public service and in the private sector through his Fried Frank law practice continues to the present day Beginning in 1966 he served as counsel to Mayor John V Lindsay s New York City Human Resources Study Group and thereafter worked on a number of Lindsay Administration initiatives including the Community School District System and Neighborhood Government He represented the New York City Employees Retirement System in the refinancing of New York City its divestment from South African investments and other matters from the mid 1970s until the early 1980s From 1967 until his retirement he represented The City University of New York and its Construction Fund in many matters including its tax exempt bond issues He is representing pro bono the New York State Law Revision Commission in the reenactment of the New York Not for Profit Corporation Law Bill recently successfully represented the nonprofit Drug Policy Alliance when New York City denied its real property tax exemption on the sole ground that DPA was an advocacy organization Bill has testified many times before various Senate and House Committees Bill has also written many articles for legal publications including Repairing the Electoral College The Electoral College and the Popular Vote and Senate Election of the Vice President and House Election of the President He teaches tax exempt organizations at New York University s Heyman Center on Philanthropy He has taught courses at George Washington Cardozo and Brooklyn Law Schools He has been a director
