  • U.S. Senate Hears The Colorado River! | Save the Colorado
statement is on YouTube here take a look and enjoy his speech Some bad news in Western Colorado this week The natural gas spill that occurred in the Colorado River tributary of Parachute Creek continues to leak cancer causing benzene in and around the creek Further the level of benzene increased this week although the spill occurred 6 months ago to above EPA safe drinking water standards This dangerous spill continues to baffle regulators and the clean up crews Click here to read the story in the Denver Post Tons of contaminated soil has already been removed from the site and clean up crews continue to work under the supervision of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment As tens of thousands of oil and gas wells are drilled and fracked throughout the Southwest U S that require thousands of miles of pipes refining plants and compressor stations it only seems inevitable that our water supplies will be impacted by all of this dangerous industrial activity The State of Colorado needs to get a handle on this spill as soon as possible Still time to win a free raft trip this summer You can enter our photo contest and win a free raft trip through the Gates of Lodore on the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument You can enter to win by clicking here Our amazing friends at O A R S rafting have offered this great 4 days 3 nights trip for 2 people to help protect the Colorado River and support our organization What do you have to do to win Just send us your coolest funnest photos of recreating on water on the Colorado River or on any river in the Southwest U S Do you have great rafting kayaking swimming playing in water photos

  • Colorado River Update! Congress Needs To Act To Address “MEGADROUGHT” | Save the Colorado
Senator Mark Udall for leading the fight Is Lake Powell causing the water supply crisis in the Southwest U S A new scientific paper authored by hydrologist Dr Thomas Myers and published in the Journal of the American Water Resources Association indicates that the problems with Lake Powell are only increasing as water supply challenges escalate across the Southwest U S We ve all known for a long time that over a half million acre feet of water which is over 1 30th of the entire flow of the Colorado River evaporates out of Lake Powell each year But what this new report indicates is that another 380 000 acre feet of water leaks through the banks of the reservoir into the surrounding desert landscape and is completely lost to the system This scientific article received wide media attention when it was released 2 weeks ago including this story here in the Summit County Voice Adding evaporation and leakage together Lake Powell loses almost 1 million acre feet of water per year Does this reservoir even make any sense anymore So we ask the question again is Lake Powell causing the water supply crisis in the Southwest U S Do you have cool photos of having fun in the Colorado River Do you want to win a free raft trip through Dinosaur National Monument Then send us your photos Thanks to our friends at O A R S Rafting we are giving away a 4 day raft trip for 2 people on the Green River You can submit photos for the contest by clicking here that s all you have to do to potentially win On July 25th which is Colorado River Day we will open the contest voting so the public can pick the winner So send us your

  • Congress Needs To Act To Address Potential “MEGADROUGHT” in Colorado River Basin | Save the Colorado
has already outstripped supply with the imbalance increasing dramatically over the next few decades Further yet on July 10 th yesterday the Bureau of Reclamation released their most recent 24 month study of Colorado River operations which predicted a slightly greater than 50 chance that the amount of water flowing out of Lake Powell in 2014 would be at its lowest point since the reservoir was constructed The study also indicated that the inflow into Lake Powell in June of 2013 was just 35 of average Congress needs to take this issue seriously now said Gary Wockner of the Save The Colorado River Campaign We need to make sure the Colorado River Basin Study is used to combat this imbalance and potential megadrought we can hope and pray for rain but we need to plan for a worst case scenario that supplies water and protects the river in the 21 st Century Throughout the CRBS process environmental groups have championed water conservation as a key strategy to help address the imbalance of supply and demand in the basin Environmental groups believe that increased municipal and agricultural water conservation could supply up to 2 million new acre feet of water In addition water reuse and recycling in Southwest U S cities could create another new million acre feet for a total of 3 million acre feet created through conservation reuse and recycling If you re in an oil crisis you don t build more gas guzzling hummers said Wockner The Southwest U S is entering a potential severe water crisis and we can t build dams and pipelines to fix it we need to develop a new economy in water conservation and river protection that meets this challenge The subcommittee schedule is here http www energy senate gov public index cfm
